How sad that another passenger has fallen overboard. Wondering if people are accidently going over or willingly going over.

Sometimes the news media makes it sound as if someone was just walking along and - Oops! they slipped over the side, right over those high railings without even a bounce. People (non-cruisers) sometimes ask me if I'm afraid I'll "fall" overboard. Not sober I won't! Lisa Last edited by lisiamc; June 16th, 2009 at 03:44 PM. |

Does anyone know if Carnival has lower railings than other ships?

I am thinking that the railings are the same height. And, what I meant about accidentally going over is what you said - people sometimes do stupid things when they have been drinking. Very sad situation

It's so horrible. I've not heard about this one on the media yet, but, I've often looked down to the sea from my balcony, and I don't think I could be drunk enough to jump over the railing. It always looks so far down.... I feel awful for the victim and the family.

I'm 5'5" and the railings are pretty much chest high on me. I would think there would have to be a certain height.

I can not imagine what her family must be going through. It does not matter if it was planned (example: due to depression) or just a lapse in good judgement (example: climbing from one balcony to another) what matters is that right now there is a family out there who is going through something that I hope we never have to go through.

Not that this is particularly relevant, but it struck me as very odd that the crew reported hearing a "loud splash"....with the sounds the ship makes when it is cruising, just the waves against the sides alone, I can't imagine being able to hear anything if a person goes over, let alone a "loud" splash?

Gimme a break already with this crap. Anybody who goes overboard on a cruise ship is either suicidal or an idiot. Look at the guy who fell off near Tampa. Standing on the railing to get a beter view. C'mon. Before you know it, the NTSB or some other government agency, with their infinte wisdom and compassion will mandate the erection of huge ugly barriers that you can't get over. By the way, lets get rid of veranda rooms while were at it. That will ruin the cruise experience, but boy, will we ever be safe!

I have cruised on Carnival 3 times. They are the "Fun Ship" line which caters to drinkers, smokers and the party crowd. Thus your passengers will tend to more likely be drunks and risk takers. Alcohol and implusive behavior leads to poor decision making. I assume most overboard incidences are due to poor judgement induced by excess alcohol comsumption. Criminals also fit this profile thus you are more likely to be murdered while on board. No such problem with Holland America. Most of the elders on board can't jump over the rail nor push anyone over. HAL ships have a morgue. Usefull for passengers who die of old age.

Can we hope that Darwin has just done his job again. With regard to the idiot in Tampa who survived, I would hope that the hospital castrated him before they released him to prevent him from having kids.

Dying of old age on a cruise is my preferred method of leaving
the mortal world. Becoming shark bait through accident, misadventure or mental illness is NOT. My condolences to the families involved.
