We have just returned from our Costa Classica Treasures of the Far East cruise and we had a fantastic time.
We had sailed with Costa before and after reading reviews, our expectaions were not high and we were determined to have a good cruise and make the most out of our holiday, we were paying for it after all. With a good attitude we believe that you can enjoy this cruise. Yes, the ship is tired, and the bathroom in cabin could do with a complete refurbishement, food is just average, but the efficient friendly staff and interesting call of ports make up for it. Embarkation We boarded the ship in Singapore, and as most of the guests had already boarded in Hong Kong a week earlier, the process was very quick and smooth. Make sure you have your cruise ticket, and your email registration printed to hand in. Our photographs were taken for security and we were on board within 15 minutes. We boarded at 3.30pm and our luggage was in our room by 5 pm. We immediately went to the cabin and were pleasantly surprised by the large size. Our cabin was # 5113 and was an inside, did miss a window, but it was not a major problem. Cabin had few hangers, but we asked for more and they were brought to us. We did not use the mini bar. There were three sockets which seemed to be fitted for US and UK plugs. The voltage was 220 volt/60 Hz current and the bathroom was 220/110 volts. There was a small kettle and plenty of tea bags, coffee sachets and creamers. Normally our suitcases fit under the bed, but in this cabin they did not, but still not a problem. There was only one chair in the cabin and a small table, this was only not a problem as we noticed most of the cabins had two chairs. I am sure they would have brought us another chair if we had of asked. Cabin walls are not that thick and we often heard the TV noise and toilet flushing from other cabins, again this did not bother us. Key Cards and Dinner Table Nubmer Our key cards, costa cards and table number were all in the room when we arrived. We immediately noticed that we were confirmed on first dinner, which was a disappointment as our TA told us we were confirmed on second. This happened on our previous Costa cruise also, and we spent over one and a half hours queuing to change it, so we decided to try it out. We stuck to our first sitting dinner, but we will never do it again. Dinner was at 6.15 every night, for us this was a rush, especially when coming back from excursions and we were never that hungry at this time, because we normally had a late lunch every day. We also missed being able to be on deck when the ship was leaving port some days, which was annoying. Whether you choose first or second is a personal preference and for us we would not agree to first again. First is 6.15pm and second is 8.45pm. Breakfast Some days we went to the self service and some days to the restaurant. Self service was a bit noisy and like a zoo at times, but this is normal. In the restaurant you could order expresso and capiccuno coffee at no extra charge, (breakfast only). For breakfast in the restaurant you had to serve yourself fruit, juice, bread, etc and an order was only taken at the table for a cooked breakfast. The cooked breakfast menu was very basic and sometimes we had to ask for a menu. We were very often seated beside non English speaking guests for breakfast and lunch in the dining room. Sometimes we went to the restaurant half an hour before closing for breakfast and lunch and did receive a bit of an attitude from the staff. This was the only time we noticed any bad attitude from the staff. Lunch The same food is basicially served in the restaurant as in the self service. We enjoyed the restaurant, as it was more relaxing and quieter. Some days we did meet interesting people and had good conversations. Dinner Some nights the self service restaurant was closed, but this did not bother us as we liked to go to the restaurant for dinner. There were three formal nights on our 14 night cruise. People did make an effort, but it was not OTT, like some other cruises we have been on. Food The food was average, plenty of it and lots of choices. We personally found it bland, even the Asian dishes. We ate most things and thought the food was satisfactory. We found the coffee on the ship tasted awful, so I stopped drinking it. Of course they had a coffee shop if you wanted to purchase a better quality cup of coffee. Pizza There is a Pizzeria on deck 9, which is free of charge. The choices are very good and the pizza is FOC and very tasty. Apparently you can only use your X1 card here between 6 and 7pm. X1 The draft beer is Carlsberg and served in a small beer glass at lunch and dinner. The red wine was changed half way through our cruise to a nicer one, which was good for us. Some days they poured a glass of wine and some days they left the bottle, so some days we had to keep asking for more wine. We asked for a bottle of sparkling water every day with our lunch and dinner. In the self service you were only served plastic for your beer, wine and water. This put us off going to the self service. Some days we would have lunch in the restaurant and then go to the al fresco bar on deck 10 and ask for a couple of beers or wine and we were not refused. I think they stopped serving us at 3pm. The X1 package is worth it even though we only used it at dinner on most port days. Entertainment For first dinner sitting the show was usually at 8.45 and for second it was at 10.30 or 10.45. The shows were short and not that great, but we still went to all of the shows and enjoyed having something to do at night after dinner. Photographs This is one ship I have been on that there were few photographs being taken and we loved this. Because we had cruised with Costa before we were invited to meet the Captain and have our photograph taken with him, which we were then given free of charge. You must have signed up for the Costa Club for this though. As club members we were also given chocolates on gala nights and fruit in our room, nothing special, but nice all the same. Laundry Laundy on ship was over priced as normal with ships and hotels. However, one day near the end of the cruise they were offering a special offer of 25 pieces of laundry for Euro 19.99. We did not use this service, but at least it was offered. TV Not great channels, but at least we got national news and we were able to view the ships web cams. Internet We did not use the internet due to the high costs on ship, however we did see quite a few people using it. Library Very poor selection and the library was only open at certain times, plus you had to queue up when you wanted to borrow or return a book. Some times this was a long process as the details all had to be written down manually. Try to boroow more than one book at a time to save you waiting. Staff We found the staff on board to be efficient and pleasant. We had no problems with the staff and thought they were nice to deal with. Tips We were billed Euro 77.04 per person in total for the two week cruise. There was no break down on the bill, just a total. I think the break down may have listed in the brochure or website. We asked for envelopes at the information desk and rewarded four of the staff extra tips for looking after us. Table mates We had a table of ten, all from the UK, and they were all very nice interesting people and we were very lucky. We did meet quite a few people from Australia, two couples only from USA and quite a few Europeans and Asians. Credit Card Registration and Tours Once you embark, you have a day or so to go a booth and swipe your credit card. You can also pay by cash, but you need to leave a deposit. It is easier paying by credit card as your bill is delivered to your room on the last night and if it is okay you have to do nothing as it will be automatically charged to your CC. If you want to book excursions, try to do this on the internet before you cruise or immediately once on board. As soon as we boarded, we tried to book a tour for Sanya and it was fully booked and had to opt for one that we did not want, our fault. You can book tours from the excursion desk or various booths around the ship. Currency Try to change your currency before boarding the ship as the ship charges a fee for each transaction. Note that all charges on board are in Euro. Casino We normally like going to casinos but this one on board lacked autmosphere so we did not go to it. We did not hear of any winners either. Bingo was offered on board, but we did not play. Gym My husband used the gym and said it was good for a decent work out. Sea Days We found there was not much to do on sea days, compared to other ships. We were never bored though and enjoyed the sea days. Weather The sea was quite rough on occassions and the ship had plenty of sick bags attached to each stair case. If you suffer from sea sickness or motion sickness, it is a good idea to wear bands or bring tablets. Some sea days it was too windy to walk on the top deck or even sunbathe. Just be prepared for rough seas. Water Do not drink the water in your cabin, we used the ice bucket water for brushing our teeth and filled our water bottles from the self service restaurant for drinking water. You can bring on bottled water from any of the ports. We did not try to bring alcohol on board, no need for it with the X1 package. Excursions Ho Chi Minh City A charge of Euro 4.50 is charged to your account for a visa for Vietnam whether you go ashore or not. This visa can also be used for the next port in Da Nang. We opted to get a shuttle bus provided by the ship at Euro 7.00 per person return journey to the Hotel Rex. We found that we did not have enough time in HCM. Plan your day here wisely as some of the museums closed for lunch. You do need Vietnamese Dong here for the museums. We went to the Independence Palace and it cost 15.000d pp. Here they have very good English speaking guides and this is a free service. Our guide was fantastic and we spent a long time here. We also visited the post office, bought some stamps and postcards. We visited the Notre-Dame Cathedral. We went to visit the Pagoda but it was closed for lunch and then we went to visit the War Remnants Museum. We visited a local bar for some beers, which were very cheap and then had beers at the roof top bar at the Rex Hotel, which cost 144 D, around $10 US dollars for two small beers, which was expensive for Vietnam, but not for a hotel of course. The views were good from the roof top bar, but it lacked atmosphere during the day. We did not have time for the markets. In HCM, we walked everywhere and crossing the roads were dangerous, but we managed it and even had locals helping us to cross. HCM was very hot and humid, but we had a great time and would love to go back to see the tunnels. Da Nang Here we boarded the shuttle bus provided by the ship at a cost of Euro 6.00 per person return trip. We did not enjoy Da Nang that much as there was not much too see and we found the locals hassled us quite a lot. We took a taxi cab just to get some relief from the locals at a charge of $50 USD including tip. There were only two of us but the taxis usually held four comfortably. We stopped at a marble factory and shop and spent 15 mintues there. We were followed around the shop and of course they wanted us to purchase but we were not interested. We did see some craftsmen at work and the pieces were beautiful. We then stopped at the bottome of Marble Mountain and our taxi driver told us that it had been raining quite a lot and it would be difficult to climb the 200 steps to the top. Don't know how true this one, but at the time it was cool and raining so we stayed in the taxi. He then drove us to Hoi An Ancient Town. He left us on our own here for two hours and we had a great time. Hoi An is well worth a visit and we took many photographs here. We also made some purchases here of silk scarves and a silk robe and a painting. We also tried a local bar but the local beer did not taste that good. We went to the local market and it was interesting. On our way back to Da Nang our driver stopped at China Beach for us to take photographs and he pointed out new hotels and a new casino on route. Our driver then brought us back to Da Nang and here we each got a pedal ride. This cost $5 US dollars including tip per person for one hour. During the hour we were brought to a nice department store, a local market and a silk shop. Being driven around in the pedal cab was scary at times because the roads were crazy, but probalby not as scary as doing this in HCM. We paid for everything in Da Nang in US Dollars as they seemed to be widely accepted. Weather was much cooler here and although it rained on and off, we had a great day out in Da Nang and Hoi An. Sanya Before going to Sanya, we all had to go through a temperature check on board the day before. We also had to collect our passports. In Sanya we had to go through immigration and customs. This process took time and we had to wait over one hour on our tour bus waiting for late passengers who for some reason were held up in immigration. You do need a visa for Sanya and if you book a ships excurision and if you are from the UK, (not sure about other nationalities), the visa is included in the price of the excursion. The ship provides a shuttle bus here at a cost of Euro 22.00 pp. Euro 7.00 is for the bus and Euro 15.00 is for the visa. The ship did not give us this information when we enquired about what we could do on our own in Sanya. They keep this quiet. So, we paid Euro 69.00 each for an excursion and we waited the first hour on the bus. Then we were brought to a peal shop and we were here for an hour. Most of the passengers complained but nothing was done about it. We then were on our way to the Buddhism Centre in Nanshan. The drive through the country side was beautiful and the park itself was interesting and beautiful. Although we had a shuttle to bring us through the park, we thought this part of the tour was very rushed. The ship needs to cut out the peal stop on the way. Sanya was very hot and we spoke to other passengers who all seemed to enjoy their excursions. We had a great time at the park and took lovely photographs. Here you need Chinese Yuan to purchase goods. We were quite late getting back to the ship and this resulted in the ship being delayed in leaving Sanya. Hong Kong We were late arriving in HK, supposed to be there at 1pm, but we arrived at about 5.30 or so. This was due to leaving Sanya late and due to a small breakdown of electrical equipment on board. It was no big deal for us, but some excursions were canceled for that day. In Hong Kong the ship provided shuttle buses regularly from the port to the city where the Star Ferries depart. Most people got of the ship and went on the Star Ferry to Kowloon. The ferry was 2.50 HK dollars one way and was fast. In kowloon quite a few passengers went to the markets. We caught the underground and went to Temple Street night market and bought some gifts. The next day, quite a large amount of passengers disembarked and of course quite a lot also embarked, so for us, we said goodbye to people that we had met that first week. We spent our day at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island where we caught a cable car to see the Big Buddha. We queued up for one hour to get a ticket and then another hour to board the cable car. Boarding the cable car on the way back was much quicker. We paid $107.00 each HK dollars as far as I can remember and we paid about $55.00 HKD each for an all day tourist train pass. If I was doing this trip again, I would catch the train to Ngong Ping and then catch the bus at the bottom of the cable car entrance and just get the cable car back. We wasted too mcuh time queuing up for the cable car. The views from the cable car were amazing, but it was a long journey. We found HK to be very cold and we were not prepared for this as we did not bring warm clothing, our fault. We enjoyed our trip to see the big Buddha and monastry and it was well worth the trouble and time. We have been to HK many times, but this was something that we had never done before. We returned to HK and took a couple of tram rides for fun. This cost $2.00 pp per journey. This is a very cheap method of transport and we sat at the front and took many pictures. We then took a train to Kowloon but we would not do this again as the train station in Kowloon was quite far away from the Star Ferry dock and we had to take another bus to get to the ferry which took a lot of time. If you have time, go to Kowloon to watch the laser show at 8.30 (check times) at night, very good. We took the Star Ferry back to HK and it was $2.00 HK dollars this time pp. There is a lot to do and see in HK, so plan your days wisely here. One of our table mates got two suits, three shirts and ties made by a custom tailer in Kowloon and he was very pleased with the quality and service. I have the details if anyone is interested. We left HK at 10pm and dinner that night was open seating in the restaurant. Manila Here we opted for the ships shuttle bus at a cost of Euro 6.00 pp. The first shuttle leaves the ship at 9.30 am and drops you at Robinson Plaza, which opens at 10am. On arrival, we were hassled by lots of taxi drivers for tours. They just will not leave you alone. The best thing to do is get the second shuttle and hopefully by then the shopping centre will be open and get off the bus and go into the shopping centre. I told my husband we did not need a taxi but he was easily persuaded by the taxi drivers. We were brought to a desk outside the shopping centre and told it was a fixed price of $50 US dollars per taxi for a three hour tour. This was a disaster. We paid a deposit and our taxi driver was useless, he spoke little English and could not tell us anything. My husband had to point out places on the map that he should bring us. He brought us to a monument for fifteen minutes, we had to work out who it was off. Then he brought us to Fort Santiago and dropped us there for over one hour. He asked us to pay for the car parking fees as well. Then he brought us to a craft shop and followed us around, he got annoyed when we only bought post cards, as he was probably waiting for a commission. He then brought us to another shopping centre which was rubbish and made us pay again for the car parking. My husband wanted him to bring us to a couple of places, but he said they were closed. He brought us back to town thirty minutes early and yelled something at us, which we did not understand. We complained to the tourist taxi desk who had booked us, told them he did not speak English and that he did not know where to go and brought us back way too early. They just laughed in our faces and told us we still had to pay the fifty USD. We paid up and went into the shopping centre where we had lunch and some beers to calm down. We were asked quite a lot in Manila for money by young kids and beggars and it was quite sad. The shopping centre was very good, but you were constantly followed around and hassled, so we only boughta couple of things. Manila was also very hot and humid. Manila was my least favourite port because of our taxi driver. If I was visiting here again, I would either take a ships tour or get my own cheap taxis to places that we wanted to see. It did not put us off though and we still made the most of our day and really enjoyed seeing Manila. Dock side there were local markets and here we puchased post cards that had stamps on them and they even had a post box there. We paid 100 peso per post card with stamp included. Not sure if they will turn up, have to wait and see. My husband bought a TShirt here for $10 USD which had the name and picture of the ship on it and all the ports that we were vistiting with a map and flags. Very nice tshirt as a souvenior. kota Kinabalu Here we walked into town from the ship. You can pay $5 US if you want for a five minute taxi ride if you want. It was very hot here also. We walked around town, got a couple of local buses at RM 0.50 each way. We visited the local market and of course a local bar for some cooling beers. We did a lot of walking around and we had every intention of hiring a local taxi at a cost of RM 35.00 per hour, but we changed our minds. We also had intended going across to one of the islands for a couple of hours, but we changed our mind about this too as it was all too confusing. Our time did pass quite quickly here. We probably should have seen more, but at least we got a feel for the city and enjoyed it. People here were very nice. Bandar Seri Begawan Here Costa offered a shuttle to town as town was one hour away from the port. It cost Euro 31 pp return. We thought this was overpriced just for a bus. So, we left the ship, turned left out of the port and walked about ten minutes to a small shopping center on the left at the roundabout. Here we boarded a purple bus, Eastern Line at a cost of $2 Singapore Dollars pp into town. This was an express bus and on the way back we boarded the normal Eastern bus and it was $1 Singapore dollar per person. The bus took just over one hour each way. Once here, we walked down to the ferry dock, and boarded a tourist taxi at a cost of $15 Singapore dollars per person return. We were given life jackets and were taken around the water village. We then were allowed to go into one of the refurbished houses and were given drinks and local snacks. The house was beatiful and we spent a lot of time here talking and taking pictures. This was a good trip and worth it. We then walked over to the mosque, which was beautiful and a great photo opportunity. It was then time to go back to the bus depot for the local bus back to the ship. You do get more time if you book the ships shuttle, but for us we saw what we needed to see and we had a great time. People here were very friendly and cars stopped on the roads for us when we were crossing. Again it was very hot here. Singapore In Singapore we were leaving the ship. Our cases had to be outside the door by 2am and we had to leave our cabins by 9am. We left our cabin at 8.30am and waited till 9.30 for our luggage to arrive outside. Most people did have their luggage by 9am. You have to go through immigration and customs here so you need to pick up your original passport. As we have visited Singapore many times, I will not talk about what there is to do here. Singapore is a beautiful place, very clean and safe with an excellent transport system. You do not need to book a ship's excursion here. Sorry, this report is very long and I probably have forgotten quite a bit. Hopefully it will be of some interest to people thinking of taking this cruise. Just read the paragraphs of interest to you. ![]() We thoroughtly enjoyed this cruise and would certainly recommend it to our friends and family. The best thing to do is remembver you are not crusing for the cabin or food, you are cruising because you deserve a holiday and because you love to travel to intesting ports. I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding this cruise on Costa Classica.

Caribcat, you've produced an excellent review, BUT if you haven't already done so, PLEASE copy it to the Classic's cruise review page where it will always be available for future cruisers. If you just leave it in the forum it will soon be covered with new threads and lost.

We are sailing with Costa Classica in March and are really looking forward to it. Thank you for the review. Apart from Hong Kong our ports of call are different though.

Hi again Caribcat,
What a fantastic review, we have already printed it and will be taking it with us when we go ![]() One other question you could answer for us if you would be so kind, what toiletries are supplied in the cabins? As we do not want to take any unnecessary items with us if we do not need to So glad you enjoyed the cruise, and once again thank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. |

Capricruiser - Thanks, I will certainly try and post the review where you suggested.
Gerton - Enjoy your cruise on Costa Classica next year, make the most of it. It is not a luxury ship, but the ports of call and the staff well make up for it. We would certainly sail on the Costa Classica again. Spaceman777 - You have a lot to look forward to. Too much to see and so little time, so plan your time in ports wisely. As for the bathrooms, you will find a box of tissues and a dispenser in the shower for shower gel and you will be supplied with a bar of hand soap. Not much I am afraid, but if you are limited on space or weight, I would buy your toiletries in Hong Kong or Singapore. You will have plenty of time for this and I do not think toiletries will be more expensive than in the UK. I have found good suncream to be expensive in Singapore, but not toiletries. There is a money changer right in the cruise centre where the ship docks in Singapore, not sure about HK, try not to change money on the ship. Don't worry about asking any more questions, I would be pleased to help out.

Hi Caribcat
I am cruising on Costa Classica boarding in Hong Kong on the 19th December and doing the same circuit that you did. One thing I would like to know is that when the ship reaches Ho Chi Minh City does it sail up the river and berth right in the city. I know that the Costa Allegra does but it is a smaller ship. I really enjoyed your report and am going to print it out and take it with me for reference. Regards ozlady55 |

Hi Caribcat,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, and thanks for the answer to my question about the toiletries , some one said on an earlier thread that there is a very good pharmacy in the shopping centre in the terminal in Hong Kong so we will buy anything we need there, I think it was called Watson's, I have never heard of it before as I think it is American and we are from the U.K.Also thanks for offering to answer further questions, that is so kind, I thought of one last night, were there a lot of mosquitoes in any of the ports or the places you visited, as they particularly like my blood but never bite my wife, she will wake up in the morning with no bites and I have ten , the same if we go out, she never gets bitten ![]() Also do you always sit with the same people for the whole of the cruise, or can you chop and change? Thanks once again for all your help

Ozlady55,
Yes the Classica does sail up the narrow passages of the river, as far as I know it is exactly the same route as the Costa Allegra. We did not get up to the deck for the views and to be honest this journey was slightly rough. Not rough enough for sea sickness but certainly rough enough for slight motion sickness. The time in Vietnam was not long enough for us. The first shuttle was at 8.30am and it took about 30 minutes to get to the Hotel Rex and the last shuttle from the Hotel Rex was at 3.15. Plan your day wisely at this port as the museums close for lunch. Leaving Vietnam there is a send off from the local girls, so try to be on deck when the ship leaves. In fact the Costa Classica has little deck room for viewing, so if you want to be on deck for the arrival or departure, you need to be up there early for a space for viewing. We left it too late on many a day and could not see anything. Some ports had music on arrival, and some on departure, but if you were not up on deck with a space, you missed it. Spaceman777 Yes Watsons is a good store, sells everything a usual chemist would sell and I can't imagine it would be as expensive as the UK. As for mosquitoes, I lived in the Caribbean for many years and have been bitten many times and I was worried about going on this cruise. I am happy to report that I came back without even one mosquitto bite. I did get bit on the ship a couple of times, but not from mosquittoes, they were small fly type insects and their sting did not last long. From my experience mosquittoes are worse at sunrise and sunset times and after heavy rains. If there was a mosquitto on this two week trip, it would have found me as they all do, so I think you are pretty safe. I brought all the sprays and creams with me, but did not have to use them, I am happy to report. As for table mates, if you board in HK, the first night is open seating, but in your cabin you will see a small piece of white paper on your bed which will tell you your table number and dinner time. You can certainly change the time if it does not suit you. To be honest, your dinner mates can make or break a cruise for you. You are with these people for the entire two weeks, only at night of course. We were so lucky, our table mates were fantastic, all from the UK and we had great conversations. At breakfast and lunch it is open seating and quite often we were seated with non English speaking guests, which was fine, but sometimes we were seated on our own or with guests from Australia and we had great fun with them. Dinner is usually over quite quickly as they turn the lights on and let you know when you should go, so it does not take up a lot of time. If for some reason after a night or two that you would prefer to be moved, just ask and I am sure they will do it for you, people do it all the time. Just remember, this cruise is your holiday, so you need to enjoy it and make the most of it. Happy Hours Most days the ship had a happy hour, from 11 am to 12 noon and 5pm to 9.00pm where you could buy one cocktail or wine or beer and get one free and this was quite popular with a lot of guests. Some guests would buy at happy hour and bring their drinks to the show, or dinner or even to the pizza restaurant, which was a good idea as happy hour was only in special lounges. The Captains changed over half way through our cruise, so at least you know the captain will be on board for the next three or four months. If anyone has any more questions, I would be happy to try to answer them, however I will be on holiday from Friday midnight until Thursday afternoon of next week.

Thanks from me as well Caribcat.
I am happy now that I know the Classica will sail up the river. The time in HCMC will be fine for me as I was there a couple of years ago and have seen most of the sights. I will be mainly doing some shopping so will have plenty of time. Regards ozlady55 |

Many thanks for your accurate and descriptive review on this cruise. My wife and I printed it off and took it with us (March 2010) and were very thankful that we did, it was extremely helpful. May you have a long and happy life.

When Ocean Terminal on Kowloon side is fully occupied the Costa have been using China Merchant Wharf at Kennedy Town on HK Island. Short stroll (5 mins) from Kennedy Town tram terminus . No big deal or inconvenience if you berth there .
