Bringing alcohol on board?

Obviously, RCI doesn't allow bringing your own hard liquor or beer on board, but what is the policy on wine or champagne?

Most cruise lines will allow you to carry a bottle or two of wine on board for "special occasions." We don't want to bring a bunch of booze on board, but we are celebrating an anniversary and would like to bring some of our own wine or champagne. What is RCI's official policy on this, and what have some of you experienced?

BTW, we're sailing on the Grandeur out of New Orleans, if it makes any difference.

This is from RCI's official web site:

Can I bring my own liquor onboard?

We apologize for any inconvenience but due to our regulatory and licensing requirements guests are not allowed to bring alcoholic beverages of any kind onboard for consumption or any other use.

Alcoholic beverages that are purchased duty-free from the Shops On Board or at ports of call will be stored by us and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of your voyage. A member of our staff will be at the gangway to assist with the storage of your purchases. Should you choose to consume alcoholic beverages purchased from the Shops On Board, a consumption fee will apply at the time of purchase. Note that no open liquor bottles will be permitted to be brought into dining areas or public areas.

This policy may not apply to every ship or itinerary depending on local laws, customs, or license requirements. Royal Caribbean is not responsible for fines imposed or items confiscated by local authorities.

Emphasis added.

We were recently on the Mariner. Arrived at embarkation with 2 bottles of wine in our carry on. Sailed right through security including the X-ray machine for the carry on bag. We've never had a problem with a RCL ship in spite of what their policy says.

We were on Empress last January and had no problem bringing wine on...you can even give it to your room steward and they will see that it makes it to your table at dinner. If you do that you pay a $12 per bottle "corking" fee!!! Never had a prblem getting bottles on board. Were in our carryons .

CruiseCritic has an article that does a pretty good job of explaining the cruiselines' alcohol policies. Here's the link:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/features/articles.cfm?ID=46

The best line in the article, IMO, is this:

"We'll admit, though: we don't quite understand the cruise lines' defense of their increasingly severe restrictions on what folks can bring onboard for consumption in their own cabins. (Safety and security? Balderdash. It's economics -- they want you to buy at their bars.)"

So don't buy the "regulatory and licensing requirements" garbage.

Anyway, we brought several bottles of our own cellared wine on our last RCI cruise, in our carryon, not a single problem, and we didn't even get charged a corkage fee, even though our wonderful waiter insisted on pouring for us. :)

We leave on the Grandeur Saturday ... my sister called RCI to get permission to bring wine on board. She was told she didn't need permission, that she would be charged the corkage fee at check in. I think the charge is $12 or something like that. We are brining the wine in our carry ons and hope that we are not charged the fee until we actually bring it to the dining room. Some of it we want to enjoy in our balcony cabin. But if we are charged, no big deal.

I have never heard of charging anything upon boarding. Boy, that's a new one! Trust me, if you are charged a corkage fee, it's only when you bring the wine to the dining room. You will not be charged for drinking it in your room. :)

We were on the Rhapsody last week and had two 12-packs of beer and a bottle of booze in our checked luggage. Didn't have a problem at all. Also bought beer in Key West and Cozumel, put it in our backpack and brought it back on the ship. No problem. 4_1_7v.gif
