We were on Rhapsody recently. We bought 4 bottles of wine at the Key West Winery fully expecting them to be taken from us when we reboarded the ship (which would have been fine with us as we bought them for Christmas gifts). The bottles were in a box clearly marked with the winery name on it. No problem. We ran the box through the x-ray machine as instructed and nobody even batted an eye at us.

I guess it depends on the port and the security on duty when you reboard the ship.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sometitmes they take it and sometimes they don't. If you are taking wine on to be consumed in the dining room you can tell them when you board (if you are asked) and they will let it pass because you will be paying a corkage fee in the dining room.

Nowhere in the cruise contract is alcohol expressly forbidden...it is left up to the discretion of RCI. If you do take booze onboard make sure that it is only consumed in your cabin unless you have wine sent down to the dining room where you will pay a corkage fee (and sometimes this is reduced or waived). What you do in your cabin is your business as long as you do not bother anyone else...you are entitled to privacy in your cabin as well as the contents of your luggage.

HAVE A GREAT CRUISE AND ENJOY.

When we sailed on the Radience in 02 we were made aware of the new no carryon alcohol policy. When boarding in San Juan we went directly to the liquor store in the terminal and purchased our weeks supply and put it in our carry on bag then went through secruity and xray. We were passed right through. Durring the week we purchased more at one of the ports and were told by the person running the xray to check it over at a table. We walked right passed the table and nothing was said.

We have justed booked a March cruise on the Explorer and I was wondering how closely this was enforced. I was afraid to ask for fear of being flamed as a being cheap. We buy a lot of drinks on board but I prefere to have my favorite in the room for convenience of a drink before dinner or later at night. Did'nt mean to ramble.

Thanks for the great info! I'm sailing on Grandeur of the Seas on January 29, and was planning to take a small bottle of booze, but now I think I'll go for the wine I really wanted. I have only cruised once and all the booze I bought in Mexico was taken from us and returned the night before we docked to come home, so I just assumed they were all the same and wouldn't let you drink on the ship anything but what they sell. Glad to hear there are other possibilities; however, I won't be too upset if they take it away -- always stay prepared! So I'll have some small shot bottles in my carry-on just in case!

After only 11 cruises , I figured out it was a waste of time to pack booze in my luggage as well as pop. After my 3rd cruise I realized it was way easier and at really the same cost with the 10.00 per bottle room usage charge to just buy it onboard. About an hour or so after you sail the stores open and then just purchase and get it sent to your room.

My last dumb stunt was putting two large bottles of Liquor in my suitcase and I had to pay an overweight fee of 25$ USD (I was 1lb overlimit) grrrrr!!!

Never again do I or will I put liquor in my lugage. Way too simple to just go to the liquor store on board the ship.

Folgy, you are so right. When I brought liquor home from Mexico it cost us about 50 bucks in overweight charges on our flight home. This was not something I even knew about. So I really didn't save any money on the Kahlua. It was definitely a waste. For now I can't really drink much since my kids are still quite young. I just stick with buying the expensive drinks on board after the kids are asleep and the wife lets me out of the cabin. On our last cruise we had a great arrangement. After dinner I took the kids to the cabin to get them to sleep and she went to the show. She came back and I went to the casino or the pub they had on Mariner. Great fun :)

We took 4 bottles of wine in our carry-one when boarding the Mariner in Cape Canaveral and nothing was said. At each of our ports when we got back on the ship they were taking any bottles they saw from the x-rays away from the passengers. They weren't even polite about it.
