Liquor Question

I love my rum and want to have a bottle in my cabin. In looking at what I can pre-order through Princess the only dark rum available is Captain Morgans and I'm not that fond of this brand.

I called Princess to see if I could order anything else and was told no. I was also told I would not be able to buy any other brand when I got on board the ship. I was assuming there would be other brands available in the bars.

The Princes rep agreed with me that my only option is to bring my own bottle on board. While I'm not against this, traveling with a bottle could be quite a pain. Does anyone know if the information above is accurate?

Thanks a lot.

We usually stop at a liquor store in Ft Lauderdale the night before the cruise and get wine to bring onboard. We just tell the agents at the check-in that we have wine and they say "no problem!" Not sure about Rum, but if the Princess rep told you it was okay, I guess it's okay.

I understand your dilemma.

I'm a bourbon drinker and they only offer Jack Daniels for pre-order. Not only is it not my favorite, but I really dislike Jack Daniels.

So...I always pack it in my suitcase. I wrap a sweater around the bottle and pack it in the middle of my suitcase. I've never had any breakage (knock on wood!) and have never had any trouble getting it in to my cabin.

You can bring wine on board, but not hard liquor. If you tried to carry on hard liquor there is a very good chance they would take it from you and hold for you until you disembark. This, of course, will defeat your original intention.

As far as purchasing bottles on board. In the past, we have been able to purchase brands other than those listed. I was able to buy a bottle of Jim Beam.

I do know that (especially on the longer cruises) it's wise to buy early. If they ships inventory starts to become depleated, they may not sell you what you're looking for.

So..I don't know if that policy has changed, varies from ship to ship or if I just got lucky.

I am about 90% sure that they have Cruzan rum or some other rum in the gift shop area. I think you have to pay an extra fee like $10 to take it back to your cabin with you. I am not 100% sure though you might not want to hold out on that until someone else can confirm it. I did see on the boards though that you can buy bottles from any of the bars. Anything that they serve at the bar is available for purchase for your room.

Nope

You can get Baccardi, Cruzan and any other bottle they have at the bar delivered to your stateroom by ordering when on board. You'll save a couple bucks off the prices listed on the website too. We ordered Baccardi silver and it was the same price as Captain Morgans Spiced Rum but that might have just been a coincidence. Tanqueray Gin was also not on the website list and available for us to purchase when on board.

At least that was what I did on the Golden, Star and Caribbean Princess, all ships may not be the same I suppose.

I saw no reason to bring it with me from shore as the prices, I thought, were reasonable. If I had wanted to bring it from shore I truly believe that I could have duct taped it to my head and no one would have said anything....at least nothing like "you can't bring that with you". Some might have looked at me funny but what else is new?

Crowsie....I have a question for you. I too despise Jack D. You said you were able to buy a bottle of Jim Beam...was this in shop (and was there a fee to take to room) or did you buy it at a bar? Also do they have Jim Beam Black? We are doing the Diamond...Sydney to SFO so flying from Fla it would be impossible (or a pain in the a**) to carry it with me. Do you remember the price? Not sure if I should just try and buy some in Sydney. Any advice would be appreciated.

We are picky rum drinkers..have always packed a liter of rum ..rolled in bubble wrap..then in plastic bag..and packed in between clothes either in checked bag or carry ons..never had a problem yet :)..(hope we never do)..nice to have our own special little drink before dinner or before bed without having to call room service..

For those about to "bash" about not ordering from bars etc..we do plenty of that at dinner and the shows..casino etc during the evenings..it's strictly for convenience...and one liter gets us through a 10 day cruise no problem...

We also bring one or two 2liters of diet coke cause we like the flavored kinds..lime and vanilla and they can't be found on board...

Hi,

We were on Grand Princess Dec 18-28. I'm looking at the liquor list from the onboard store, and they do have Myer's rum ($9.95). I don't remember, however, if it was on the room service list. We ordered Captain Morgan's from room service, so I would hope they allow any other rum to be ordered that way. They did not, however, allow you to buy in the store and take it back to your cabin. Either you waited until the last day to get it, or you ordered from room service.

Good luck,

Philip

I've noticed that the purchase prices on the ship for bottles ordered to your room are $2 cheaper than if you pre-purchase ahead of your cruise via the Princess website. I was wondering if they charge you the automatic 15% gratuity fee on top of the cost of the booze. I was thinking of ordering some rum for my room but am not sure if I should order now or once on board.

Help?

Can you tell me if the Captain Morgan that you ordered from room service was a liter or a 750ml? Did you order it from room service or preorder it ahead of time?? Was ther a 15% gratuity added on or just a tip to room service?? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Ours (and most I think) was a full 1 liter bottle. Once we preordered then learned that its $2 cheaper to do it on board. The only tip we gave was to the guy that delivered it, no auto tip on the bottles.

Chris..

The Jim Beam we purchased was from one of the bars. We were told that only one bar onboard would sell you bottles..so we had to go to that specific bar. Now...this was on the Royal Princess..so they might have different policies on the bigger ships.

The bottles you buy from the shops are duty free and will be delivered to your stateroom on the day you disembark..you may not purchase from the store to drink in your cabin..and there are signs posted in the stores stating this.

I don't know about Jim Beam black because I never inquired.

Also...don't be so sure that you can buy Jim Beam in Sydney...most of the world has no idea what American Bourbon is. We tried to buy bourbon and sweet vermouth when we were in Asia the 1st time and they looked at us like we were nuts.

I recommend you try asking one of the Aussies that frequent the board if you can readily purchase bourbon in the bottle shops there.

We've learned to pack it with us because it's so difficult to get it in different parts of the world.

How hard would it be to carry a bottle back on from one of the ports? I imagine you would be able to find your brand in most ports.

From my experience with people carrying booze back onto the ship from port is, it's confiscated then delivered to your room on the last day of the cruise. However, I saw one couple who carried tequila from the tequila factory in bags on board without confiscation. It's better that you BYOB of what you like to drink when you board.

Here's an Idea friends:

Hubby is a huge fan of Jack Daniels - which just so happens to be the same color of Listerine - We have already sanitized listerine plastic bottles (no listerine smell left) and are gonna fill them with Jack - You can fill water bottles with Rum, (clear) - etc. Just use the imagination -

You can buy a bottle of Jack Daniels onboard for a reasonable price so why go through all of the trouble??
