Carnival Victory Review with Pictures

Let me start by telling you a little about us so you can see what perspective my review is coming from. We are, Jen (me) 42, Mike 44 and two kids, a 14-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, in a cast above her elbow (bummer). We love to cruise and since our first cruise in 2001 (during the week of 9/11 actually…that was interesting and a story for another time) we have cruised every year. We have cruise 5 different lines including RCCL, Carnival, Princess, NCL and Disney. I have found that while I have a favorite, each cruise line has done “something” better than all the rest. Be it decor, design, food, or entertainment. Since I am lucky enough to cruise every year, I don’t look at it like this is a once in a lifetime vacation so it is easier to let the little things slide. It doesn’t have to be perfect every time. It’s a cruise, how lucky am I.

Our cruise that we had been planning for over year was finally here. Yippee. While looking for flights from Denver to San Juan, we quickly realized that we would have to layover somewhere. We decided to make this to our advantage and I chose the layover city to be Orlando. We took off from Denver at 5 pm (so the kids would miss as little school as possible, they had fall break so my son was only missing 2 days and my daughter 0) and landed in Orlando at 10:30. I got a hotwire rate of $36 for the Best Western by Universal Studios. The next morning we checked out, checked into the Hard Rock Hotel and hit the parks. I won’t go into this part of the trip because I know that is not why we are here! I will say however, that when you stay on property in Universal Studios you get front of the line passes. These completely paid for the increase in hotel prices (we paid $256 with AAA per night). While others were waiting an hour for a ride, we waited 3-5 minutes. It was great. We went to the airport Saturday night for our JetBlue 7:45 flight to San Juan. It ended up being a 9:30 flight so we arrived in San Juan at about a quarter til 1 am. It was a little unnerving but I’m sure it was just my freakiness.

We were staying at the Intercontinental Hotel, which I secure on Hotwire for $109 for the night. The cab ride from the airport here was $15. We arrived at around 1am and the hotel was hopping. I couldn’t believe there were so many people out. You would have thought you were on a cruise ship! Actually, the whole city that we saw, was hoping. One thing I though interesting was to get to this hotel you have to turn down this back road. It is kind of weird and of course, I thought we were about to get mugged but once again, I am seeking therapy for my paranoia. After a good nights sleep in an amazingly comfortable bed, my husband and I abandoned our children who were only interested in watching tv (pathetic) to explore the hotel and grounds. My daughter, who is usually very competent, packed her own luggage. Much to both of our horrors, we quickly realized that the shorts she had packed, did not fit…..ALL OF THEM (she had packed two pairs of jean shorts for the cruise, forgetting the pair she pulled out to wear prior to the cruise which DID fit). She had apparently grown quite a bit in the past couple of months. I went down to the store in the hotel and low and behold, they had a pair of black shorts (swim but still) in her size (she is 11 yrs old) What luck. I took them up stairs and she proceeded to tell me she didn’t like them. I have to censor what happened in the next couple of minutes but she is healing nicely from where the shorts flew into her from me throwing them (kidding).

On to the grounds, they were lovely. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. It is right on the beach and has a great pool. We sat on the deck, drinking coffee staring out toward the sea. It was so peaceful.

Finally, it was time to head to the cruise ship. We started over around 11:30. Mike had to wait in a line to check out but it wasn’t too bad. The cab ride from the hotel to the dock was $19 plus $1 a bag. I mentioned the guy in San Juan who pretends to be an American who got beat up to swindle people out of there money and the cab driver overheard and said he had driven many people who had been swindled by this guy but had never heard anyone mention him without meeting him. He was glad the news was getting out about the con man.

We had spent some wonderful time in Old San Juan a couple years back so decided to forgo the exploration as it was around 1000 degrees outside. Here is the video I did of Old San Juan, it was a fantastic day. http://gallery.me.com/flipfloppincastaways#100198 The first quarter of the video is aboard the Freedom of the Seas (we docked at 3pm) the rest is San Juan.

We arrived at the port around noon. Dropped off our luggage, tipped and walked to the terminal. It was very easy.

DSC03642.jpg

My girlfriend who arrived around 3 or 4 said the cabbie couldn’t even get close, it was so backed up with arrivals. We went upstairs, quickly marked NO on the “If you want to be quarantined mark yes on this sheet” forms (which happened to be true. And waited in line approximately 10 minutes. No problem. We ran into some friends from the roll call in line. That was fun. After you get your sailaway card you walk through a section where they are handing out drink samples and selling pop (coke products - $4.95 a six pack), water ($5.95 an eight pack), wine (red and white around $25 bottle) and a full liquor store although of course you can’t drink it while on board. There is also a CVS with cheaper pop and water but for us it was worth paying a little more and not having to carry it. I would say it was about 2 or 3 blocks from where the cab pulls up but it you count the cruise terminal and walkway you would add another block or two.

Yippee, we were on board. We headed up to the lido deck to get some food. I got a sandwich from the deli and it was outstanding. It’s a good thing, too, because I would be having a lot of them throughout the week. I got two sandwiches, actually (split with my daughter), an arugalla, tom, mozzarella and a turkey. The turkey is really good quality (I am kind of a meat freak, another issue I will bring up in therapy, but I like good quality meat and boy was this good quality). I later found out you can get any sandwich hot so for the rest of the week I combined the two (turkey on mozz/tom/arug and had it heated….yum!)

Then my daughter and I went exploring, while the boys headed to the sports bar to watch the Broncos lose. Good fun. (there was not bartender in the sports bar so they hung out at the casino bar) After looking at pictures of this ship, I thought I had been on one like her before. Turns out I had, only this one was A LOT smaller. Kind of like a diorama of the last one. The cabins weren’t going to be ready until 2:30 but carrying around the pop/water was getting old so we decided to sneak in and drop it off in the closet. It turns out the room was ready anyway. I was a little shocked to see how small it was compared to the other ships I had been on. I just kept reminding myself, that I hadn’t been on a smaller ship in 8 years. It was plenty big enough for us as all we did was sleep in it.

I have some great recommendations for you....definitely. To get you started look up http://www.bumpiingtours.com/

Levi was by far our favorite tour guide. So personal and very candid about his life. We swam Titou Gorge and went to Trafalgar Falls. More to come

Our favorite unique excursion was climbing the Ghaunt River in St Kitts. myislandstours.shutterfly.com Javin was great. His story is he married a girl from new jersey and while he was courting her he took her to his favorite place where he ran free as a kid. She told him you have to make this available to more people so he did. It was intimate, amazing, beautiful. It was a lot of climbing so if you are in BAD shape don't do it but I am 42 and fluffy and loved it.

Favorite all over day, however was St martin. A couple years ago we did Capt Alan's three island snorkeling tour and loved it. When we went back this year we chartered him for the whole day. We circumvented St marteen. It was awesome. http://www.captainalan.com/challenge/index.htm Here is my movie of that day (just the four hour tour) http://gallery.me.com/flipfloppincastaways#100238

In St Lucia we hired Herod for his land and sea package. We had several people on this tour who said it was their favorite day.

In Barbados we went to the Boatyard.

Hope this helps give you ideas. i will post more on the individual days later

Awesome! Thank you! We are unfortunately not stopping in Dominca - that port has been cancelled permanently from Victory's sailing starting in November. We have Herod booked already for St Lucia and are really thinking beaches most of the other days. I've been to St Thomas many times, but never St John's so may venture over there. I will check out Javin. Sounds perfect! Thanks again!

Javin usually will do an island tour, with the fort and circumvent the island. If it were me, I would skip the island tour and fort have him take you to the rain forest and river climb earlier either leaving more time for this (which would have been awesome but it was tiring also) or more time at the beach (we went to Conkleshell). Personally, I wasn't impressed with conkelshell at all. Just some thoughts. We were tired of driving by the end of the week but it sure was great to see all the different islands.

Tell him we (Jen and Karin and families) recommended you.

We strolled and played a little more. At around 6 pm went met up with our friends and headed into San Juan. There is a wonderful little bar that we love to go to called Barrachina. I just adore the ambiance of this place and the drinks aren’t half bad either. It is behind Senior Frogs about 5 blocks up. Give or take a block.

It is the reported (self) home of the Pina Colada. I tried out several just to make sure they were up to snuff. They apparently make the best mojitos on the island too (once again, so says they). Never one to take someone’s word, I felt it was my duty to try them out so I could report back to you all. My determination: it takes a much better drinker than I to make that pronouncement. They were strong. I thought maybe it was just the first one so I had a second to be sure…. still strong. My girlfriend finished it before it finished me!

We next walked over to Senor Frogs to see what was happening. In a word, nothing. However we still stayed and had a drink (didn’t want to be rude) and took the obligatory butt barstool photos.

We headed by CVS for snacks (for excursion days) and then back to the ship.

DSC03785.jpg

All aboard was at 9 pm for the 9:30 muster. The muster was painful. Even more painful than usual. The good thing was we didn’t have to take our life jackets……yea! The bad thing, everything else. I am a very timely person and I always have to wait for stragglers forever so I intentionally tried to be late. I left my stateroom at 9:30. I should have known when no one was in the stairs that I would be early, once again. So there I was, in the back row in the claustrophobic area that is Carnival’s promenade deck (what is normally the promenade on other ships anyway), surrounded by huge life boats, white metal and hundreds of people, all of which were in front of me as they came in later than me, humph. They proceed by announcing everything in English and then announcing everything in Spanish. Apparently, you need a lot more words in Spanish to say the same thing because it was Looonnnngggg.

Next we went upstairs for the sailaway party. I have to say, I was impressed. I have never seen so many people dancing in all the cruises I have been on.

DSC03806.jpg

DSC03812.jpg

Freddie even came by to pose for photographs....photographs that the staff was taking that is. Who would have thought that a stuffed character could move that quick. I have a fast shutter finger too!

DSC03811.jpg

It was so fun and the entertainment staff did an amazing job. I bet there were 400 people dancing in front of the hot tubs.

DSC03818.jpg

Really long conga line....

DSC03821.jpg

The entertainment staff "entertaining". A funny note. There is a guy (not really sure he is part of the entertainment staff but works there anyway....He is a former latin champion dancer or something. Watching him dance is entertainment in itself. He is good, no doubt but it is funny watching the whole ship do the Achy Breaky Heart choreography and him shimmering to a jazz square. Certainly dances to his own beat. He is a lot of fun. Every port we were in he would be waiting with the exit sign by the door saying "Welcome to Alaska" or "Welcome to Alcatraz" Throughout the week we were in Vegas, Alaska, Mazatlan, Alcatraz, Miami Beach...I'm missing one. He would also switch the exit sign around so that people exited into an alcove. Fun guy. I do think that this is where Carnival excels over other lines. Not taking themselves too seriously.

Super fun. The band then kicked in and it was awesome. After about the 5th song the music changed to all latin music for the Puerto Rican guests, I assume. I soon lost interest and left. It was a good time. We headed back to the cabin for bed. Tomorrow, St Thomas!

Wow.....all of this sure does look familiar!! LOL!!:D

Hey Jenn! Great review and awesome pics! I was just showing this to one of my co-workers who was asking me all about the cruise this morning.....

You may have to email me some pics of the Lido Deck. I don't think I took any up there.

Here are some pictures of the room. Like I said, it was small but adequate. I liked the upper and lower beds for the kids. Although, every time my daughter rolled over she smacked the bar with her cast and we all shot out of bed like the abandon ship siren was going off. Good thing it only happened 12 or 13 times a night! The other thing I noticed was while the rooms seemed very sound proof (we never heard noise from any direction but one) The Hallway! That door must have been made of paper or some sound amplifying material. It was crazy. We had a Puerto Rican family across the hallway who would have parties in the hall every day/night. Complete with blowup palm trees and cabana boys. Okay, maybe i am over stating but it was always during nap time, which of course I needed because of the lack or REM sleep all night due to the cast clanging. Maybe I am just bitter because I was never invited. About 10 doors down there was a cabin who always had the music blasting inside. (Or maybe it wasn't blasting, we have already established that the doors offer no sound buffering) I was wondering what their neighbors thought of them. Otherwise, no complaints. Good place to sleep. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom which is basically a hose. It does a good job (although i have really short hair). After a couple minutes, the one in my cabin would get so hot you couldn't hold it anymore. Which made drying your hair more difficult. you would have to prop it up and wave your head back and forth over it like a groupie at a heavy metal concert. Or you could just grab a wash cloth and hold it with that.....but what fun is that!

There was a huge storage cabinet in the bathroom.

DSC03723.jpg

DSC03724.jpg

DSC03790.jpg

Cast girl being crazy.

A couple other things about the room and the ship. There is ample storage, like in most cruise rooms. In my quad there were three drawers and two cabinets with three shelves each. One of the cabinets was quite deep. There were three closets, two with areas to hang....the bottom of these closets had no rods so you could stick your suitcases (and obviously shoes in there). If you have room, I would stick a bunch of wire hangers in your bag and then just leave them. I know you can ask for them but I needed a ton. Also, our bed had some kind of fold up contraption under it (maybe a crib) so there wasn't room for bags, kindof a bummer but not a big enough deal to ask for it to be removed as there was ample room in the closets. The last closet had the safe, a shelf and then the life jackets. I am a complete bed wimp. I don't like hard beds. I know most people do. Just another way I am weird. If you are weird like me, ask the room steward to put an additional comforter on it. It helped a lot. There were two outlets on the desk and one in the bathroom dryer (which you had to hold it in the socket but hey, at least it was there. It was also nice to have the hairdryer in the bathroom instead of taking up drawer space. There is a safe but you have to have a magnetic strip card to lock it so you have to keep up with that. Try and remember to bring one that is not important like a Safeway card or AAA instead of having to carry around your Visa all the time.

There are several laundry self serves on board. They are really strict about the swim towels. if you only have three, you will only get three back (I even tipped the steward additional and early). My friend was told that they only got what they turned in at the laundry. I don't know if you would have been charged additional or not as ours turned up in our friends room.

Anytime time dining was in the center dining room (???name) upstairs. I would think twice before doing this again, personally. We had the worst service we have ever had before. I don't know exactly why. I am speculating it is because of a couple or things....maybe it was the time we were there. We seemed to always be there when the show was going on.....so everything would stop so they could sing. I don't mind that but it may have contributed to the over all slowness. Maybe it was because there routine was off having people come at all times....I don't know exactly. Most of the time it was noticeable but not a big deal. You would sit down and it would take around 5 min for anyone to acknowledge you or bring you a drink....and then it seemed like you were always waiting, drinks empty etc but we were talking and enjoying each others company so it was ok. The last time we ate there, we had dirty plates sitting on our table for 20 min (I timed it). The waiter was there, and he was joking around like no problem. I wouldn't have been so frustrated if he looked like he was over his head. The song did come during this time. The waiter had a try full of meals (around 15) and he let the hot food sit there while he sang. Finally, I flagged someone else down and asked for a dessert menu, ordered and got coffee. They brought the coffee to the serving station behind me. After about 5 minutes, I turned to get it. It is funny how quick you get service when you start to serve yourself. I smiled and commented that we needed to get going. I tried to arrange my hair to cover the steam coming out of my ears. You would have been proud of me (we would have left but it was my son's first night in the dining room and he wanted dessert). Anyway, this night was definitely the worst but I noticed it every night. I do wonder if it has to do with anytime dining. Just my experiences, hopefully I am the only one who had these issues.

The food was pretty good, however. I never think cruise food is the wonderful, afterall, they have to serve a ton of people at one time but there were some pretty good selections. The first that comes to mind was the tiramisu on the first night. It was sooo cold and yummy. The chicken tenders were good (not fried but marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce), all the soups I tried were good, corn chowder, minestrone, baked potato soup.....the chicken carbonara was good but it was lobster night so I am probably the only one who will have it. Good job Carnival!

Breakfast was in the aft dining room every morning. I always had the eggs benedict which I really liked. Oddly enough they don't base their open time on the port schedule so on the early days (like St Marteen 7am) the dining room didn't open until 7:30. No biggie, but odd.

The shows in the dining room were a lot of fun and really good. Once again, credit to Carnival for not taking themselves to serious. They really rocked it and did some fun numbers. On the third day or so, a young couple we hung out with in the piano bar got stuck on the stairs during a number so they just played along. The next couple of nights, they found there new spot on the stairs and joined the crew. It was fun to watch them live it up and get the most out of the cruise.

DSC03924.jpg

We didn't see a lot of the shows. we did see the comedian R rated version. He had his moments but if you are having fun else where, definitely do not leave to see him. The liar's show (?) made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to attract attention. Henni from South Africa who is part of the cruise ent staff is sooooo funny. (I might have gotten the name wrong). We mostly hung out with Justin in the Piano Bar. A lot of fun was had in that room.

Today was St Thomas. What a beautiful place. We, however have been here three other times and since this day 5 of our vacation with a heavy schedule still to come we decided to stay on the ship. Wow. It was awesome and empty. This is a great cruise to go on if you have been to all the ports. You have the ship to yourself. We hung at the pool and watch an interview with Genesis on the jumbo tron. Interesting choice. Afterwards, they played a really good country concert.

While I am thinking about it. We were on the port side of the ship (I think....even numbered rooms) and we were facing the port on just about ever stop. I think it was St Marteen that it would have been better to be starboard but otherwise port was best for us. I realize this could change if they back in etc.

I've read a lot of reviews since we booked our Victory cruise last spring (and now only 67 days to go)...and so far yours is my favorite. Love all the little details. You're right about the doors and sound. The same thing happens in my apartment building - rarely here anything from any adjoining units - even when my neighbor's toddler throws a temper tantrum, its muffled and muted at worse, but i can hear every single thing that goes on in the hallway....even if it's down and around the corner.

At 3:30 we headed up stairs to get ready for our meet and mingle. we had a great roll call this time and I was really excited to put faces with names. One of our group had arranged an open bar for $11.44 a person (payed before hand) They limited it at 20 but that day served everyone. It was great. We had quite a turnout.

Someone brought a fun thing.....little ducks that you are supposed to take with you and take pics and then upload (long story behind it but we had fun with them)

The kids played a couple of games of laser tag while we went to dinner. The laser tag was offered a couple of times that week for $5 for 5 minutes. The kids really enjoyed it.

I'll sneak in a picture or two

The Lido deck in general or the sailaway party?

I still find myself wobbling from side to side a little....even Mike said he was doing that yesterday and he never has that happen after a cruise. Other than that, I am getting back to the real world and looking forward to the holidays and planning our Disney trip in March!

We also loved hanging out you guys last week! Mike and I both feel like we have made some great friends and hopefully can vacation together at least once a year!

I know....the countdown has begun for next year, huh? Mike said he doesn't want to know until it's time to go....oh well, he'll be hearing it anyway..LOL!!

You have some great pics! I think I need some of the Lido deck in general. I haven't even had time to go through all my pics yet, so I don't remember what I have and what I don't have.

We headed over to the karaoke lounge and listened to the vocal talents of…..well one girl, and the not so vocal talents of everyone else. There was this lady there who was quite a character to behold. She was dancing to her own drummer. I can’t really explain how crazy she was but here is an example. This man got up and sang “My girl” and she got on stage with him and was all over him pantomiming to his song. This went on all night both off stage and on. She was very entertaining and we would see much more of her throughout the cruise. More to come which promises to entertain, but just to clarify, when I say girl, I mean a French woman around 50 or 60 years old.

DSC03928.jpg

DSC03927.jpg

Next we found ourselves in the piano bar. We love this place. It is really easy to meet friends and Justin is awesome. He has a blog on youtube if you are interested

This is actually our week.

His last week is the week before they go into dry dock (Nov 3rd).

DSC03931-1.jpg

An interesting fact about Justin. He decided he wanted to do the piano giggy thing and learned 200 songs in 2 weeks. At that time he had never heard Margarittaville. Can you imagine. Well, he has heard it now......nightly!

Around midnight, a huge group of people crowded into the bar. Apparently there was a fun pub crawl going on. I didn't do this but it looked like they were having quite a bit of fun. Apparently, they visit all the venues and participate in each one of them. They sang Brown Eyed Girl led by the Karl (with a K), the cruise director and unfortunately for everyone there, me. I was too close to Karl apparently. It is funny how you think you know the words until you have to sing them to a crowd.

Afterwards, we sang this group out of the piano bar with a little "nananana, nananana, hey hey hey good bye". They went next door and did the world's largest rendition (unofficially) of Summer Lovin' (Grease).

All sounds very familiar. We sailed Oct. 3. We stayed at the Intercontinental also. My first impression was terrible. We had been in airports since 4:30 am and arrived there at 11:30 pm. We walked in to extremely loud salsa music in the bar and were told that continental breakfast was $18 pp. It was a nice place though.

We loved going to the piano bar. We always had a good time and liked Justin. He needs to know a few more songs though, he would ask for requests but didn't know any of them. I think it was just something he wanted to do to say he'd done it but it's not his passion.

Jenn-didn't you say that there was no dinner on the Lido deck (outside part) on this ship? I know I went up there on Wed (when Mike was sick) to grab a bite, but there was nothing and I mean nothing there. I had to go around and get some pizza.
