Default Live from the Brilliance - at 3:45 am all H*** broke loose!

We were sailing in a storm all day yesterday on our way to Alexandria - dining room was almost empty. At 3:45 am, the ship listed 10-15% each way, over and over again. I was flying back and forth. My roomie managed to brace herself. The beds were sliding back and forth!! Broken glass everywhere as everything on it went flying. Tables and chairs upended.

We are okay - not sure if there are any injuries. I am just bruised.

It happened as we had to slow down while entering the port area of Alexandria to avoid ship traffic. The stabilizers then didn't work.

We have sailed out to sea into the storm. It is calmer, but we're still rocking. Windjammer is closed. Only dining venue is the Dining room for a continental breakfast. We may or may not make it to Alexandria - we were due for an overnight.

The crew was called out in the night. Cabin attendants checked all the rooms to see if anyone needed help. Now the massive cleanup begins!

Shoot, Sorry you are having a time of it.
I hope things calm down, and you can get this experience behind you.
I also hope your fellow passengers came out of this, the same as you.
Weather is such a fickle thing,
so are the thousands and thousand of parts,
that make the ship sail smooth.

Hi Carol!

Sorry, you had such a rough experience in "my neck of the woods"! Glad to hear, that you´re all o.k.!

I just read that the MSC Magnifica changed her route and is on the way to Rhodes instead of Alexandria today. Can´t see the Brilliance on marinetraffic. You seem to be out of the AIS signal reach.

We had a similar experience on the Celebrity Summit in September when we "met" hurricane Earl on our way back to Cape Liberty. By 4 am everything fell down, beds were moving sideways. Lots of damage all around the ship. All stuff in the MDR (which was already laid out for breakfast) fell off the tables. By some means I got up earlier that night and at least fixed all stuff in the bathroom. So we were lucky and nothing broke in our cabin. The flower vase dripped over and my dailies soaked up the water. Others had their TV sets falling down (and the Summit still has the old non flat screen ones).

Listing is scary, but who told you 10-15%? Or is it just your guess? And do you mean 10-15 Degrees? That's a lot of list.

Just got a call from my son and DIL who are on their honeymoon. They said very scary as well. Hope to have video soon they are trying to send from their phone. Will send some updates when I have them. They said all computers had smashed in internet cafe and Grand piano smashed into wall. Much broken glass all over ship, Windjammer closed.

They said 20% list, but don't know how they would know that.

Who is "they"? 20% of what? 90 Degree? 180 degrees? 20% of 90 degrees which is the angle between the top of the ship and the ocean surface would be at least 18 degrees which is a large list for a ship. I bet in the final analysis it's less than that. I'm not downplaying that it was scary, but unless someone knows for sure they need to be careful what they report as fact. Reports of lists on here have almost always been overdone and end up being a lot less than people perceive while onboard.

I'm sure all the people on the ship and family and friends who like myself are watching developments are really grateful for the maths lesson.
How awful of the people to have perhaps over estimated the list.

Yeah, I mean what's a few degrees listing between friends?

I don't know. I am the world's worse pedant, but under these circumstances unnecessary and futile.

For furniture to be rearranged in a cabin and for the beds to move and glass to shatter........it must have been one heck of a list.

Dirtgirl: Glad you & roomie are OK. Hope no one had any serious injury. Personally, the numbers (10-15, percent or degrees) mean nothing. It's the actual experience that gets the point across. I would have been petrified, that's for sure. Wishing you a better time from here on out! Stay safe.

Default From Dr.Fun on the Brilliance

My good friend (and Cruise Critic member) Dr.Fun is on the Brilliance of the Seas. She wrote the following email last night:
Horrid rollovers at sea approaching Alexandria an hour ago at 2 am. Thrown from bed + nearly pinned between bed that was wildly rolling to the walls and balcony slider -- with upended furniture + broken glass everywhere. Feet cut as we tried to get out of room, and badly bruised, but glad to be alive. Very sore. Very scary.... Worse as we're up on deck 10. Couldn't quite make it to Alexandria, but don't know where we"re going--and it's still very bumpy and terrifying.

I had used her quote last night to start a thread about the turbulence on the Brilliance, but this later thread seems to be the dominant one. Let's keep the discussion here.

Cuz there's an APP for that....actually there are meters on the bridge that can document such a roll. I am sure the deck officers and watch standing deck hand all wanted to know exactly how much roll there was as they took action...

Glad to hear everyone is ok. Hope the damage does not caus too much disruption to on board activities that folks want to do.

Prayers for a safe end to your journey!

The crew was called out in the night. Cabin attendants checked all the rooms to see if anyone needed help. Now the massive cleanup begins!

Listing to port: Today this phrase is used to describe someone who appears to be unsteady on their feet, perhaps from the effects of fatigue or alcohol. .....hmmmmm

Hope your ok.

I bet in the final analysis it's less than that. I'm not downplaying that it was scary, but unless someone knows for sure they need to be careful what they report as fact. Reports of lists on here have almost always been overdone and end up being a lot less than people perceive while onboard.

A tilt of 15 degrees or more is considered severe.
The duration of the tilt is also a factor in its severity: more than 5 or 10 seconds is considered a severe list, even at small angles.
Because of advances in cruise ship engineering and navigation technology, a cruise ship tilt are caused by human error, one of the officers piloting the vessel.

What an awful experience, Carol. Thank goodness you and Laura are OK. Has it put you off cruising yet

Here's hoping you are sailing into much calmer waters.
