SS United States Sold

S.S. United States Conservancy has finally bought the S.S. United States, tied up in Philadelphia for a reported $3 million. It seems Philadelphia, Miami and New York are the front runners for a Queen Mary 1 type use for the old girl. Good luck to them.

Thanks for that news. I forgot about the old girl. NCL had owned the ship for some time, actually. They were going to refurbish it and run it on the Hawaii routes because she'd be one of the few ships that were both flagged and built in the US.

She was a good sized girl back in the day and still holds transatlantic speed records. Some great information on Wikipedia. Wanna hear fast? She went from NY to UK in under 4 days at a speed of over 35kts

I said it from the day they bought the ship and said they'd refurbish her that the only reason they bought her was to keep other cruiselines from buying her and giving NCL competition in Hawaii.

Just my opinion but I believe they never had any intention of refurbishing her.

This news makes me very happy. Now the next chapter can begin. I never thought about Miami being in the running! I always thought she'd look nice tied up along side the Intrepid in New York. What a great pre-cruise hotel. I think that would set the tone for a cruise leaving New York.

SS United States trivia: In 1963 the BigU carried the Mona Lisa back to France after a U.S. art tour.

The SS France (aka SS Norway) had brought the Mona Lisa to the United States prior to the tour.

The Mona Lisa had her own stateroom, with guards, both ways.

I wish the Conservatory well on the refurbishment of the SSUS

That is great news! It is very sad to see this ship just sitting there and deteriorating. Anyone know where she will be moved too?

...and/or to hold as a "surrogate" (along with the SS Independence) to allow the temporary re-flagging of two of NCL's foreign-built ships for use in the Hawaii market.

She's in Philadelphia and has been there for a number of years.

I know it would NEVER happen but what could be greater than having the SS United States restored and she sailed to Bermuda out of Philadelphia?
