Fascination Review 4/11/2011 - KW & Nassau

This trip was a Birthday/Anniversary present for my husband. We were going to drive down from IL, so we picked the closest FL port. Ultimately, we flew in, if I would've known we were doing this we probably would've left from a different port. I REALLY wanted to visit HMC, but since this was a present for my DH, he picked the ports.

On this trip, my DH (38), myself (30), and my DS (2). It's our 2nd cruise & the 1st for my son.

We arrive in Jacksonville 2 days before we board.

Originally, we booked the cheapest hotel we could find, The Jacksonville Plaza Hotel.

What a mistake.

We walk in & the lobby smells like bleach. We start the check in process & since we're a bit early, the clerk asks us to wait a minute while he checks if there are any rooms ready.

He proceeds to leave us at the counter, takes the elevator, to physically check if there are any rooms available.

Twice.

Once we get to the room, it stinks. It's classified as a Non-Smoking Room but someone has been smoking non stop in this room in the last 24 hours. It reeks.

The mattresses on the beds are bowed, I could probably set my 2yr on the corner & have him roll back & forth. The sheets, which are very, very used, had holes where moths or some other insect ate at them. Although the room had just been cleaned, it was anything but.

We head back downstairs & check out.

I will say that the shuttle service was excellent but not enough to entice us to stay.

I had booked this through a hotel site & the hotel refused to refund us. In the end, the $50 lost was worth not spending a night here.

We hauled our bags across the parking lot to the Hyatt Place right next door & checked in.

MUCH BETTER!

Newer hotel, spacious rooms, continental breakfast, pool, 24 hr shuttle service. I can't say enough about this hotel, the people were great, the room was great, the service was outstanding. We paid a bit more but it was worth it.

We take advantage of their free shuttle service. They will shuttle you anywhere within a 5 mile radius. There are many dining options plus the Riverside Mall close by. We have dinner & head back to the hotel to take a dip in the pool.

My DH & DS enjoying some pool time. You can see the Jax Plaza in the background.

Up Next: Jax Day 2 - We're off to the Zoo.

Won’t bore you with all the zoo details. A good time was had by all here.

One thing to note – If you’re in Jax for more than a day, rent a car. I’m sure you can rent a car from Hotwire for $20/day & get around to where you need to be & it will be more affordable than using a taxi service.

Base fares for taxis are $22.50, add $5 for a car seat/tip & it was a $35 each way trip to the zoo for us. $70 for a 30 minute drive. Yeah. Rent a car.

It was hot, hot, hot this day. Have plenty of sunscreen & a hat with you. The zoo was very nice, we rode the train, did the Dino exhibit, & left around 3pm.

One cool thing at the Jax Zoo, we fed the giraffes. It’s $2 per feeding & the come right up to you. Fun, my son loved this.

Also, there is a really nice splash park within the zoo.

Like to hear more lol by the way how was the food in the lunch buffet? Did they have any meat carvings and soups they didn't have any when I took her last year hoping it got better. What type of shows did they show, do tell more love the photos too!

After the zoo, we head back to the hotel & take another dip in pool to combat the heat. My little guy is beat, he takes a nap in the shade while we have the pool to ourselves.

Here we are, enjoying the pool & testing out the waterproof cam.

The kiddo wakes up, and joins us for a dip.

Afterwards, we take advantage of the hotel shuttle & head out for dinner.

Next: Embarkation!

Cute little boy! ;)

Thanks!

We didn't hit up too many shows. We did see Hey, Mambo, which was pretty good.

The buffet did have meat carvings every day & soups. The carvings were outside by the grill, where the burgers are, next to he Mongolian Grill.

We ate at the buffet everyday, never went to the MDR for lunch, and everything was okay, not great, except French Cuisine day which wasn't good at all.

Monday: 4/11 - Embarkation day! YAY!

We booked the cruise special with the Hyatt which included to/from transportation to the port. We were picked up promptly in a van that we shared with a couple other couples/families. It was a little cramped since some luggage was in the front seat & everyone squished together but we made do.

Ready to go!

232323232%7Ffp53399%3Enu%3D3236%3E63%3B%3E639%3EWSNRCG%3D363%3A7398%3B8325nu0mrj

One thing - You need to have your Carnival paperwork & ID out when you board your cruise transport. They ask for this when entering the port. Thankfully, our diver was able to get us by since some of the people in the van had theirs in their luggage.

First sighting

We arrived around 11am to the port & the crowd was a bit large. Our total embarkation time was about 45 minutes. The port personnel were very friendly & had us through as soon as they could. I can only compare it to our embark in San Juan, which was EXTREMELY quick, we were on board in about 10-15 minutes.

First order of business - Ice Cream!

232323232%7Ffp5338%3A%3Enu%3D3236%3E63%3B%3E639%3EWSNRCG%3D363%3A759238325nu0mrj

Great they brought back the soup and carvings thank you.

How much is beer now I heard carnival raised up its prices in cocktails and beer since my last cruise, in fact, we cruised RC after Carnival last year and found RC prices less costly lol

Enjoying your review your son is a handsome boy!

Once on board, rooms aren't ready until 1:30pm. We explored the ship, there were some people who came on in their bathing suits & were already at the pool (smart!). We spotted some dolphins playing in the river & spent some time just watching the swim/jump by.

We head to Camp Carnival & register the little guy. Very easy to do, fill out paperwork beforehand & turn in at Camp.

Hhmmm, what should I play with first?

232323232%7Ffp53389%3Enu%3D3236%3E63%3B%3E639%3EWSNRCG%3D363%3A759%3A69325nu0mrj

Pretty soon, the announcement states rooms are ready. Since I'm paying for this trip completely, I went with the most affordable option, an interior room.

We're down on the Riviera deck, midship.

Nothing special, but it's home for the next 5 days.

The room was fine, but the bathroom was a bit smelly. The sewer smell was pretty strong in there so we just kept the door closed.

There is plenty of room, we had a stroller that we kept open in the room the entire time & we had no problems, room wise.

My DH is the beer drinker so I hardly paid attention but I believe Coronas were in the $6 range & a bucket of Dos Equis was $19.

Thanks, I think he's adorable but .. you know, bias & all that. :D

Thanks for the review. We loved sailing on the Fascination, we are sailing on her again in November, going to HMC and Nassau. We went to Key West last time and had a wonderful day wandering around, seeing the sights. It would be different taking a little one so your review is quite interesting. Keep it coming!

Wow they really went up in price...for that beer $6.00! a six pack in the store for corona averages here at $10.25! Do you realize the bulk they purchase and the actual cost to Carnival, thats pure rip off I say but they know they got you. I now understand why people want to smuggle in their liquor!! I could only imagine how much a long island iced tea is now.

Did they offer anything after 11pm besides burgers, fries, hot dogs and pizza, any caesar salad cheese yet? lol I can't eat gluten so hoping they have something non gluten such as chicken breast or salad to munch on after hours.

Watching dolphins

Safety drill was called right before sail away. It was fine until we head outside in the hot, hot, hot weather & were trapped there for some time. A hot, cranky 2 year old is not good company for safety drills.

After the drill, we stay outside to watch the ship sail under the Dames Point Bridge.

We clear it by approx. 5 feet, I believe that's what they stated.

Back to the room for a quick nap before dinner.

We chose early dining because of the little one.

For anyone on this sailing that was in the dining room with us, I'm sorry.

DS did not like being restricted & had a fit.

Dinner tonight was very good.

I had the Fried Shrimp appetizer, DH had the Smoked Duck Breast appetizer, the Baby Back Ribs, and the chocolate & bing cherries cake. Delicious. The Rib meat just fell off the bones.

Like I said, I think it was in that range, not quite sure. Towards the end, my DH would just order the bucket o' beer since it was more affordable.

The only time we ate late, we had sandwiches from the deli but I don't remember the time. My DH was the one who trekked upstairs (we couldn't order RS since the phone in our cabin wasn't working) so I have no idea on what they offer.

We're not ready to sleep so we head to Camp Carnival intending on staying with DS so he can play with toys there. Well, CC opened at 8pm & was taking kids until 10pm. We drop the little one off & wander the ship, grab a drink.

We're up fairly early, head up to Lido for breakfast. There's the usual BF foods, eggs, tater tots, bacon (there was bacon police but you just have to ask for a bit more & they concede), etc.

Afterwards, we drop the little one off at CC & head to the hot tub & pool.

Ahhhh, relaxation.

We pick up the kiddo before lunch, have lunch, head back to the room for a nap & get ready for elegant night.

I have to say this. When I began packing for this trip, I told my DH to pack appropriately. I did not supervise his packing & what a mistake that was. For EN, my DH packed jeans. Yes, jeans.

We even went to the stores together to find a nice outfit for my son, yet he still packed jeans for himself.

So, for all of the people offended at EN attendees not wearing what they should, I apologize but I had no control over him.

We head out to the Promenade to have some pictures taken.

I bought only 2, which hid my hubby's jeans.

2 orders, our waiter, Coco, put them on same plate. This was new for us since on our previous cruise, we were told we had to have 2 separate plates.

Our waiters, Coco & Nyoman, were excellent. They were great with DS. Coco told us & showed us pictures of his twin boys who were back home. Adorable. He was cutting his contract short, as well as his wife, who worked in the other DR, to head back home to take care of them.

They would bring DS food out very quickly & even entertain him with napkin animals.

Wanted to add that we did bring a bottle of wine with us to dinner this night & weren't charged the corkage fee. Granted, it was a cheap twist off bottle of Moscato, but no charge.

We change & head out to explore the ship.

We saw some Karaoke in the Passage to India Lounge

Can't trust a man to pack the right things, can you? ;)

Not at all!

We had a little spat but then decided not to let it ruin our vacation.

Thankfully, not that it's right, but he wasn't the only one in jeans.

Before hopping back on the trolley, the boys try Key Lime Pie on a stick & dipped in chocolate. I'm not a fan of KL but they loved it. At $5 a pop, they should!

Back on the trolley, and off to Higgs Beach. The trolley stop leaves you a bit off from the beach, you have to walk about 5 minutes, I'd say.

Chicken sighting

Higgs Beach - Not a good beach. Granted, you shouldn't go to Key West expecting great beaches but this was not good.

It smelled .. badly. Enough that it drove us away.

Little guy splashed around a little bit, then we headed off to the SMP.

There are bathrooms & showers provided.

232323232%7Ffp53399%3Enu%3D3236%3E63%3B%3E639%3EWSNRCG%3D363%3A77%3A%3A76325nu0mrj

Waiting for trolley. I think this is where we waited the most, maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

232323232%7Ffp53486%3Enu%3D3236%3E63%3B%3E639%3EWSNRCG%3D363%3A77%3B%3A88325nu0mrj

The trolley stop for the SMP is right in front of the Butterfly Conservatory.

You walk a little bit to get to the SMP, walking past the Southernmost House. We take our picture & head back to the trolley stop where there's a trolley waiting for us. Were going to shop but it's hot so we just head back to the ship.

DS heads off to CC for a little bit & we go to the pool.

We feel bad that we haven't included the little guy in pool time so we pick him up from CC & head over to the Splash area.

And, he hates the slide.

Instead, we splash around.

We start pulling away from KW, departure time is 3pm. It's still hot out so we decide to dip in the pool.

He absolutely loves it.

Back to the room for a shower & nap before dinner. Since DS refuses to stay at CC for dinner, we bring him along & he has a really bad fit at dinner this time. (Sorry!) Just too much going on for him so we head back to the room to calm him down. He ends up falling asleep shortly afterwards & even though it's the Past Guest Party we decide to stay in the room & not have another blowout. No food porn today!

Next up: Nassau, Bahamas.

Nassau

We don't pull in until noon so we head upstairs to watch us approach Nassau. It's a bit gloomy today & it starts to drizzle a little.

Running from the rain

As you can see, it's a bit foggy/gloomy

As soon as we're docked, it starts warming up. We're docked along 2 other ships.
