Question Which pier in San Juan for port call?

I know that RCCL and Celebrity use the Pan-American Pier in San Juan, Puerto Rico for cruises leaving and departing from San Juan. Do they also use this pier for port-of-call stops, or do they (hopefully) use the much more convenient Old Town piers?

We are stopping for a short port call on Navigator's 8-night Eastern run in November and are trying to decide whether to do something off the ship or just stay on board. If we dock "in town" we'll probably get off, if Pan-American.. might be a nice time to stay on board!

Thanks!

I believe in Old San Juan. That is where Explorer docked.

Im not sure of the name of them but we left and arrived in the same port just on our cruise last week on RCL Serenade. WE used to port closest to the small airport right there. There was another RCL ship though on the other side closer to old San Juan and Near the sheraton and Senor Frogs, not sure if this helps out or not.

We were on the Explorer in June and when we docked in San Juan it was right in Old San Juan.

It's such a convenient place to dock and Old San Juan is just so beautiful that if I had to make a complaint it's that you're never docked long enough to do everything we want to do.

We have been to San Juan on Liberty and Explorer and on both occasions it has been Old San Juan opposite the Sheraton

I'm booked on the Serenade in Feb and booked the Sheraton Old Town for the night before. So we will or won't be near the ship? Sorry for my confusion.

No, the Serenade will be docked across the bay at the Pan Am pier...it's a short cab ride from Old San Juan...

If you are on a cruise that embarks from San Juan, you will be getting on the ship at the Pan Am pier, not the one in Old San Juan. If you are there for a port visit on a ship that came from another embarkation port, you will dock for the day in Old San Juan.

Wow, thanks for the quick response! Do you think it would be better to stay at the other Sheraton property (Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, 200 Convention Boulevard) or keep the reservation we have? I'm really just trying to stick with Sheraton properties to use points we have.

We're flying in the day before (arrive 4pm), would like to try and check in and drop off our bags at the pier the next day before heading back out to enjoy more of San Juan before the ship leaves. Thanks!

We stayed at the Sheraton in Old San Juan for 2 nights before our cruise on Adventure in January. It was nice to be able to walk around Old San Juan in the evening. The cab fare was not bad for the 5 of us with many pieces of luggage to get to the Pan Am pier. We arrived at the pier about 12:30 pm and were on the ship within 30 minutes. There was a lot of traffic in the pier are as 2 RCCL ships were embarking as well as a Princess one right across from the Pan Am pier (I guess they use that area when there are 3 ships embarking on the same day). I don't know how difficult it will be to get a cab back into OLd San Juan. There were plenty of cabs at the pier, but the traffic following disembarkation was a mess around 11 am the following Sunday.

Awesome, this is really helpful. Maybe we'll just try and leave our bags with the hotel a few hours after checkout and stay in Old Town before heading over to the pier.

Keep the hotel you have. The Sheraton Old San Juan is a nice hotel. There is really not much to do at the one near the pier. Old San Juan is a great place to visit. There is a lot of history there. The streets a very safe to walk, even at night. There are many great restaurants near your hotel. The cab ride to the pier is only about 10 minutes and $20. Check out time at the Sheraton Old San Juan is 10:00 but they have a storage room off the lobby and they will store your luggage for you if you want to spend some time wandering around Old San Juan before heading over to the ship.

I've got the Sheraton OSJ booked for a post-cruise stay in February. My confirmation says check out time is 11 AM not 10 AM. Hopefully they have not changed the check out time. I booked the room in June. Check in time says 3 PM. I asked them whether we could drop our luggage off when we left the ship and wander around OSJ until check in time. I was told that they have a storage area for luggage and it wouldn't be a problem.

Just know that you have to be onboard the ship by 5 or 6pm (not sure of the times for Adventure and Serenade) for the Muster Drill. I think we had it at 5:30pm on Adventure in April.

I have read on cruise critic that the muster drill on Serenade is at 8:00 pm and that second seating dinner on the first night isn't until 8:45. Adventure did have it earlier, so check and see what time it is on Serenade and what time you need to be on the ship.
