Our FIRST Cruise! Carnival Fantasy 8/13/2011-8/20/2011 Review & Pics

Hi all! Just off our very first cruise & thought I'd write a review on our AWESOME experience! We took the 7 day cruise on the Fantasy from Charleston with stops in Nassau , Half Moon Cay , & Grand Turk.

First off it was myself (Autumn - hi!) , my husband Jordan , & his parents. We chose the Charleston port because of how close it was to Charlotte (home) - not to mention Charleston is beautiful & I was hoping to be able to go early and be able to explore a bit. Didn't happen. But oh well some other time!

DSC01242.jpg

^^ This is us! Again - hi!

Our trip to Charleston wasn't bad at all. We ran into some HEAVY traffic just a few miles from where we needed to be but managed to wiggle through. Finding the port was no problem - making our way to it through all the twists and turns and cops standing in the road directing traffic? That was the worst part but it didn't take long! We pulled in - paid for parking - went through to drop off our luggage - went back to park - and went into the area for S&S cards , embarkation photos , etc. I have no pictures from this. And to be quite honest you probably wouldn't wanna see pictures of people in lines anyways! This whole process took about an hour which I didn't think was bad. The lines moved very quickly (there were 2 lines). Embarkation ,to me, was simple. There was always someone around to help you along and let you know to have out your photo ID & boarding passes or to answer any questions you had. After the S&S cards were distributed it was time for our embarkation photo (I thought ours turned out great. We should've bought it!) - and time to board the ship. Around this time I was spasming with joy and giggling like a little girl!

Our cabin was on Empress deck which actually was the deck that we entered the ship on so after some quick directions we went to find our cabins. They were E-136 & E-148. Ocean view. I'm sure everyone's familiar with what the cabins look like so there's really not much to tell. however here's a picture of mine & Jordan's cabin anyways :::

DSC01222.jpg

Thankfully E deck was not as crazy loud as I was expecting! Kids ,of course, ran around during the days but night time was VERY quiet (I slept like the dead on that ship!)

Now. On to exploring the ship. We went walking around the Grand Spectrum area & on up around Water Works & the walking track. Me & Jordan went to Serenity deck and stayed for a little bit ::

DSC01267.jpg

^^ I love Serenity deck. Clearly.

We went to the buffet on lido deck for lunch. Well - so did everyone else! It was INSANE. I think we all had a slice of pizza that day because that was the quickest thing to grab. Thankfully the buffet was not this busy every single day. After lunch & a little more walking we went back to see if our luggage had made it back , it had not but my in-laws had. Jordan got his bag at 3 maybe 4. Mine didn't show up til right before dinner at 6! We also met our cabin steward Dwi. I loved Dwi! He was so sweet! PIcture of Dwi in later post!

A little more about the ship from my point of view - I read somewhere about it having a strange smell , having trays from room service being left in the halls , etc etc. Basically just being dirty. I found the ship very clean! There WAS the occasional tray in the halls but they were always promptly picked up. We saw people cleaning , dusting , etc constantly. No problem at all with cleanliness! With this ship being the oldest in the fleet it showed no real age or wear-n-tear. The decor on the ship was obviously the HEIGHT of 90's chic though! Lots of neon as my husband said...

DSC01268.jpg

^^ Flashy!!

Dinner that first night was great! As it always was! We had early dining in the Celebration dining room. I loved our Maitre'D & wait staff. The food in the MDR was usually always delicious (with the highlight for me ALWAYS being dessert!!). I believe the first night I had Chicken A'La Greque. It was wonderful. No food pictures though! I should've taken some. I think I have one of the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake though. That cake was like sin in a dish. Amazing. Anyways - no food pictures for fear of annoying everyone at neighboring tables with my flash going off! However I assure you - the food was very good!

DSC01261.jpg

^^ Yep. I found it - there's the warm chocolate melting cake.

After dinner it was more exploring and eventually back to the cabin to get ready for bed. && I had my first towel critter & Fun Times waiting :::

DSC01277.jpg

^^ Aw.

Days 2 (at sea & elegant night) & day 3 (Nassau) coming up next...

Your review is fun to read, and I can feel the excitement of your first cruise. I went with a group of first timers out of Charleston on the Fantasy last fall, and it seems you are as excited as they were. I can't wait for the next installment.

Day 2 at sea was a little more active!

Woke up - breakfast in the MDR. Ham & cheese omelet. Most of the day was spent ,yet again, exploring the ship.

My favorite thing about today? Is when I noticed first thing that the ocean water went from that murky gray water of Charleston to the most gorgeous royal blue I'd ever seen :::

DSC01279.jpg

We all went to the front of the ship and while Jordan & my father in law jabbered on about whatever - my mother in law & I stood off to the side watching random little fish jump out of the water. Seriously. It's the simple things ya'll!

Lunch was in the buffet (as much as we loved the MDR we didn't eat lunch there all week!) - and today's theme was Caribbean food. The Jamaican curried chicken was BY FAR my favorite thing I tried that day. Aside from the Key Lime Pie on the dessert buffet. Omg. Good stuff!!

My father in law's birthday was Monday the 15th so Jordan & I snuck off to Formalities and ordered him a birthday cake. We had it set to deliver at 1 PM the next day...we weren't remembering the fact that at 1 PM the next day was our first port stop in Nassau and we wouldn't be there. Never even occured to us. Thankfully it still got delivered to the room just fine by their steward. Just a little FYI - Formalities cakes are delicious! We had chocolate cake with chocolate cream filling.

^^ Burton (my father in law) 's birthday cake.

Jordan & I went to water works & eventually just grabbed 2 chairs and relaxed as we sailed. I realized after about 20 minutes of absolute quiet that Jordan had went from this ::::

To this ::::

DSC01291.jpg

^^^ Hahahaha. He would kill me if he knew I posted this but it cracks me up everytime! It really is THAT relaxing.

Dinner that night was our first elegant night! Dinner as always was delicious and tonight we got our first dinner show from the wait staff. May I say that they all are just so adorable?!?!?! Our Maitre'D introduced the song they sang as a traditional Italian song only sang in English and it turned out to be "That's Amore'". Cute!

DSC01298.jpg

^^ My man & I on elegant night

DSC01304.jpg

^^ All of us with Vasile' our Maitre'D. He never failed to crack me up. Awesome!

After dinner was a show...

The Nightclub Express show in the Universe Lounge. I HAD to go to this show!! Mainly because the main male singer Kevin Jayroe is a dear friend's brother from back in Charlotte. He'd messaged me on Facebook & told me to make sure I go check his brother's show out so there was no way of passing this up! The show was great! Basic cruise ship entertainment but fun all the same! It was a whole big series of past nightclub hits from all the famous clubs (Crazy Horse , Studio 54 , etc). Definite fun especially when the "Village People" came out and had everyone YMCA with them!

Continued from above ::

DSC01306.jpg

^^ Myself , my husband , & my mother in law Vicki at the Nightclub Express show.

That night after the show we made it back to lido so I could have a late night ice cream cone (I was on VACATION is my defense on that...!) & went down to serenity to just talk. After an hour or so of that it was back to the cabin so I could freak out over my newest towel critter.

Bright & early the next morning I open the curtains to see that we're at Nassau , Bahamas. WOO HOO!!!

Random note but the first thing I really noticed out of our windows was the big yellow building that was a Bahamian masonic lodge (both my husband and my father in law are masons) so that was a pretty cool thing to see first!

I couldn't have got off the ship any faster but I still went and ate breakfast. Eggs benedict in the MDR. One of my favorite things I ate on the ship!! SO GOOD! After eating we ventured out at Nassau!

...A few side notes about Nassau. Ok yeah it's the Bahamas and the beaches were fabulous and beautiful but to be frank Nassau wasn't my favorite at all. The people of Nassau were pushy and annoying (I'm aware that when they ask you 30 times if you want to rent a jet ski they're just doing their jobs but holy moly it sure does get old after a while). All the people at the shops will tell you anything to have you buy their stuff ("No sir there is no embargo on Cuban products you can take up to 5 Cuban cigars back to the U.S" --- uh it's a good thing we're not STUPID) and the women always want to braid your hair. Blah. Maybe I'm not just good with my people skills but they drove me crazy!

Anyways ,ok, we're off the ship. Walk through the Nassau welcome center-type place & just walk down the streets until we decide where we want to go. Well our strolling took us to Junkanoo beach only to realize absolutely no one was there & maybe we should've went to Paradise Island/Atlantis beaches. We turn around and start back - got a cab - and took the scariest cab ride of my life to the other side of town to Atlantis.

Our cab driver was drunk (we learned this once we were all seated and riding around & he laid a mostly empty bottle of liquir in the console of his van. Fabulous) & when my husband asked if drinking and driving was illegal here his reply was no. Again. Fabulous. He (cab driver) called my father in law "Daddy-O" & told him "Do not worry the air conditioning will kick on when we hit full speed!" - No. I'm not making this up! Nassau driving scared me to death. One traffic light (that I saw). No stop signs. Everyone honking (however I'm not sure if the honking is some kinda system they have set up). Our cab driver almost hit a child & then as he was attempting to play tour guide with us he swirved us through 3 lanes on a bridge close to Atlantis. Seriously guys - choose your cab drivers WISELY!!!! Thankfully on the way back we had a nice sober woman driver but she drove as terrifying as he did...

DSC01311.jpg

^^ Me & Jordo at the Bahamas. My sweet man has such a farmer's tan here! No judgement!

DSC01317.jpg

^^ Again!

DSC01321.jpg

^^ Senor Frogs

DSC01326.jpg

^^ Burton , Vicki , & myself in the water at outside of Atlantis.

DSC01332.jpg

^^ Me & my man. It look like we're up at the shore line here but actually the water on that beach got deep very quickly!

I was more than happy to frolick on the beach all day but I eventually got out (I adore the water) & got dressed & snapped a few pictures. We grabbed a cab - my in laws went back to the ship for lunch - & Jordan & I walked around town and checked out some shops. Most all of the shops sold the same stuff & I'm not one for souveniers at all. I did think of buying a straw fan though. We went to quite a few places & down another road to where Cartier (which I can't afford) & Gucci (same) were. Looked at a few shops there , checked out the Tortuga rum cake shop (sampled banana rum cake! not bad!) & eventually gave up on finding good souveniers & headed back to the ship.

At this point I was exhausted. I swam & played on that beach for hours (Jordan says I'm like a kid...) and was just beat. Went to lido - got some fruit as my lunch & headed to the cabin for a nap. Ok I napped. Jordan wandered around the ship alone...I'm not sure where Burton & Vicki went to but I assume they slept too. We were wore out!

Dinner in the MDR of course. Delicous food of course. The show was hilarious that night because the waiters and waitresses grabbed people to dance with them & my mother in law got picked to dance! They danced to the song "Low" by Flo-Rida & T-Pain which was funny enough on its own!!

Went to a comedy show that night after dinner - Joe Bronzi. He was quite funny really! And lido again to talk and relax afterwards for a while.

...More to come!

Love your review, it has really lighten my heart. I have been on the Fantasy twice and will sail her again 9/10. You review has really got me excited as if I weren't already excited enought. I can't wait to hear more.

I'm so glad ya'll are enjoying the review! We had a wonderful time & can't wait to cruise again.

...Ready for more?!

Ok. After Nassau was Half Moon Cay. The most beautiful little island in the world...If it wasn't private/Carnival owned I would be begging and pleading for Jordan to find us a chunk of land there for a little beach house.

We wanted to rent a cabana on HMC but didn't realize how far in advance that it needed to be booked because they were loooong gone! There were still plenty of chairs & "clam shells" or whatever they're called. I loved Half Moon Cay. Loved. LOVED!

We got up , ate breakfast of course , and headed out to get on a tender boat to take us to the island.

One complaint - we're all going to the same place people!! You don't have to trample all over everyone to make sure you got on the tender. Grrrrr. Also - an announcement was made saying DO NOT take the elevator down to get off the boat - take the stairs. That way there is only one line to be in. No. A whole horse load of people come parading out of the elevators and try to cram themselves in line with people who were already there (and well in front of them!). Seriously though - we're all going to the same place & everyone will eventually get there so play fair & follow the rules.

Now that my mini rant is over this is us on the tender boat (except my father-in-law who if he is not IN the picture then he's obviously taking them!) :::

cruise2011040.jpg

Once getting there we followed the paths til we found a nice not-so-busy (but still kinda busy) spot on the beach. THIS is more like it!! NO ONE asking if we wanted jet skis. NO ONE asking if we want to ride on a banana boat. NO ONE trying to sell us bottled water.

cruise2011047.jpg

^^ Vicki & I at the HMC sign.

DSC01366.jpg

^^ & again at the conch shell fountain

DSC01371.jpg

^^ The cool sign that let me know how far NYC was from HMC.

DSC01377.jpg

^^ Bahamian church.

& now it was time for me to go play in the water. There was a bar or something shaped like a pirate ship that kept playing good music so I was dancing around in the water as well. No shame!

DSC01385.jpg

^^ So clear. Flawless.

Fast forward hours of me in the water - I finally decide to eat. Carnival had a big beach BBQ on the island for lunch that day so Jordan & I went to that to eat while Burton & Vicki ate back on the ship when we went back. They had typical cook out food but it was still yummy. I had some potato salad , broccoli salad , a hot dog , and some pineapple. Another side note ... I watched a little girl pick up and squeeze each peice of pineapple before she finally chose one. Thankfully one of the staff brought out a whole new tray (which is where I got my pineapple) & tossed the one she had been into. I don't mean to be rude because she was very young & shouldn't be making her own plate anyways but that was disgusting. Just slipping that little bit of info out there to make sure you check out the buffet lines...

Welllll...anyways. We go catch a tender to go back to the ship & ,what else?, went wondering around. After a bit it was time to shower & get cleaned up for dinner. No show tonight! Booo!

After dinner though Jordan & I went to Universe Lounge for games. We ended up staying through 3 games & watching a hip hop dance class with the "Fun Force"...Gender showdown was fun! I didn't know the answers to anything for the girls but I knew them all for boys (which was the point!). I wanted to stay up and go to the Showcase of the Stars talent show thing but I'm a wuss and fell asleep...

Next up - Grand Turk! Our last port of call. My spa day. Last formal night.

Our last port of call was at Grand Turk. I didn't know too much about Grand Turk & had heard nothing too great about it so I took advantage of the port day spa specials & booked a spa appointment for that day.

We didn't get to Grand Turk til noon and my appointment was at 3 so we didn't stay out long at all here. It turned out to be GORGEOUS in Grand Turk!

Point in case ::::

DSC01489.jpg

We pulled up next the Carnival Pride ::

DSC01449.jpg

DSC01484.jpg

We did however figure out that Grand Turk had the best shopping by far so I managed to pick up some souveniers finally! We walked the beach (but we didn't get in) & we hit up the big pool (but didn't get in here either) - and we checked out the space exhibit thing they had out (ok, Jordan did. I didn't read anything about it.) basically Grand Turk was our exploration day. We stayed here only 2 1/2 hours & headed back in. My in laws didn't get out to Grand Turk til about 2 or 2:30 that day but I believe they spent the day the same way we did! I still enjoyed it though because the water here was spectacular. Just beautiful.

Space thing ::

DSC01475.jpg

DSC01476.jpg

At 3 I headed to Spa Carnival for my appointment. I whined about wanting a massage the entire time we were on the ship because Carnival credited us 80 extra dollars that we needed to use (and I knew I was more apt to use it than Jordan for sure. I can always find something to spend money on haha) Everytime I whined all Jordan said was "Well schedule one!" - so I did. I booked the Spa-Topia package. A facial & all kindsa massages including a back massage with hot stones. Yes please. I spent about an hour & a half at the spa - it was great.

Jordan took pictures while I was gone :::

DSC01498.jpg

^^ The Pride pulling away from us.

Dinner tonight was cruise casual again. Also tonight was the night I tried my other favorite dessert - Bitter & Blanc. So so so good! Tonight's show the wait staff sang "Hey Baby" & once again recruited people to dance. I didn't get picked this time either. They must've sensed I have no rhythm & probably shouldn't be up dancing!! Also there was a guy walking around the tables doing magic tricks which was cute.

That night consisted of more time at Serenity deck & a comedy show - and a VERY VERY short trip to the casino. Neither of us are gamblers yet I felt the need to waste a few dollars on the slots only so I could say that I "gambled". Waste being the key word in that sentence. Back to the cabin & off to sleep. No more ports of call! We're now on our way back to stupid ol' home.

I don't read a lot of reviews if I'm not planning to cruise a particular ship, but I'm so glad I chose to read yours! It's always fun to hear from a first-time cruiser, as it makes me remember the things I loved most about my first cruise. (Okay...the things I love about every cruise!) :)

Great pictures! You two are a cute couple and it's obvious you had a super time!

Ok - this is where my writing turns sad. We're on our way home. Booooo home. We have 2 days at sea now! Thursday I woke up feeling pretty crappy. Kind of felt like I was getting a head cold & had an achy stomach all day long. Allllllll day long. All I wanted to do was sleep and the idea of food turned me off completely (which sucks because I love food & wanted to try everything - in return is what caused my stomach to be off until about 3 days after I got off the ship!!) so it was a very light breakfast - even lighter lunch - and went to watch some shows.

Our shows today was the future cruise seminar (ok not really a show but we still went because now we're HOOKED!) -- a comedy show with the new comedians -- and the thing I wanted to go to - the game of love/newlywed style game.

Thursday was actually pretty boring because ,really, ALL I wanted to do was sleep. I had a cold chill I couldn't shake & was just blegh so I went to the cabin , took a hot shower , let Jordan go do his thing , and I fell asleep while watching "Rango"...

Yet I went to dinner that night anyways because they were serving the grand marnier souffle for dessert & I REALLY wanted it! And I had it! And it was delicious. It was the ONE thing I ordered that night that I ate in full. I felt so bad for wasting...Dinner's show that night was a conga line that ,yet again, I did NOT get picked to dance it! Actually I was in no mood or condition to dance that night anyways so it didn't bother me too much...

This is one of the few pictures taken that day - right after dinner - we went to the cabin - I loved my towel critter so I took a pic with him and slept from 7:30 that night to 9 the next morning.

DSC01511.jpg

Seriously - I felt rough. After about 14 hrs of sleep , motrin , and some sudafed I felt like a million bucks. Well. Compared to the day before.

Friday morning was a fruit from room service kinda morning since I overslept & still didn't want to eat much. Afterwards I finally got ready & we went to buy our photos from the gallery that we wanted. Debarkation talk at 11. After a while of doing...whatever (It couldn't have been too important because I don't remember!) it was lunch on the buffet. They had a big chocolate buffet that I really wanted to hit up but stayed too busy however I did have this wonderful chocolate dipped banana on a stick that rocked.

At lunch my mother in law asked me about 5 times if we'd been back to our cabin yet - we had not - when we finally DID get back to our cabin we had this waiting for us. They are sneaky! :::

DSC01534.jpg

^^We're cute!!!

And later she asked me AGAIN if we'd been back only to see THIS had been delivered as well (I should've known something else was there when she asked me again hours later!!!) :::

DSC01512.jpg

On a side note - Jordan & I celebrate our first wedding anniversary on the 30th!! We didn't plan the cruise as anything for the anniversary (it was a family vacation) but ya know. We didn't mind it!

Dinner was bittersweet. The final show was the wait staff singing a farewell song - kinda like "leavin' on a jet plane" only "leavin' on a funship" - I'm corny...but I liked it!

DSC01522.jpg

^^ Waving bye during their song. Aw.

Once again all throughout dinner my sneaky in laws asked me (after seeing someone get sang "Happy Birthday" to) what my oppinion on singing at dinner time is & how I would react. Well 15 minutes later during dessert there come our wait staff with a piece of cheesecake with a candle in it singing "Happy Anniversary" to me & Jordan. During this I think I laughed harder than I ever have. Again - I'm corny. The waiter kept telling us to kiss (in his accent it sounded like "kees!!") and I got tickled and couldn't help from giggling which turned into crazy laughter. I'm probably really embarrassing hahaha

Us & the wait staff ::

DSC01520.jpg

cruise2011118.jpg

That night our last show we went to was to see my pal from Charlotte's brother Kevin singing in the Beatles tribute show. I liked it too! Bravo Kevin bravo! I couldn't wait to be able to use my cell phone again to text my friend to let him know I DID get to see the shows he put on!

After the show we kinda wondered around - the ship was pretty dead. The pool was already drained (way to kill the mood there Carnival!) & ,yeah, vacation was pretty much over. I randomly woke up at about 5 AM and could see lights from Charleston & uggh it was depressing. It was a fabulous vacation & Jordan has already got to looking at cruises for January or even this December. Maybe not from Charleston - he's branching out!! haha We loved it. We don't know if Burton & Vicki will join us on the next one however they bought 2 (yes 2!) future cruise certificates on board so this will not be their last cruise either. Needless to say we're all HOOKED.

My last little set of pictures (we took about 300...on my camera alone...) :::

This is my father-in-law at the Grand Spectrum piano. He stopped Henry the guy who plays it and asked if he could have his picture taken ... Henry didn't mind. This ,I believe, is the ONE photo that Burton was DETERMINED to make sure he had before we left...

I did not. But it would've been nice of them to do that!!

Thanks for the picture of the blue water. In my book one of the best pictures ever posted on these boards. Reminds me why I really love to cruise.
