"A major rescue operation is under way after a cruise ship carrying 4,000 passengers ran aground off the coast of Italy.
The Costa Concordia left port this evening for a seven-day Mediterranean cruise but after two hours of leaving it ground to a halt in the sea with a major electrical fault.
Coastguards were immediately dispatched near the island of Giglio, off the Tuscan coast, as passengers were ordered to put on live vests and man life boats as the ship began to list heavily to one side."

I was just perusing the boards as my husband and I gifted our mothers with a cruise on Concordia for Christmas....they flew into Milan today and are supposed to sail out of Savona tomorrow....obviously that will not happen.
How terrible for those that were onboard!...and those whose vacations are now not going to happen. Sounds like no one was injured so that is a blessing.
And this is just another example of why trip insurance is so important!

Very sorry for the people onboard. Hope everyone gets safely off the ship.
How does a ship this size suddenly start to sink??
It would have to hit something to breach the hull. It wouldn't just randomly happen. Whatever happened is all speculation at this point. If power went out and they lost control they could've drifted into something that tore into the hull. Otherwise they hit something and the water coming in caused the failure.
