Angry Birds vs The Red Frog and a Blue Iguana... A Liberty Review 12/17/2011

It's been nearly three months since this cruise, and thanks to someone bumping the last review at the right time I am inspired. It's unfortunate that this review will be incomplete because I became ill on this cruise and missed two ports and just felt generally sluggish the entire last half of the cruise. Because of that, this was probably our worst cruise ever.... not the fault of the Liberty of course!!!

So if you read the last review you already know that we drive to the port.... This time Angry Bird was able to bring a friend and they were soooo annoying together.... but the excitement was ON even in the car ride!!!

PICT0707.jpg

Ok.. so I know they look pissy... but whats new... LOL

This cruise we were not VIP :( boo hoo... so we got to the port of Miami and did the check in on the screen, which was VERY VERY easy, and sat down. THANK GOODNESS I read these boards because I realized that we didn't have a boarding number and others around us did! First I went off to find one... it was only 10:45 and I was told that maybe they were all gone? DH and I didn't buy it so he went off on a further trip and came back with boarding number 5... dang.. we'd have been waiting there forever if we hadn't gotten that!

Of course we went straight to the Lido deck and WOW WOW WOW... we were sooooo impressed with the 2.0 upgrades.. the Rum Bar and Tequila Bar were BEAUTIFUL and fit very well where they were put! You will see pictures later in this review.... we were too busy eating our wonderful GUY FIERI BURGERS to take pics right then....

ok... DH got a burger... the birds got a burrito...

PICT0710.jpg

A word... the Guys burgers were excellent, greasy, and I really loved the chipolte/ranch mix they had on the condiment bar... but those things went right through me. My tummy was gurgling all around town when I ate one so I stayed away and spent a lot of time on the burritos, which were sooooo yummy... everyone should try a breakfast burrito.. I ended up having one nearly every morning on the cruise.. soooooooooooooooo good!

After we ate we relaxed (on the Guy Fieri side) then we relaxed for a bit and decided to head down to the lobby and watch people walk in...

PICT0713.jpg

In the lobby they have a DJ now and we really liked that. It got the vacation off to a fun start as we walked in! Here's a pic of the birds chillin in the lobby... I couldn't get them to dance for the camera... losers...

PICT0714.jpg

I did get DH to take a pic with me... he's so cute...

At 1:30 we went up to our cabin. We were in 8228, port side balcony, forward. It was our first time in a normal balcony instead of a suite. It was better then I thought it would be, but I really hated the bottle neck the closets/bathroom door/cabin door causes. The balcony size difference wasn't that bad and we really enjoyed the cabin in the end. THANK GOODNESS WE HAD A BALCONY... read on further about that....

When we got to the cabin the birds chilled on the balcony and then took a nap....

PICT0723.jpg

PICT0738.jpg

If I'm being honest... we all took a nap... totally missed our pre muster drill roll call meet and greet. I love Carnival's bedding though.... sooooo comfy!!!!!

After Muster DH and I hustled up to the Serenity deck for sail away.... we did this birdless because they were still sleeping... THEY SKIPPED MUSTER DRILL! I didn't report them but after the Concordia accident I'm sure they will never do THAT again!

This is the first time we've sailed on a ship with the serenity deck and I LOVED IT! Here is me without the crabby birds enjoying the peace before sail away...

and DH watching the Destiny (aka future Sunshine) sailing by!

I messed up bad... I didn't take my camera with me on the first night of the cruise to the welcome aboard show and I will ALWAYS regret that!!!!!!!! Having NOTHING to do with the birds...

Butch was our cruise director, and can I say he's the best we've had so far... so fun! He called Larry up on stage during the welcome aboard show and made him dance... omg... HE IS NOT A DANCER!!!! LMAO! I have never laughed so hard in all my life...

We didn't take a lot of pics during the first day at sea either :( I thought I had more time.... But the first day at sea was the captains night so we got a pic with the captain and the husband with Butch... who remembered his name and supposedly referred to Larry many times during the cruise according to other guests...

The stupid birds are so pissed at me because they really haven't been featured yet so we are moving on to ports of call! The birds were EXCITED (as much as they could be) about Coz because we were going to Nachi Cocum....

The Yellow bird was particularly excited about the open bar and pool, and the red bird just wanted to curl up under the palapa and pass out!

We got to Nachi and were assigned the very first palapa on the right side of the beach entrance, and the birds settled right in....

PICT0745.jpg

It didn't take them long to give into their birdlike instincts and perch!

PICT0749.jpg

I think the red bird got annoyed with his friend because he drank a LOT.... I won't lie, after Belize (tomorrow) we started wondering about rehab or some sort of AA for the yellow bird....

PICT0751.jpg

PICT0752.jpg

Nachi Cocum was really really nice and we would go back again in a heartbeat... in the summer... It was unfortunate that the beach water was so cold and the pool water was FREEZING... because the air was so comfortable. We tried the pool and hot tub and just couldn't do it... both of them had to be in the 70's. BTW the hot tub is NOT a hot tub LOL. All in all though it was a nice day in paradise... no HMC but still beautiful...

I especcially enjoyed when Larry passed out...

OKay, so I rarely read Carnival reviews.....so I was scrolling through and saw the bird reference and since I read the first angry bird I thought this was a knock-off (just like those purses you buy at the Straw Market :D).

Imagine my pleasure when it was THE angry bird and his buddy!! OMG, I cannot wait until you're finished. I love to read the whole thing all at once (I'm impaitent and hate movie serials....)

Glad to see the birds back and chatting! WooHOO! :D

When we left Cozumel we got a few more pics we wanted to share...

Can you tell who the smart Amigo is???

PICT0776.jpg

PICT0778.jpg

We can't wait to go back...

PICT0773.jpg

Just adding...there was a family at the palapa next to us. The son was sick and laying on the chair the whole time. I really am wondering if that is where I got sick from....

The next day was BELIZE!!!! We had no plans in Belize at all.... nothing... we weren't even going to get off the ship, but that morning we chose to at least take the long tender right and go check out the port area. Last time we didn't get to look around because we did Xunantunich which took all day.

After looking around and purchasing some hot sauce DH wanted a Belikien... which is Belize beer. He really loved it on the last cruise and the birds (especcially the lush yellow bird) were interested in trying it! We went upstairs to Wet Willys and ordered...

This is where things got a little hairy and it was a bit of a wild time... This place is made for a wild time though...

It all started pretty good... Angry bird got a diet coke...

PICT0787.jpg

Lush Yellow bird got a beer...

PICT0788.jpg

It was all downhill after that...

PICT0790.jpg

PICT0794.jpg

PICT0793.jpg

I have to say... I have NEVER seen Angry Bird so darn ANGRY at his friend... This is how the port trip ended...

PICT0791.jpg

Needless to say we had to help the yellow bird back to the tender and he spent the rest of the day in bed....

We spent the rest of the day on the Serenity deck.... it was so peaceful and relaxing. We did some hot tub time and commandeered a big round chair which Larry immediately fell asleep in while I read... Enya was quietly playing and I don't think I've ever felt so relaxed in all my life. I highly recommend some quiet port time on the Serenity deck....

We also did the steakhouse that night.... another yummy luxury... I had surf and turf, lobster bisque, and escargot (another possible culprit to my sickness). The next two ports were Roatan and Grand Cayman and we had our dive gear and dives planned for both these ports (thank GOODNESS we did the Carnival excursions).

About 2 am that night I woke up with heartburn, and I never get heartburn. I got up and took some tums and went back to sleep. In the morning we woke up in Roatan. The waters were choppy and DH and I sat on the balcony and watched as the ship pulled in and backed up over and over again trying to get into port. I spent awhile wondering if we were even going to be able to dock. During this time I started not feeling right. It got worse and before I knew it I was in the bathroom sick and (TMI alert) revisiting my steakhouse meal. I thought maybe it was just weird seasickness so DH went on the dive by himself and I decided to stay back. I seriously thought I was going to be able to get up soon and explore around the ship myself, but after about an hour and a half I was calling the infirmary.

They asked if I could make it down there myself, to which I said no and thank goodness I did because I was getting sick the entire way down with the metal trashcan from the room in my lap while in the wheelchair. I felt AWFUL for the poor people that got off the elevator when I got on! (I met them later in the cruise and come to find out they are from the same area we are from!)

I will NEVER be able to say enough for the medical staff on that ship. I got better care then I think I would have shoreside. The nurses name was Reviele Doyle and she was AMAZING. I got a shot to cure the nausea and it didn't work so she gave me something that dissolves under the tongue. She was right there helping me, consoling me and was an angel on earth. They even did blood work to confirm that it wasn't anything worse... and gave me two bags with the IV for dehydration.

DH got back on the ship about 2 pm and when he did bells, whistles and alarms went off... he was escorted to the medical center and I think that was the last time I was sick when he came in the room.. poor guy. LOL I was sent to my cabin about 4 pm and quarantined for the next 24 hours. I had to eat from room service from a limited menu... so that night I had soup and the next day I tried to get a BLT and was declined FAST.... BOO HOO!!!! So I lived with some Jello and bananas.

I thank heaven that I had a balcony. I spent much of my day in Grand Cayman sitting on the balcony yearning for the shore. I would have gone mad in an inside room. MAD I TELL YOU!!!!! Poor DH went on shore (If I had I would have been stopped in my tracks by that handy alarm system) and got me some Pandora Charms for my bracelet and then went and surprised me with a Carnival Liberty teddy bear.

That afternoon I was called and let off my quarantine... The biggest reason I wrote most of this is because I had to say even for all the bad remarks about customer service Carnival was AMAZING about the entire thing. They refunded both of my dives, and Larrys dive in Grand Cayman. The medical care was free for GI stuff, (and can I say again, really excellent).

I have no idea how I got sick or what the heck happened.... it could have been that kid in Coz.. it could have been the escargot... I just don't know.

But DH did get to dive in Roatan and I'm so jealous because my favorite thing in the whole world are sea turtles....

Thanks! There is more to come for sure, but I fear that there is no way that this review is as good as the last....I didn't get enough pics for that and wasnt' in the mood so much the last few days when I could have went picture crazy! But coming up we will have more pics of the birds around the ship and with a crew member or two. I gotta wait for DH's camera to finish charging and will finish up then.....

Great review, I enjoy your "birdies"

So sorry to hear you were sick, glad Carnival treated you right.

JMO it was probably that kid in Cozumel, it does not sound like food poisoning to me....good reminder to not be afraid to "move away" from

people who are ill on cruises/shore excursions.

Enjoyed your Belize Pics...was that the "Wet Lizard" bar??

I don't know of a Wet Willies there ...(they do have a Wet Willie in South Beach I think)

Can you tell us more bout the Breakfast Burritos?? I will be on Glory in November after her 2.0 makeover so any info on the 2.0 stuff much appreciated thanks

LOL! Yeah, I do think it was the Wet Lizard... I have no idea how I came up with Wet Willies... LOL I was just in South Beach recently and had some frozen yumminess at a Wet Willies...

The breakfast burritos were choices of egg, hashbrowns, and other veggies/cheeses in a soft shell....kinda like the lunch burritos only eggs and breakfast meats instead of chicken or steak. They have a ton of choices at the blue iguana cantina of salsa and hot sauces... I found some really good chipolte hot sauce that was really great on it because it was just tasty and not hot.

As far as the 2.0 upgrades I'll have a couple pictures coming up once Larrys camera charges. We really liked the sports bar and will be sad to cruise without the upgrades in May.

ETA: I wasn't that close to the sick kid, and I had no real contact with him, I just remember him laying in the chair all day... but I agree. I'm ANAL about washing my hands several times a day so it was particularly sad for me I got sick....

This is the first review I have ever heard anything positive about the Infirmary. I am happy that they treated you so well especially when you felt so ill. I am always concerned about getting sick on a trip and since we are on the Liberty for our next cruise I know that I wont have to worry about that.

Sorry to hear that you got sick on this cruise. We absolutely enjoyed reading about the Birds' adventures in Cozumel - the same thing happened to our little elephant... every time we walked into a bar, he had a drink in his hand!

Can't wait to read the rest of your review!

LOVING your review! So sorry you were sick ! But a big thank you for sharing the details and NOT complaining that you were quarantined! As horrible as it was, the staff is required to and most people don't understand that. Good to know the staff in the infirmary is that good, just hope I don't need them! You have a great sense of humor and writing style! We leave on the Liberty in 5 days and I can't wait!

I love the Angry Birds reviews! This was a great idea the first time and it hasn't gotten worse for the second time. It's such a great idea. Can't wait to see more

Thanks to everyone...

I was on such a roll with the "Lush Yellow bird" story line and I got shut down by the sickness hard! LOL :) The husband is upstairs right now uploading the pics from his camera! So more pics are on the way...

Gail- I dislike when people complain about being quarantined and I totally understand it... I would hate to have gotten anyone else sick. I honestly wouldn't have had a very good time if I could have been out and about I was so internally sore. If it did somehow come from that kiddo near us I wish he was quarantined. I just wish I could have gotten that darn BLT when I wanted it! ;) lol

When I was finally released from my quarantine restrictions the birds had total cabin fever and BEGGED to explore the ship. We were still in Grand Cayman for a couple hours so the ship was fairly deserted and we had a nice day exploring.

Our first stop was the Lido deck! Yellow bird BEGGED for a drink in a cool bamboo cup....

The blue Iguana ticked the red bird off and he was all about the red frog... he pecked out the blue iguanas eye....

After getting all liquored up... there is only one way for birds to spend the afternoon.... a high stakes chess tournament...

DSC02294.jpg

and some sunbathing... no chair hogs here!

We finished our "quiet ship" time on the Serenity deck again... it was so nice...

The Serenity deck is what I'm looking forward the most on our upcoming southern cruise. I'm thinking in La Romana I'm just gonna totally veg up there while everyone else is off the ship.... I can't think of a time I've been more relaxed and totally at peace then up there...

the birds liked it too I guess... I can almost see a smile on their faces in that last pic...

One of the best new venues they put in was the EA sports bar. We had a great time in there.... They had some sports trivia that was pretty cool and you could ask for a controller and take your opponent on in Madden!

The birds just liked going in there and watching sports and scores...

Also new on the Promenade deck was the Cherry on Top... I had a craving for some gummy candy and got a little baggy of it here one night. But they have the coolest little candy dispensers you can fill up too and buy the dispenser...

DSC02310.jpg

To go with the sports bar theme the birds took a special trip to the library to read up on this sports star... ugh
