They are whinging that the smoke now drifts from the decks up to the balconies. They are whinging that the smoking is more concentrated in certain areas (well Duh - that didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that would happen).

If cruise lines tried to ban smoking altogether they would lose a significant number of potential customers (or repeat customers like myself). Smokers tend to be a group who spend more on other vices (drinks and gambling for instance) both of which are major profit centres for the cruise line.

This would require a significant hike in the base fare to cover this lost profit.

Radical non-smokers - be careful what you wish for...

Does Carnival usually have one smoking venue or night club?

when we were on carnival, I noticed most of the nightclubs were non smoking, but now that the smoking policy has changed on almost all cruise lines, I think all bars/clubs are now no smoking.

As the mother of several sons with allergies and allergy induced asthma, there should be non smoking cabins, period. We had a balcony that smelled terribly of smoke and cigar. NCL then bombed the room with air freshener - one of the worst things for allergy kids. Smokers choices shouldn't cause anyone harm. We don't smoke but I understand the right to choose. Having smoking and non smoking cabins would enable everyone to be happy.

Not sure when you cruised but all NCL cabins are now no-smoking as of Jan 1, so that shouldn't be an issue for you any longer.

I'm very surprised though at how you described how NCL dealt with a smoking smell in your cabin since I've never heard of them ever using air freshner. I've always heard they had a special machine to remove the smell

The perfumey smell surprised me too. It was a 12/10 cruise on the Pearl. We cruised 12/11 on the Spirit - loved the Western Caribbean btw - and I was tense until we were in the room to see if we had the stink. I have allergies but my boys' issues take it to a whole new level. I am happy to hear of the new rules but designating certain cabins as smoking/non would be ok too. I choose not to smoke but am not telling someone else they can't - unless we are in the cabin right after.

We were on Carnival (unfortunately) this past January and there were one or two smoking clubs. Lots of non-smoking slot machines and all the table were split 50-50, one roulette smoking one non..etc. I believe it was also starboard side outdoors where you could smoke but not the aft lido adult area pool.

I have only known the cruise lines to use industrial air ionizers not any type of freshener. We had a suite on HAL where the pervious passenger had dropped an entire bottle of perfume in the bathroom the day before we embarked..thought I was going to die. Industrial Ionizer to the rescue.

Question

I always get a balcony to breathe FRESH air . I use my balcony a lot just to breathe
Smoking on balconies should be a NO NO
DEsignated areas should be on to[p decks away from ALL cabins and indoors
If others can do it so could NCL
If someone lights up by mistake in the cabin then proceeds outsidewill they be fined as well???

I guess that gives you lots of other lines to choose from then if you don't like NCL's policies. It's called choice.

I called NCL to check about smoking policy regarding our Epic suite 16002. It has a "solarium" with three waist-height sliding windows. The solarium has three sets of sliders to each of the rooms, bedroom, living room and bath area.

Is it a balcony, or is it part of the stateroom?

One of us smokes.

It says in their writeup that this suite includes a "private" balcony.

Found this video for suite 16005. Should be the same. The solarium doesn't seem to offer that much ventilation. More apt to blow smoke back in than out. Especially on sea days. Curious to see what they say. I know you can close the windows and open the sliders to act as another room.

Good luck, but don't get your hopes up....

The rep called this morning to say smoking is permitted on the solarium for 16002/Epic.
