Weddings on board

Does anyone know if the cruise lines (particularly Princess) will perform same-sex weddings on board? And are they then recognized at home (assuming home recognizes same-sex marriages at all)?

I'm asking for a friend.

Most of the Carnival Corp lines will perform same-sex marriages or vow renewal/commitment ceremonies--this is a recent change.

However, in order for it to be recognized, it has to be performed in a state where SSM is legal (Mass, NY, hopefully MD) and then it depends on the laws of their state. We could be married in Mass. and while MD (as of right now) won't perform the ceremonies, they will still recognize them. If your friend is married at sea, it's a no go because those licenses are based on where the ship is registered (usually Panama).

I am getting married on the Breeze next year!!!!! kinda. lol

We are actually getting licenced in Mass. then having the ceremony by the Captain at sea on a Sea Day. But thats still getting married to us. And our Mass license will still be legal at home just as if we were married anywhere else. Im so excited that Carnival was able to finally change the rule and perform these ceremonies.

BTW.. All of you are welcome to join us!! Our wedding will take over the ship! lol And the trip is over Halloween.. Im going to have more costume changes than Cher that week. lol

It's a small world! We're getting married on the Pride in January. We elected to go the VR route because of the legalities involved. We were originally going to get legally married on the Pride when SSM was passed by the General Assembly, but now it's being placed on the ballot in November and it's thrown everything into chaos.

so now that the election has passed and all is a little more right with the world.. What are your plans? we are doing the VR on the Breeze in October still but will get our LEGAL MARRIAGE LICENSE here at home in MAINE!! I love this place..

We elected to stay with the at-sea wedding/VR route which kind of ruffled CCL's feathers since they want the certificate three weeks before the cruise and we can only get it one week before. Everyone's been talking about Maryland and Washington [state], that I completely forgot that Maine also reinstated their law! Everything is a little more right in the world.

We bought a pre-departure wedding package from Norweigian and used it on an RSVP cruise in 2010. In order to have it legally enforceable, we picked up a marriage license in Toronto and flew an ordained minister from Ontario to Florida to perform the ceremony on board prior to departure. The wedding planner was AMAZING and totally worth the money paid. She arranged for the minister to board and depart before sail, and even took him back to the airport for us. The crew on ship were excellent. I wasn't as impressed with the photography package. In the end we got all colour prints and digital copies. The black and white studio copies would have been an extra $3200 (not disclosed in advance). And the studio shots were far better than the colour shots around the ship. But not $3200 better.

The trick to legally registering the marriagein Ontario was to sign the certificate when we were back in Ontario. The wedding can take place anywhere, with a registered minister, but the certificate must be signed in Ontario.

And now we get to say we were legally married in Florida

We are booked for a wedding aboard the NCL Breakaway in 2014. We love NCL and have always received top notch service from them. We will be maried in NYC (the home port for the Breakaway). Next year we are sailing on the 1st cruise out of NY so we can check out the ship.

We live in Idaho so we gave our guests extra time to think about their plans.

thats awesome.. congrats.. I am planning to try some other lines maybe in 2014.. since im all booked for next year already.. I have heard good things about NCL and they leave from close to home for me as I live in Maine. But the price is so much cheaper with Carnival.. I know they are different styles and all but it hurts me to not go for the deal.. lol Im a budget Diva!

I know this is an old post but we were married on the Norwegian Jewel July 2011. It was a fantastic on board wedding which was also legal since New York had legalized same-sex marriage the month before. A cruise wedding is very unique, I hope it works out for your friend.

Again.. so excited about your wedding on the Jewel.. makes me want mine to hurry up and get here even more. last night at midnight we went to watch the first couples get the legal marriage licenses in the State of Maine.. it was amazing.. I cant wait to go get ours.. We will be licensed here and ceremony onboard the Carnival Breeze in October 2013.. Everyone is invited.. Come with us..

Girlllllll as much as we like to cruise if we could afford it we'd come crash lol. We are already doing two cruises in 2013. In May we are on the Norwegian Breakaway's inaugural cruise from NYC to Bermuda. Since we had a wedding cruise with 14 of us cruising and then I surprised my wife with a cruise to Canada on the Carnival Glory a week later as her wedding present, we never had a honeymoon. So the Breakaway will be the honeymoon we never had. Then in August we're hosting out 3rd annual family and friends cruise on the Allure of the Seas. If we could afford it we'd cruise at least 3x a year!!

That is so exciting! We got our license on the tenth (in MD) and we're having our legal ceremony at 12:00 am on Jan. 1--only 14 days until we leave for our wedding cruise though! Bah!
