[Note: I blogged this cruise and am trying to copy my blog posts here as a review. Installments will be by day and I will try to add some pictures as well. if you have ANY questions along the way, dont hesitate in asking!]

Sunday, May 13th, Summit Here We Come!

This cruise pretty much came as a surprise to my husband and me and we had about 3 weeks to get ready. We have cruised on RC about 85 days in total, 1 cruise on CCL [9 day] and 1 prior on Celebrity Zenith in 2001 [7 nt] and way way back when, a 7 nt on Chandris Amerikanis! - always with our children. This time, they drove us to Cape Liberty, a 40 minute drive. We haven’t cruised without them since summer ’07. We arrived around 11am to find absolutely no traffic to queue around the warehouse buildings towards the luggage drop off tent. Within minutes we were checking in and boarding the bus for the 1 minute ride across a large lot to the ship. If you are Celebrity Elite, do remember to go to the appropriate line to check in. We had no wait.

Once on board, we made a reservation for Normandie. We had already made our reservation for QSine, but were unable to secure the time we wanted for Normandie until on board. Seeing we already had one specialty reservation, we were given 20% off our second. Nice. We went to peek at our cabin before 1:30pm to free ourselves of our carryon’s [and met our Steward, Francois] which we did without a problem. We proceeded to the Sunset Bar where we met Patrick Martin, thee Sunset Bar Server. Wow, if you look for the meaning of ‘Hospitality’, you will see Patrick’s picture. We had some drinks; it was a very nice time. Do not let Patrick mix you Dark & Stormies if you are drinking vodka, enough said. We slept it off and missed dinner.

You can go down to the Emporium and find excellent hydrating hair conditioner for $19.00 or if inclined I was told white rain conditioner is also available in another shop. I opted for pricey when this happened to me! I can not put a price on good hair.

Monday, May 14th, 2012 • Day One @ Sea

Ahhhh, our first day at sea and the only day we slept late! At 10:00 am there was “Heartbeat of the Operation”; Cosmopolitan restaurant on Deck 4. Executive Chef, Pascal invites guests to a galley tour of their culinary playground. Well, time to book another cruise on Celebrity since we sadly missed this! Not to fret, by 10:30 am we were having breakfast alfresco, bellini and latte thanks to Cafe al Bacio in hand. Suggestion: breakfast on the sunset deck, it worked for us on this cruise. We often go to the main dining room, but dining outdoors is more appealing to us. We stopped in Celebrity iLounge, staff here is very helpful. We witnessed excellent staff to passenger communication, they really, really seem to enjoy helping the passengers navigate how to get online, some folks came in asking questions not pertaining to connecting but computing and staff is eager to give their time and educate.

There is NOTHING like GOOD Coffee at Sea! Wow, I am so glad we purchased the Premium drink package and had the best coffee, every morning! [and more!]

DSC_0249.jpg

*Yes. Yes, my husband is always more awake than I am early in the morning!!

DSC_0054.jpg

There were all sorts of seminars. Acupuncture 101, Detox for Health, non-surgical face lifts, Relieving back pain with Good Feet, Oceans Ahead with enviornmental officer Angela, and the unveiling of the current Tanzanite and diamond collection at the Jewelry Boutique on Deck 5. Today was also FREEDANCE to benefit Breast Cancer Research and Beyond the Podium guest speaker Matt Craig presented “Smithsonian Journey”.

Let me mention here how we were not at a loss for a “Promenade” like we are accustomed to on board RC Voyager class ships. Tonight was Formal night and requested attire is Formal wear. Mr. wore a dark suit and I wore a Navy Blue gown. The majority of passengers looked very nice. Evenings that are not formal, requested attire is smart casual. We did go to the main dining room tonight, the food was very good and service was as well!

Tonight’s show was Stars in their Eyes, a tribute to legendary stars and their music…No comments here we enjoyed the Martini bar this night. Martini Bar and Crush are opened from 5pm until…whenever we let them go! Located on Deck 4.

There is mis-information circulating the internet about CRUSH and Caviar offerings on board Summit. Know where your information is coming from and do not believe everything you read unless you know the source is a solid one and can offer facts from experience. Because someone sailed on a ship one time doesn’t mean they have a clue about your question. Every post I read on various message boards lured passengers into believing that Crush did NOT have ANY Vodka and Caviar Pairings, or Caviar offerings AT Crush. This is not true. In my hand I hold the menu:

White Sturgeon Pearls, White sturgeon Caviar Malossol American farmed caviar, briney and rich - $90.00

Golden Golani Osetra, Osetra Tiberius farmed caviar from Israel, nutty, salty and delicious - $120.00

Onyx river Caviar, paddlefish caviar, Wild American Caviar, briney and earthy - $38.00

Russian Coral, Russian Keta, wild, imported, fresh water Caviar - $18.00

Caviar is served with classic accompaniments and fresh blinis.

The rest of this menu consists of a variety of “Flights”, Caviar Degustation, Crush Signature Vodka, Old World Vodka, New world Vodka, and Gins of the World.

Tuesday May 15, 2012 • Day Two @ Sea

We woke to our version of a wake up call.

DSC_0138.jpg

Room service works well for this, they call prior to delivery and there is nothing I usually want more than a sip of coffee when I wake up. No. No. No. Bad coffee. I also ordered a Smoothie. It came perfectly chilled and was DELICIOUS. We ate fruit on the veranda, enjoyed watching the sea and got ready to quickly head to Cafe al Bacio for wonderful coffee. Feel free to order your favorite coffee; hint hint, even for breakfast! Anything goes! Today we also had breakfast alfresco on the Sunset deck.

Off to the Thalassotherapy pool this morning.

DSC_0253.jpg

Our immediate needs only called for one lounger which was easy to find. This morning the pool was not warm enough. Others in the pool with us said the pool was much warmer the day before. We remained hopeful, but when room became available in a hot tub we opted to get in. Funny thing, this is one of the rare times we used the hot tubs on board. We have a hot tub at home and we’re guessing due to the high amount of little ones usually in the hot tubs [on board RC] we just rather not. It was a great feeling to not have to question using the hot tubs here. The hot tub was delicious! We stayed here and soaked and relaxed for quite some time. You know what they say.….then it was time for lunch! We relocated to a table and enjoyed excellent grilled salmon from AquaSpa Cafe.

There is a lot to do today! Global Flavors; Rendez-vous Deck 4 Cooking demonstration with Chef Pascal. I forgot to buy the cookbook! Also, the production dancers were available to dance with from 9:30am - 11:30 am, Learn how to Waltz, Swing and Salsa baby!

For Captains Club folks, ‘Select & Elite’ Backstage Tour 12 noon.

Want to learn more about the Ship? Join Summit Engineer this afternoon. Karaoke? [not me!], Join Karaoke IDOL 3:00pm in the Celebrity theater.

Tonight we went to QSine! It was an awesome experience and the food was very good and fun. The decor screamed modern excellence in color and design.

You will order from an iPad and the dishes are served tapas- style. A table of 4 will have one captain. Everyone will click what they want, it populates to the captains ipad and the order is taken from there. I’m still waiting for Spring Rolls; intelligent guess is that they disappeared from our order. We opted to not order salads or soup because honestly there is so much food you can not eat every course. Many people ask, “How do I order here..?”

First, there is no need to even think about it, because your waiter will help you and walk you through. Second, you will want to order at least half a dozen different things or more. If it were only me and my husband dining I wouldn’t have even thought of ordering dessert and would have enjoyed different food stuffs. But, if you are a dessert lover, then save room! Your dessert menu is a dessert rubix cube. I wouldn’t miss making a reservation here!

Entertainment this evening; Comedy show of Bruce Smirnoff, Dancing with the Stripes and Top 40 Disco Party.

Celebrity Life Activities always has a lot going on! Bingo, Karaoke, Casino Royale Tournaments, Officer’s VS. Guests Pool Volleyball, World wide wine Tour, Trivia and Sports, scrap booking, Ice Carving demonstrations and more.

We're admitted Sushi snobs. At home we frequent just one restaurant for sushi where they make it for us using white seaweed or soy paper...But, for those Sushi Lovers like us, we will tell you that the Sushi on Board Celebrity is definitely very good!

Welcome To Bermuda! Remember, Set Your Watch Time & Smart Phones. You Are One Hour Forward Now.

We are docked with Norwegian Star

And, let me tell you that rumor from Celebrity Crew is boy-oh-boy how those NCL passengers party harder than any others. This was from Celebrity Crew.

Friends were here on Enchantment of the Seas only a day prior. Can it get any better than then leaving you a clue that they were there? No. No, it can’t! And, I couldn’t wait to find it!

The very first thing I did was find the 4 red telephone booths and locate what was left for me! Boy oh boy, I have to say I was so excited to find both! I love the island scavenger hunt idea…Thank You My Friend, You know who you are!

DSC_0599-sm.jpg

Again, we started our day with a visit to Cafe al Bacio for a wonderful wake up, then alfresco breakfast on the Sunset deck, bar.

DSC_0261.jpg

We disembarked around 10am, purchased a 3 day transportation pass [CASH ONLY] I think it was about $28pp. If you plan on touring the south shore and the north shore it is a great value to purchase a transportation pass and also affords you less thinking about how many tokens you will need to go from place to place. The bus and ferry system in Bermuda is very easy to use - BUT, I do caution you to always have a “Plan B”.

Many cruise ship passengers will be eager to rent Mopeds as means of transportation around the island. If you are American please remember that in Bermuda they drive on the opposite side of the road. The island has round abouts, the lanes are very narrow with MANY blind turns. If you are not familiar, dont think it is a joke, it isn’t when you end up with broken bones on your vacation holiday! We boarded the Pink #7 Bus that runs along the South shore. Our plan for the day: First stop was Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. This was our 6th visit to Bermuda and our first visit to the Light House. Second Stop, Warwick Long Bay to soak up a beautiful Bermuda beach, then third and last stop for lunch at the new Swizzle Inn South shore!

We were very happily the last to board the bus. This meant some great video and pics from the front of the bus, where I had enjoyable conversation with the lady bus driver until we left and then when we came to a halt before reaching the bridge. She immediately knew this was an accident. Well, actually, the first thing she said was a “moped accident’. She was on her radio immediately and I could hear the conversation as I was standing next to her. She decided to get off the bus and walk to see exactly what was happening. Well, now I had a seat, lol. She returned in 10-15 minutes. A young man and young girl, tourists on a moped- seemed like the man driving panicked going around a curve in the road and went to drive “american” onto the wrong side as a bus was oncoming. The bus made every effort to avoid the moped hitting a pole. The moped lost control, the young man and young girl flew off, the moped went under the bus. No talk about the young man at all, and the young girl either broke her leg or broke both her legs, but would be okay and there was “nothing life threatening” that happened. This made me believe the young man did not sustain any injury. Another bus was coming to pick us up on the other end of the bridge and we would have to walk behind some folks homes to the other side of the accident area in order to be picked up. We were able to see the girl on a back board, fire fighters were the first on the scene and stabilized her, but they still waited EMS. We got on the waiting bus and continued on to Gibbs Hill Light House. Tell your bus driver where you want to get off. For the light house, you will get off at Henry VIII. Lesson Learned: Dont rent mopeds if you are not confident in riding and have a plan b if you need to modify your plan for the day.

Uh OH

Moving right along.....

We climbed the hill towards the light house. It looks more threatening than it really is. We ARRIVED and I “made it”! My health has not be excellent and I questioned whether I could accomplish this. It felt good. Next question became an un-question as now that I was there I didn’t even question the climb to the top of the Light House! I could not wait to get up there!! Once there, I have to tell you, I did not want to leave. We spent more time here than we thought we would. It was amazing. The views incomparable, please visit here, you will be grateful you did. The climb was not too difficult at all. Plus, you might want to stop on the different levels to read the history of the Light House. We left the Light House with some trinkets for our kids. Now of course I am thinking we have to have this experience with them. [note: they have been to Bermuda via cruise ship multiple times, but we neglected seeing the light house with them].

Up Next...Swizzle South Shore

Be Flexible. We decided to go to Swizzle South shore before heading to the beach. It was lunch time, we were hungry. Errrrr and by this time, quite thirsty for our First-Of-The-Trip Rum Swizzles! We waited for the bus where we got off, at Henry VIII. The bus arrived very quickly and we took it to Swizzle where we had a shaker, larger than the pitcher full of RUM SWIZZLE! Don’t forget to take home a menu, better known as “The SWIZZLE TIMES”.

We shared a small order of wings and then shared a recommended fish sandwich. Everything was good. I’m not much into fried food like fried fish, if you’re not either, order something else that isn’t fried because I thought it was greasy, which….my palate does not like at all! I was glad my husband and I were only sharing this sandwich.

DSC_0517sm.jpg

Yet, the french fries were not greasy at all. We were there for the rum swizzles anyway. Our waitress was a doll! Loved her and the conversation. Loving [& cant wait to get back into] Real Estate and noticing a huge new build complex directly across from the restaurant I needed to pick her brain. It is affordable living housing. Bermuda residents are torn on this new affordable housing. Some feel it will be hard to sell their current older homes and they might not be able to afford the ‘affordable living’ units. If you have around $750k you can buy a small property here in Bermuda, but the cost of living is probably not somewhere you would call retirement or any thing like that. I will keep Bermuda in my heart as my favorite place to visit.

DSC_0520.jpg

After Swizzle we took the bus back to Warwick Long bay. Once situated amongst the very few others, I chilled and my husband explored on to Jobsons Cove, next to Warwick long bay. I do need to add the comment that there was a group of 3 girls that obviously had no idea that topless sun bathing is frowned upon here in Bermuda. We shortly moved on to Jobsons Cove where the water was warmer. We stayed here for a long while relaxing, taking pictures of the beauty and just chilling. It was glorious. Wish you were there.

Best Made Plans - Another first, we opted for a quick bite in Oceanview Cafe for dinner tonight. We have never had dinner from any on board buffet. It was fine. We dined alfresco which of course, for us, made it really nice. Have I mentioned how I love dining outdoors? I do, even at home. But, our plan was to hop the ferry over to Hamilton to Harbor Nights. By the time we finished dinner it was 8:30, too late! Also, I had no burning desire since we have had similar experience with Destination Dockyard and the description of Harbor nights mirrors Destination Dockyard. We chilled at the sunset bar for awhile. We watched the last ferry return from Hamilton..We ended up at the Martini bar with others we knew from online.

There were AquaSpa packages offered today, for those staying on board or returning to the ship early from excursion. Check ‘em out ladies and gentleman! The 3 for 1 Treatment could be right up your alley! Chose ‘3’ 20 minute treatments for $119. More on Persian Gardens in another post.

The shows tonight were Sirens, and a Bermuda Island Deck Party at 10:30 poolside, with caribbean island party band, Fusion.

Really enjoyed your pictures.

Hi Vicky,

We went to both, QSine and Normandie. Loved them both, but for totally different reasons. The food is excellent at both. QSine is definitely "Fun dining" and Normandie is "Fine dining". Qsine is all about fun, food, design and presentation....and menu items are a remake on all time favorites and served tapas style. IE: Sliders come one per person at the table with small glass shooters of toppings like mushrooms and such..and a basket of small buns, you assemble. We were somewhat distracted the evening we went to QSine, I do have pictures, but didnt end up with what I would have liked. Stay tuned, I will post some..

Normandie was the opposite end of the spectrum... we had a quiet table for 2 next to a window, there is a candle burning on each table.... dinner is cooked table side...courses paired with wine is an offering although we do not drink wine so did not have that..it is an entirely different atmosphere and evening and I cant compare the restaurants to each other....I can tell you that I will DEFINITELY go back to QSine next time we ar eon board Summit! Probably,,,twice!

Wed., June 27th will be Harbor Nights in Hamilton. [Destination Dockyard is Monday nights, June 11, 2012- Sept 17, 2012 at Dockyard] Double check the last ferry out from Hamilton back to dockyard. There is one added on, but I am not sure what time it is exactly..I think the last one leaves Hamilton at 9:30 back to Dockyard...make sure you know when this is so you dont miss it if you do go to Harbor Nights..

portofrome Thanks for the nice comments!

Thursday, looking forward to our evening having dinner at Normandie!

Be Flexible. Have a Plan B. Oh? Have I said this before…..?

Todays itinerary included looking for sea glass, [this quickly changed] which we also have never done. It wasnt a priority, but something different and fun to do. We planned on Alexandra Battery which is located at the eastern edge of Bermuda in St. Georges…it is a small beach well known for colorful sea glass. More than a mere beach, it also has history. Second stop was either Swizzle Inn or the Caves, it is the same bus stop. We didn’t know if we would be able to swing time at a beach, Shelley Bay was on the if we can squeeze in some time that’s where we’re going to stop. We did pass Shelley Bay on the bus ride to Swizzle and the Caves, it is a beautiful looking beach and park.

[..could be perfect!] - But,

We arrived in time to board the ferry to St Georges, where we were going to start our trek of the day by catching the bus or possibly a cab north to Alexandra Battery. We were totally caught off guard when all of a sudden the ferry director advised us as well as those behind us and in front of us that the ferry to St G was full- if we wanted to take the ferry to Hamilton, he motioned us over there. Oh boy. Quick decision, we would go to Hamilton. Ahhh, be flexible. I love and am passionate about Bermuda culture. Half of the ride to Hamilton I talked to the ferry official- dude on board at the aft of the ferry. He was familiar to me, I am guessing I have spoken to him on one of my past visits to Bermuda. We talked about the old Triminghams and what took its place and why… I asked him about the sushi restaurants I had heard about, we talked about the Fairmont and about E.R. Aubrey and I cant remember what else, but it was a wonderful conversation. Have I mentioned how I love the people and Bermuda culture yet?

We strolled Hamilton as I recalled some very, very special memories of when we were docked here in 2001 on Celebrity Zenith. Wow were our kids young, and I kept recalling the special moments that I hold in my heart with both my daughter and son, and my parents of our time together in 2001, Hamilton. This cruise was a non shopping cruise. There was really nothing I wanted to buy, I was here strolling Hamilton for the memories, as I kept touching and playing with the necklace I made sure to wear on this cruise. My husband bought this gorgeous diamond and white gold “purse” necklace for me at E.R. Aubrey in 2001…it opens too and can hold a $100 bill if folded just right…We walked around for an hour or so. We met a lovely lady, Karen. A hair dresser in Hamilton. If you will need a hair dresser, please message me for her information. What wonderful conversation we stopped and enjoyed.

Time for us to find the bus to St. Georges- which was our original start of the day but…we had to invoke Plan B! Swizzle Inn here we come! Then off to the Caves. We arrived at the bus and it left within minutes. Lovely. It was a 15-20 minute ride and we were standing in front of Swizzle Inn!

DSC_0741.jpg

DSC_0722.jpg

We walked through the patio to the stairs and grabbed a table upstairs on the balcony. Yes, I think we were here in 1987, but both my husband and I will not commit to this. [oh, to be young and 20 yrs old again] teeheehee

We ordered a small bbq chicken nachos, they were very good except I believe serving guacamole from anything but an avocado is a sin. This was commercial guacamole, I wouldn’t eat it. The rest was excellent and I was surprised I liked their combination of bbq chicken with typical nachos. We also shared quesadillas. And…….drum roll…..a pitcher [or 2] of Rum Swizzles. In both visits we did not see a table without a pitcher of Rum Swizzles on it! We couldn’t finish the second pitcher, actually Mr. should have never ordered it, lol, so we poured out water from our bottle and in went the Swizzle, To Go. [this proved to be a good move, you will find out why later on]

Before leaving Swizzle Inn, looking back 25 years I had to go inside and peek around and see if I recalled being here. We walked in and were greeted by autographed walls and business cards stuck into every groove available. It was great, I LOVE signing things. to the left is the small bar. I asked the bar tender-ess if she had a sharpie. OOoooo Let me loose with a sharpie where I can sign things & I’m having some ultimate fun, memories Im not likely to forget! As many know me on the net as CruiseDivaNJ, I started signing here, and then there. Along the counter edge was the perfect spot and then a top the opposite counter too! I actually singed next to Rachel Ray, the bar mistress came out from behind the bar to chat and show me where Rachel Ray had signed..it had faded over the past few years. You know, there has been more than one time we have been to Bermuda that I have signed a Bar! All of a sudden I am thinking that this has to be come a tradition.

Stacey, loved the review I read it on your blog but more pics here! We are thinking of X sometime soon. Maybe next year not sure yet. We enjoyed our trip in Washington so much thinking of exploring some other part of US!

Hi Stacey;

As a fellow native New Jerseyan(Essex County), cruise devotee, and Bermuda lover(5 visits down!), I LOVED reading your posts about your recent trip. We leave on the Summit 9/2, and it was like Old Home Week. The ship looks great, Bermuda is beautiful as usual, and I'm eagerly counting the days(89 as of now), chomping at the bit for my return to both the Summit(2nd cruise) and Bermuda(#6!!). I too have sailed the Zenith(my first cruise on Celebrity), my mom still mourns the departure of her favorite ship.

I love the tone of your posts, and you and hubby look like a lot of fun to hang around!

Welcome home, and maybe one day we'll be shipmates. :D

This is a very entertaining review. We will be taking our first trip to Bermuda in September and can't wait. I had already planned on visiting the lighthouse and now I'm really looking forward to it!

Vant wait to read more of your review.

We are big fan of the premium drink packages too! We're you able to order at Cafe al Bacio?
