Amsterdam Fabulous 14 days in Alaska by JD in MD
Having been bumped off the July 13th sailing by Holland America when they decided to charter the ship out to a Christian group, we were compensated with $300 of on board credit after we chose this cruise instead. It seems HA does this quite often according to some of the passengers. Fortunately, my husband and I could switch dates this time but I would be leery about the next time with a Holland America cruise. This was our 18th cruise, although only our second on Holland America but our third trip to Alaska. We flew from Baltimore to Seattle the day before the cruise. Shuttle Express picked us up at the airport and took us to the hotel for a very reasonable price. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza, which was very elegant. We chose this location because it was near the restaurant where a small group of us from Cruise Critic were going to meet for a pre cruise dinner. It was so nice to have one of the Ccers take the time to organize this. We all enjoyed the meeting. Continue reading... Fabulous 14 days in Alaska
Rhapsody of the Seas Well...We Had Fun! by LunaSea101
So in reading other reviews, it occurs to us that we are not the "typical" cruiser. We have only had one cruise previously (well actually one of us) and it was with Carnival to Mexico. We are mid-forties (traveling sans children), we aren't into shopping, learning about or buying jewelry, gambling or big-time drinking. We do like each other, meeting other interesting people, relaxing, exercising, visiting and learning about interesting places, and trying new things. In this review we expound upon our experiences so that you can hopefully make the best of your cruise. Cruise Prep: This was a somewhat last minute trip. We booked in March for a cruise that started on July 6. We booked through a local cruise travel agent, which was a great move since they did all the pre-cruise paper work. We got The Alaska Cruise Handbook by Joe Upton (newly revised in 2012) and found it to be really useful. We brought it along and used it to find out all kinds of cool stuff about where we were each day. Continue reading... Well...We Had Fun!
Island Princess Amazing by 21mel
ANCHORAGE: First, please be there a day early if you are just doing the cruise. The ship leaves at 8pm, but you have to land at the airport by 4pm to make it thru the (one way every 30 minutes) tunnel. My sister was supposed to land at 1 pm, got delayed and landed at 6pm. She missed the ship and had to meet us 3 days later in Skagway. Now, Princess was wonderful. Helped her every step of the way and refunded her ship days, but plane hopping and hotels were absolutely not in the budget. We had trip insurance, but it doesn't cover mechanical problems with the plane, and the airlines have a 6 hr window before they comp you a hotel. Since she was only 5 hrs late, she had to do everything out of pocket. We are still irked at United for not putting her on a different airline which would have had her in Anchorage in time. Veendam Veendam to Bermuda by shorebett
This was our 10th cruise and we usually choose our ship for the itinerary. The last cruise was on Celebrity, 6 years ago. We chose HAL this time because we were traveling with friends who had never been to Bermuda and we liked the fact that we had an extra day there, although in the end, all aboard was for 12 noon on the last day so unless you are going on a ship excursion, there was not much time for more than walking around Hamilton. Had celebrity been there the same amount of time, it would have been our first choice. Docking in Hamilton, we felt, was another plus. Our friends had traveled strictly on HAL cruises for their first 4 with another group who were firm HAL believers. The 4 of us together have been on 2 RCI cruises more recently. Our only other experience with Holland America was the Eurodam last summer in the Baltic and all around the ship and itinerary were wonderful, probably our most favorite cruise overall, so we felt the Veendam was a good choice. Celebrity Summit Perfection by pinma
We were in an Aquaclass (AQ2) room for the July 7 sailing to Bermuda. This was far and away the best cruise that we've been on and we will certainly return to Celebrity. Embarkation was a breeze. We arrived shortly after 11AM, dropped our bags, parked at the port, and walked over check-in. It was 25 minutes from walking away from the parking lot to having a glass of chilled champagne in hand. Parking was easy. We were delighted to be swept past the regular line, past the concierge line, right into the very short suite line. We explored the ship for a while before enjoying our first, quiet, meal on board at Bistro on Five. While I've had better crepes, the meal was certainly good. It was so nice to avoid the Oceanview Cafe. Cabins were ready nice and early and our luggage was delivered in time for us to have everything unpacked well before 4PM. Continue reading... Perfection
