Teen "house arrest" on the Oasis

Recommended Posts

I just got off Oasis today.

A 15 year old male did not come back to his cabin on Thursday. His mother noticed at 4 am that he had not returned. She had not seen her son since dinner.

Two announcements had to be made to locate the boy, waking up a ship of 8,000+ crew and guests at 4 am. The boy was located in another person's cabin.

The captain made his disgust known with his own noon announcement admonishing parents to parent their children. I was also at his session an hour later where he takes questions about the ship, and this topic came up. He was very blunt about his disgust with the situation.

The captain put the boy under cabin arrest so to speak; he was not allowed out of his cabin for the last full (sea day) of the cruise and one parent had to remain with him at all times.

Some people felt the punishment was too harsh - others, not harsh enough.

I wonder if they would have made them disembark, if it hadn't been a sea day?

What a shame that he spoiled the trip for himself, his parents and disturbed all the passengers trying to sleep. I suspect that the family would have been escorted off the ship if it had been a port day. What exactly did the Captain say?

In his noon message he said that a teen boy had not come back to his cabin and his mother sounded the alarm. The boy was located safely. And the captain apologized for the rude awakening, and then said, "parents, please parent your children."

During the Q&A session, a cruiser asked if there is a way for RCCL to control the packs of feral children roaming the ship. The captain said yes, parents, need to control their children. And what is wrong with a world where a 25 year old stays out, and the parents don't notice until 4 am? And hadn't seen him since dinner?

The captain explained that in cases such as this, crew look for the child in public areas. Then announcements are made in public areas. It is only as a last resort that announcements are made to the cabins.

TWO announcements were made, around 15 minutes apart.

The captain did not get all public relation-y on this. He was p*ssed and let his disgust shine through.

Bravo Captain. Causing that much of a disturbance at that time of the morning better have consequences. I wonder how the parents feel towards the captain. If my son had ever done that, he would be swimming home.

This falls under what we call the 15/15 rule. It is a case of the captain doesn't have 15 minutes to fix what the parents have screwed up for 15 years. Confine them all to their cabins. Oxygen thieves.

The "kid" was 25 years old? I am confused.

If he is 25 years old then his not a kid and is outside the rule of the parents. Why are the parents being so frantic about a 25 year old they ask the captain to page for them? If they are 25 years old and on a cruise by themself with their parents then they probably "hooked up" with someone. Since they are consenting adults then leave it alone. The whole family should have been on "house arrest" then. Parents for being frantic and the "kid" for not answering the pages. Oxygen thieves. :D

The OP said he was 15.

See the OP; must have been a typo...kid was 15.

My kid, 17 1/2 had a curfew of midnight, at 5 past I put on my shoes and was headed out to find her. She was in the hall headed my way, had wanted to see the " day " sign changed. She was sober, quiet and respectful, but she knew I was expecting her and she knew what was expected of her behavior! My 15 yo was in bed. People party, they let their kids roam and it gets ugly. This mom is lucky it was just a po'ed Captain and not a dead teen.

Why don't the cruiselines institute a curfew for kids. Pick a realistic age- appropriate time as the kids are on vacation. Have it as part of the cruise contract with defined punishments. It would be nice if parents properly parented their kids but we all know there are some parents who just let their kids do whatever they want. They seem to think that their vacation is a vacation from their parental duties as well. These are the kids that make people cringe when they know there will be lots of kids on a cruise.

Who's cabin was the boy in? If he was in a cabin with other kids his age. Why didn't the parents in that cabin send him back to his cabin. If he was hanging with older people in cabin, there can't be anything good going on there.

I hope be wasn't in a employee's cabin. The story just seems weird to me, that anyone would allow a 15 year old in their cabin so late.

On my 7/5/12 EOS cruise there were a ton of kids out very late.

I didn't even know there was a curfew. Maybe some were with their parents, but there were enough that weren't, and no one was enforcing anything.

The ones I noticed didn't seem to be doing much of anything. Just hanging around the steps or taking the elevators up and down.

With that said, I say make parents accountable. Fine them for each episode their kids are out past curfew :p. I bet after a while, it wouln't be an issue. :D

Wow. My husband and I were on the ship as well when this happened. We had no idea until now why those announcements were made at 4 am. We were, however, extremely annoyed that we were woken up so early by the voice over the PA system coming into our cabin asking for a male to report to the desk. After hearing the punishment, I think it was much deserved. Brava Captain Brava
