Default Ventura - cracked whilst crossing bay of biscay

Just read that Ventura has suffered a crack width wise by breakers barAttachment 248840 so don't know if we are going anywhere this weekend or not - fingers tightly crossed that it's all ok!

Seven tenths of the world is covered in sea - that's a lot of cruising to do!

I suspect this has been a problem joint since it was built, but it has only just manifested itself.

Stress fractures on steel are not unknown and there's no way every weld can be checked during construction.

It's due for a refit, looks like an extra job is required.

I can't see the authorities letting it sail from Southampton until fully checked and an apt mini cruise sized window to fix in a shipyard!

Well seeing as it is superstructure that has failed and not the hull itself, I can't see any issue apart from the fact they will have to close off that area to repair it. If it was a crack in the side of the ship that would be a huge problem.

I think whatever the problem is it will have to be repaired as there will be a confidence problem with passengers and bookings if it is not fixed and also passengers are not going to want to pay to go on a ship where the whole surrounding area will be closed off. There are plenty of other ships out there so I think getting it repaired will have to be a top priority.

P&O say that Ventura will sail as scheduled today. The deck in question is Aluminium which has no structural strength or safety implications. Repairs will commence today in Southampton. See P&O Facebook/Twitter sites

Strange how the flat section is cracked yet the top and bottom wooden trims are not. To me it looks more cosmetic than anything.

Edit. I take that back......the other thread does give a better description and it does sound worse than the photo shows.

Yes but bear in mind the scaremonger aspect of any report!

And don't some people relish the chance to do some of that.

As ever some of the speculation is way over the top. It should come with a health warning.

I must admit that I'm always amazed at the number of "experts" that appear on any forum whenever there is a perceived problem. Me, I know nuthin.

P&O's Ventura cruise ship undergoes crack repair work

Repairs to a cruise ship are being made in Southampton after a crack appeared in its top deck while it was at sea.

Passengers described the crack on board P&O's Ventura cruise ship as three inches (60mm) wide, stretching the entire width of the aluminium deck.

The company said an inspector from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency is on board and the crack raised no structural strength or safety concerns.

The ship is expected to resume sailing later on a short cruise to Belgium.
