Question Put a HOLD on river cruise for 2015 and wonder?

if any of you have done this in past?Seems every time I find a cruise I like ,with right date, and cabin its SOLD OUT over a yr.in advance.

So, put a $250 pp HOLD on Scenic cruise for 2015(will go toward balance, but non refundable,I think?)should have checked with TA.Did this for next cruise in 2014 because same thing happened. So far,so good.
Know the boats are small, and Scenic has less of them, but wonder if the popularity of river cruises now causing this on other lines to?

o??

I am reserving a Douro River cruise with AMA for 2015 today (at least, hopefully--TA is calling). Definitely hoping it is not sold out.

I just reserved GCT's new Bordeaux river cruise for May 2015....$500 fully refundable deposit.

It has not been publically announced yet. They sent out emails to their frequent travelers.

We went on the Scenic Jewel in August of this year and booked the last deluxe balcony cabin 15 month in advance!! I think Scenic is very popular with Australians and New Zealanders.
Cheers

Have already put a deposit for May 2015 --> the Elbe with Viking.

Not many companies cruise the Elbe - so our choices were limited. Don't think the deposit is refundable, but always carry travel insurance, so we do have that option if we cancel for health reasons.

As far as Scenic goes, we put a deposit down on a Scenic cruise (south of France) almost 20 months out. When the brochures came out, they had stopped doing the itinerary we booked - so we had the option of putting the deposit towards another cruise, or taking the money back. We took the money back and booked with Avalon.

Default 2015

I believe that Vantage also has a refundable deposit on 2015 river cruises. We are interested in the Elbe and waiting for dates and prices with Vantage.

We put a hold on Vantage China for 2015 and they called me in Nov. with dates. Pretty sure hold fee was refundable and positive that it was transferable....i've traveled with Vantage so many times that quite frankly I'm more concerned with ME still being around in Oct 2015 than them!

my DH(70)said same thing.Told him not to worry, will get insurance just in case,But isn t it sad when you get that age where THAT could be a concern.
Maybe that s why I m so interested in crossing things off bucket list, have seen a few older(*80s )cruisers that are having such a hard time. But then I think, hey, they re STILL HERE and thats GREAT>hope I m same way.

I hope you are too, Rachel! Be careful out there tonight, we saw on the news how bad it is in your neck of the woods.

Hydrokitty,
You will love Vantage China. We did it in 2012. Our Program Manager was Tan, and he is simply the best. He really takes care of you.

Question After I put this HOLD on was wondering

how many of you take the first cruise by that company to a specific itinerary?I always wonder if they have to work out the rough spots.

The one I put on HOLD with Scenic is doing its first cruise next yr....so maybe its good I m going in 2015?

After 10 different areas, getting to a point where I ve seen most of them.Wish they d come out with a few more.See Viking has a new eastern France one starting next yr.Maybe more luxury ones will also go there now?

Good point..I usually don't like to buy the "first" of anything except reading material for the same reason. As for the itineraries it's true after you've done so many river cruises it's hard to find ones that go places you haven't seen.... We need more rivers in Europe! I want to do one in Spain!

Join us on the Douro river cruise Amavida in May 2015, hydro kitty. It is Spain and Portugal. We are doing our own precruise in Madrid.

We have been thinking of doing either the AMA or Vantage Douro river cruise, but we already have a Celebrity cruise around Japan booked for April 2015.

DH and I sailed on Scenic's inaugural Tulip Time cruise. Some of the "optionals" turned out to be included as our CD advocated strongly for us. For example, the trip to Bruges was not supposed to be included, but it was when we got there. Also, they included a "bag lunch" for our trip to the Kukenhof (if desired....). Not a fancy package - but a huge amount of food packed for us. The weather was great - so it was wonderful to sit out on a bench and "picnic"there.

Yes, I seem to remember there were a few glitches - but nothing that sticks in my mind. I figured there would be - given it was the first time they sailed this itinerary - so was prepared.

If I wasn't willing to accept some challenges, I wouldn't have booked the first sailing.

Fran

Thumbs up Good points

and have done the Douro one(LOVED it),plus Egypt,Russia, and Vietnam. So not all European cruises.
Then I alternate with ocean, to get the best of both worlds.
We re not even retired yet, and still spend 1 mo.yr cruising.
If we wait till were too old ,won t be able to keep up.
Did the driving and bus tours when younger, but just too much trouble now.Like to unpack once, be waited on, watch entertainment,etc..Great.
