Most ships now have towers for cells, etc. If you use your phone with any package you may have to pay their fee for using their tower as well as your servers. So, check this out before you do it. Some ships charge $2.99 a minute and they are slow connecting. .

Have you verified AT&T will sell you a sim card? The sim card thing for cell phones hasn't really picked up here.

Any phone you get in the US won't work in Samana or St Maarten.

The phone will most likely work... It will just cost extra to use

I was talking to my Optus mobile provider here in Australia yesterday to organise adding international roaming pack to my plan for my cruise duration. The charges are really good, however the staff member reminded me to check which network I was using prior to using the phone especially onboard as the use of ships satellite is not including and can cause additional unexpected charges.

Yep, every trip to NY, we buy a sim from AT&T (the store opposite the public library) Works really well and from memory, its about $60 for the month, so pretty good value. Thanks for info on usage in San Juan & St Thomas, sounds like AT&T will work well again :)
