Alcohol on ship

Recommended Posts

We are going on a Royal Caribbean cruise in September. We are interested in taking our own liquor on the ship. We used to be able to do this but we're not sure if it is allowed anymore. Also, what about the airlines. Will they let you put it in your suitcase?

RCCL rules state that you can not bring your own alcohol aboard. The say if found they will take it and return it to you at the end of the cruise. They do say that you can bring your own wine as long as RCCL does not serve it. Now that is what they state. What is reality? RCCL has a don't ask don't tell kind of atmosphere. They don't go thru your bags or your carry on. Your room steward will bring you glasses and ice if you need and will even empty your mini fridge. And with the new rule about buying booze on the ship it's going to happen more and more.

We just got back from AOS and they didn't even look for alcohol. WE carried on 3 bottles of vodka in the original bottles and bought some in St Maarten and we were able to keep all of it with us, no problem. It was like there weren't even looking for it.

There is a difference in the security checking in at the pier and the security the ship operates for itself at the ports of call. The Port security officials are not Royal Caribbean employees and seemingly have no interest in wine, liquor, soda or other beverages stashed in your carry on bags. However, once you set sail, the security at each port of call is handled by shipboard security officials. These individuals will be looking for alcohol you are carrying back from the ports so they can store it for you until the end of the cruise.

Buy your booze in your departure port city (after you fly in, before you board). Will save you lots of hassle & potential problems. You can get your cab drive to stop by somewhere on the way to the port (if you aren't renting a car of your own). I walked on with a few bottles and some beer a few weeks ago w/ no problems.

The other option is to wait till you are on board and buy from the RCI "Duty Free" stores. Even with the current 9.50/bottle consumption fee - those deals are tough to beat.
