Day 1 (Saturday) - San Juan

Day 2 (Sunday) - St. Thomas- Formal Night

Day 3 (Monday) - St. Kitts

Day 4 (Tuesday) - Sea Day

Day 5 (Wednesday) - Aruba

Day – 6 (Thursday) – Curacao – Formal Night

Day 7 (Friday) - Sea Day

San Juan Saturday) - Debarkation

As always with my reviews I am first going to give MY impressions and MY opinions and things I noticed concerning some of the most discussed topics here on Cruise Critic as well as the view of the islands. I will be adding grades (A,B,C,D, or F) for the dining facilities, cabin, entertainment, facilities, excursions, etc. After that I will move on to the good stuff….The review of the ship and ports along with lots of pictures.

A quick brief about us:

We are a couple (I am 59 and the wife is…….??? I would get killed if I put her age out there) that qualifies for the Senior Discount when available from North Carolina. This was our 5th cruise (Was Gold Members and now Platinum - WooHoo) which have all been on Royal Caribbean with the first cruise on Sovereign of the Seas, followed by Serenade Of The Seas, Freedom Of The Seas and Enchantment Of The Seas. We went on Sovereign even after reading all kinds of bad reviews and we loved it and started us cruising. We have been cruising on average of every other year and this cruise was the first time we did two cruises in the same year.

Feel free to ask questions if you like as we go along. I will be posting the review from now and throughout the weekend an I promise I won't drag this out for days unless somethings come up that cannot help. So here we go!

Food & Food Facilities:

During the week of the cruise we ate at different places on board including the MDR, Windjammer, Johnny Rockets, The Café Promenade and Giovanni’s Table.

Main Dining Room:

DSCF1323_zpssvwejevg.jpg

I have been on cruise critic since 2010 and I have read many threads concerning the food in the MDR and have often times made comments in those threads. I am not going to go into what we ate each night (Because I don’t really remember everything I ate) but will give my overall opinion for the week on the highs and lows. We both thought the food for this cruise was fair to good. Once again on this cruise there was nothing we ate during the week that we thought was just totally excellent that we would want to have again if we were on a back to back. It was hit and miss with each course that was served (Appetizers, main course & deserts) but for the most part we “Hit”! My wife has diabetes so she eats sugar free deserts and she noticed that the sugar free deserts were much better on our previous cruises. I enjoyed the second formal night best with the fisherman’s seafood platter and I ordered the Prime Rib also and when I finished the Fisherman’s Platter the Prime Rib was brought to me right away. I just started eating lobster a couple of cruises ago as I was never a fan of lobster. We were in Aruba the night before the lobster night on the ship and ate dinner at a very nice seafood restaurant where I had a plate with Jumbo Shrimp, Swordfish and a nice big lobster tail. That lobster tail was delicious and I can now tell without a doubt the difference between lobster tails served at a nice restaurant and the ones served in the MDR. With that being said, I still thought it was pretty good in the MDR.

Our waiter for the week was always good at bringing you something else if you did not like what you had and folks at our table would also sometimes order two of appetizers, main course and deserts and they were brought with no problems and a smile. For those who had soda packages or drink packages or no package the bar waiter was always there to take our drink orders as soon as we sat down and would usually remember what we like..

There was the “Suggested” clothing for each night in the daily Cruise Compass (Casual except for the two formal nights), but it was obvious that RCI is backing away from enforcing the suggested clothing on any given night in the MDR. I will not give my views as to what we think as that is not the purpose of my review. Casual was defined in the cruise compass as: “Sundresses or slacks and blouses for the ladies, sport shirts and trousers for the gentlemen”.

Day 1 Casual (Whatever you wore aboard)

Day 2 – Formal (Sunday)

Day 3 – Casual / 70’s Attire

Day 4 – Casual / Wear Something White (Sea Day)

Day 5 – Casual / Caribbean

Day 6 – Formal (Thursday)

Day 7 – Casual (Sea Day)

HOWEVER

We saw it all in the MDR. We saw men wearing T-shirts, jeans, dress slacks, shorts, button down shirts, Sport Jackets, shoes, sandals, flip flops, sneakers, polo shirts and wearing baseball caps at the table. The only thing I didn’t see were wife beater shirts or swim wear.

Women were wearing dresses, skirts, shorts, skorts, sun dresses, blouses, slacks, pants suits, jeans, dress shoes, sneakers and sandals. The women were however generally dressed much nicer than the men they were with.

Kids (And there wasn’t very many on this cruise) wore pretty much the same style of clothing that you would see their parents in.

Formal Nights:

There are two formal nights on this cruise on Sunday & Thursday and the style of dress on these nights were men in Tux, suits, shirt and ties, dinner jacket with slacks shirt and tie or with an open shirt collar. Women wore gowns, evening dresses

And Also On Formal Night………………………………….

There was the “Suggested” clothing for each night in the daily Cruise Compass, but was obvious that RCI is backing away from enforcing the suggested clothing on any given night in the MDR. I will not give my views as to what we think as that is not the purpose of my review.

My Ratings: MDR Food – B+ / Service - A

Windjammer:

DSCF1747_zpscjzjvfss.jpg

Most days we breakfast and lunch here and there were and on the first sea day we ordered breakfast through room service as part of the classic romance package I pre-ordered. Basically the only thing different from the regular room service breakfast is the choice of Mimosas or Bloody Mary’s. They use to give you caviar with it also but not anymore, not on this cruise at lease.

It appeared that they had less of a variety of offerings at breakfast and lunch. A new friend we met on this cruise was like “What happened to the donuts”? At lunch we were able to find something to suit our fancy be it hot food or cold cuts and I really like the taco bar. The Windjammer was hit and miss venture and if got something I didn’t like I would just let the waiter take it away and then go get something else. The Breakfast my wife didn’t really care for the breakfast offerings and would usually just eat fruit, but it was ok for me. Breakfast and lunch were always packed out especially lunch on sea days but we were always able to find a table empty to sit at. There were always tables up by the entrance, so we would usually sit up there. The Windjammer is what it is… a buffet. Is it the best buffet….No but we were always able to find something to eat. One thing I did not like about the Windjammer on Adventure was the setup. There was no islands where you can go on both sides but the food was lined along the walls and if you came at the wrong time the lines got kind of long.

That is all I have to say about the Windjammer.

Giovanni’s Table:

DSCF1743_zpsf7nc4x0n.jpg

This was a great dinner dining experiences on this cruise. We really like eating at Chops in the past in the pre new menu era but there is currently no Chops on Adventure. I was actually surprised that on a ship this size there was only one Specialty Dining Restaurant, but it is my understanding that more will be added when Adventure goes into dry dock in 2016. The food and atmosphere in Giovanni’s is just outstanding and it is a good escape from the hustle and bustle of the MDR. I think that Chops and the old Portifino however had a more cozy atmosphere.

On this night we had a reservation with our new found friends and dinner mates. At Giovanni’s the appetizers, salads and pastas are served family style and there was plenty of each item for the four of us.

For appetizers we ordered:

Mozzarella in Carrozza alla Giovanni - Warm mozzarella and prosciutto bake, crispy ciabatta, mixed greens and Dijon mustard drizzle

Capesante al Forno - Oven baked, almond crusted scallops with red bell pepper pesto ijon mustard drizzle

Insalata alla Cesare - Romaine lettuce tossed with Caesar dressing and herb croutons

Pasta:

Risotto aiFungiTrifolati - Traditional risotto made of Arborio rice and forest mushrooms, finished with porcini and truffle mushroom tapenade

RaviolidiPolpa diGranchio - Maryland crab ravioli with sweet corn and crab meat sauce

Lasagna Tradizionale al Sugo diCarne - Traditional meat lasagna (This is a lunch item but I asked for it and got it – Don’t be afraid to ask if you want it)

Entrees (Served as individual portions):

Costolette diAgnello alle Erbe* - Grilled lamb chops, baby vegetable caponata, sautéed spinach and Merlot reduction

FagottinidiVitella RipieniaiFunghiPorcini, Provolone e Prosciutto Cotto, Salsa al Tartufo Nero - Veal tenderloin parcels filled with porcini mushrooms, provolone cheese and ham, with sautéed asparagus, black truffle sauce and veal jus

Filetto diPollo Ripieno diRicotta e Funghi, Salsa alla Salvia e Chardonnay - Chicken breast filled with ricotta and mushroom, wrapped in prosciutto and served with Chardonnay-sage sauce

Filetto diManzo alla Griglia, Patate Fritte all’Olio Agliato, Salsa al Barolo o Burro diGorgonzola* - 8 ounces of grilled beef tenderloin, served with garlic fries and your choice of Barolo reduction or Gorgonzola butter

We all enjoyed everything we ordered from appetizers to entrees very much. Good food and good service. We thought it was well worth the cost and we all left very stuffed!

Johnny Rockets:

DSCF1694_zpsaz1rmde4.jpg

This was well worth the $6.95 price of admission. We wanted to try it out one day for lunch for a change of pace, so the 2nd sea day was a perfect time. The burgers on the bar in the Windjammer were typical buffet bar burgers…dry but edible. Johnny Rockets burgers were outstanding, nice and juicy and very tasty. I had a big double cheese burger with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and onion rings on it and a bowl of chili…..superb! Wife just had a regular cheese burger and she thought it was very good. They bring you out a plate of Onion Rings and French Fries without even asking. The onion rings were very good. I also had a strawberry shake that was very thick and delicious! The waiter was very nice and efficient. We also enjoyed the little dance number that the waiters do every so often.

Café Promenade:

DSCF1351_zpsth9uub7p.jpg

We usually stopped by here late night after doing a little partying and would grab a couple of slices of pizza or little sandwiches to take back to the room and also grabbed a few slices to take back to the room one day after a long hot day of our excursion. The pizza wasn’t bad for a quick late night snack. It’s not as good as Sorrento’s (Which Adventure does not have) but it wasn’t too bad! I also would usually go here early in the mornings and grab a cup of coffee.

Smoking:

Smoking was in the usual places, 12th deck Starboard, Pool Deck Starboard, 4th deck Starboard, The Casino, Some Clubs, and the Sky Bar. I passed through the casino on a few occasions and the smoke in my opinion was never overpowering (I’m a non-smoker) but you did notice depending on where you were at in there. There was no notice of anyone smoking on the balconies.

Drinks:

We did not purchase one of the drink packages as it would not benefit us as we only spent about $350.00 for the week for the two of us on drinks. Our friends did have drinks package and it seemed to work out great for them. The price of drinks were noticeably higher than our last cruise but we still ordered about the same amount of drinks as we usually do. The bar tab was higher but still well below the threshold for ordering a drinks package. Where ever we were at and ordered drinks I always made sure that I asked for a nice strong and the bartenders always happily gave us a good pour and I would tip them extra according for it. I have read a lot on Cruise Critic about how there was little or no bar servers on the pool deck and in some of the clubs on RCI ships. On this cruise they were plentiful. Be it on the deck, the 12th deck, solarium or the clubs, I never had to go to the bar to get my own drink unless I wanted to. I can honestly say that I did not see any change from any of my previous cruises. The bar servers are very accommodating also. We ordered drinks in the MDR one night and the wife sent hers back because she said it tasted like a virgin drink. Our server was more than happy to take it back and when he brought it back it was plenty strong.

Ship Appearance & Customer Service:

Adventure Of The Seas also seem to get a lot of bad press here on Cruise Critic, bad to the point that people wonder if they are making a mistake to book a cruise on this ship. Some of things people have wrote about, I do not go looking for like carpet needing to be replaced or a little rust on the balcony, etc, etc. As a I walk around the ship as a casual observer not really looking for anything I can say that Adventure of the Seas is in pretty good shape. There was nothing that just jumped out at me that made me say “wow this is bad” and as far as anything else I am not one to sweat the small stuff as I think if you are really looking for something you will find it, not just on a ship but anywhere! I would love to see this ship once upgrades are made after the dry dock.

I received outstanding service anywhere I went on the ship and the customer service desk was helpful anytime I went there for something. We never received any service with attitudes anywhere on board, but received the service with a smile that I have always received.

Ship Appearance – A / Customer Service – A

Entertainment:

My taste in entertainment varies on the ship. Some things I have a been there done that attitude and then there are some things I like to see and do on the cruise. I don’t do the Welcome Aboard, musical productions or the Farewell Show as I can watch that on the TV or if I miss it….oh well! Here are some of my grades and comments:

Comedian - I have not seen a comedian on a cruise that I have really enjoyed yet. Our friends and us left out of the show for the comedian as we did not find him funny at all and I was nodding during the show.

Comedian – F

Ice Show:

Enjoyed it, but I like the show on Freedom Of The Seas better.

Ice Show – B+

The Quest in Studio “B Ice Skating Rink”– Always a Hoot and our section won to boot!

The Quest – A

Worlds Sexiest Man Contest:

They could not have this and I wouldn’t miss it! – D-

Belly Flop: No Comment - It is what it is: - C

Various Trivia Games: We enjoy these. Some Activities staff members make them more fun than others

Trivia – B+

Karaoke: Lots of fun. This was the first cruise I participated in singing:

Karaoke – A

The 70’s Disco:

This something that I think I have attended for the last time. It was good the first time I saw it, but now with more cruises under my belt it has become stale for me. They do know that there was more music in the 70’s than what they play on this night don’t they??? It is the same exact music and the same exact performance with the Saturday Night Fever music and dancing and the very same Village People act. I think that it is beyond time to upgrade this night. Remember this is my opinion and there are however a lot of people who seem to enjoy it especially those that appear to be first time cruisers on Royal.

70’s Disco Show – D

Love & Marriage Game Show:

Enjoyable but they can update the questions. In this game show the exact same questions are asked on every cruise. I think the Cruise Directors should come up with their own questions to ask to keep it interesting from cruise to cruise.

Love & Marriage – B

The Silent Party:

This was fun in the club (Jesters). You are given a pair of headsets that has music that you can switch between on two different stations. There is no music actually playing in the club thus the reason they call it a silent party. Because of the two different stations of music, everyone is on the dance floor dancing to different music. If you take off the headsets you hear people actually singing to the song they are listening to which makes for a very funny sound. I really enjoyed this!

Silent Party – A

Clubs, Dancing, Band, DJ:

Depending on what your taste is there was plenty around the ship be it in the clubs or the pool deck to suit your fancy – B+

Entertainment Overall:

Even with the likes and dislikes in entertainment, I always found something to do while on board to stay entertained. I find that people who say there is nothing to do on the ship and write reviews on how miserable they were just really didn’t want to do anything. The daily cruise compass has so much activities and entertainment to participate in you can’t do everything that you would like to do. I have found this to be the case on each of my cruises.

- B

Excursions:

This was the first cruise that we did not do any Royal Excursions and booked all Private companies. The prices on private excursions were much cheaper than Royal and they were all with reputable companies that come highly recommended. All the excursions we booked were morning (Purposely) excursions that would have you back to the ship at about 2:00 at the latest so there was no fear of not returning to the ship on time. I will give my grade of each of these excursions in my review of each island.

Up Next - On to the fun stuff – Our journey, The ship, The islands, The excursions and lots of pictures!

Idw if you've sailed Carnival but how would they compare to Guys Burgers, cause they were probably the best burgers at sea, comparable to Five Guys

I haven't sailed Carnival but have read that the burger place on there is pretty good. I like JR's on the ship and on land. We like to eat lunch there on the last sea day for something different after lunch in the Windjammer all week. I will say I like 5 Guys also!

Thanks for posting this. I love reading reviews. We are looking forward to this ship in just over a month. I've been on the bigger and smaller ships; but this is the first one in this class. Can't wait.

This was our first on Voyager class also! I call it the mini me of the Freedom Class!

Pre Cruise:

We left home on the morning of the 7th of October (Our 35th Anniversary) and drove to Atlanta Georgia (3 ½ Hours) to spend the day before flying out to San Juan on the next day. Charlotte NC has some of the highest air fares in the country and it was actually cheaper for us to drive to Atlanta and leave our car at the airport for the week than to fly out Charlotte. We went and made a day of it for our anniversary even though we really planned to do our celebrating on the cruise. For dinner in the evening we ate at Gladys Knights Chicken and Waffles in which there are three locations in the Atlanta area. If you are ever in Atlanta and looking for some good down home southern cooking with good service then stop by one of these locations and you won’t be disappointed.

The next morning we were up early for the 7:00 am Southwestern flight to San Juan with a stopover to change planes in Orlando and we arrived in San Juan at 12:30 PM. We had flown to San Juan for a previous cruise so we knew exactly where to go after grabbing our luggage to get a taxi. Our ride to the hotel was about 15 minutes and cost $16.00 and $1.00 per bag. The last time we were in San Juan we stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Miramar which was not a bad place but this time we chose to stay at Condado Plaza Hilton. We arrived at the hotel and the check in was quick and easy and the desk staff were very friendly and helpful. I was glad we got there when we did because they had a room ready even though check-in was not until 4:00. Later on as the day went on I saw in the lobby lots of folks arriving and the check-in line was a little long. There was some folks that arrived before four that had to actually sit around and wait for a room. I had booked a City/Lagoon view but I upgraded to a Ocean view upon arrival and check-in. The hotel was very clean and the property and pool areas are kept up very well. The room was nice and the ocean view was spectacular!

There is a Starbuck’s on the property and a Denny’s restaurant also. The Plaza Hilton actually has two buildings one on each side of Ashford Avenue. There is an over the road enclosed bridge to walk between buildings. On one side you have the ocean views and on the other side you have the city/lagoon views and the Denny’s is on that side. I had read reviews that this Denny’s was very slow but we went there and had breakfast the next morning after we arrived (In San Juan 2 days before the cruise) and we got very speedy service from the time we sat down to the time our food came.

DSCF1305_zps2ktwjnmn.jpg

DSCF1303_zps1jtotwsw.jpg

Our Stroll down Ashford Avenue to see what it had to offer. There were restaurants, shops, souvenir stores, bars and other hotels. There was also a WalGreen’s and a CVS right across the street from each other about a 15 minute walk from the hotel down Ashford. The Condado area is a very safe area as we had no hesitation to walk the main drag day or night.

That night we hate dinner at the Ropa Vieja Grill which was three minute walk down Ashford from the hotel. I highly recommend this place as the food was good and reasonably priced as compared to the prices in the restaurants at the hotel. If you go you must try the Shredded Steak Mofongo….Simply outstanding and you leave there very full! Back at the hotel we went to the lobby bar and had a couple of margaritas that cost me $39. And folks think the price of drinks on the ship is high! We only had drinks there once. Another place I avoided was the store in the hotel. They were selling one can of beer for $8 and they had a bottle of pre mix Barcardi Bahama Mama drink for $17.99 (I did not buy) and at the CVS they sold the same thing for $7.99.

On the next day after that breakfast at Denny’s, we took a bus (0.75 cents) right in front of the hotel to Old San Juan. It was about a 10 minute ride. We walked around a little bit and then took the free trolly up to the old fort Morro. The trolly is covered and open on the sides. There was a rain storm for about 40 minutes and during the ride I got soaked especially when wind blew the rain into the trolley. When we got to Morro we got out and ran to a little tunnel entrance to escape the rain. After a quick visit to the CVS to pick up some last minute needed items and a stop for a couple of drinks and wings at Senior Frogs, we got on the bus and went back to the hotel to await 2 couples from the role call that we planned to meet.

Loving this! We'll be on Adventure 3 WEEKS from today!

We stayed at that same hotel for our last Adventure cruise and it was fantastic!

Can't wait for the rest!

Yes it is a very nice hotel and I couldn't beat the price we booked it at!

Thanks for taking time to do your review. We will be doing a B2B the last week of March. We've sailed from SJ twice before both on Adventure but it has been a few years.

Looking forward to see what you did in each port. Hoping to get some new ideas!

After we met we all had planned a trip that evening to go to the El Churry truck to grab a Charassco sandwich. This is a truck that was featured on the TV Show “Man vs. Food” and the sandwiches featured was suppose to be very very good. They were either on a hogie roll or wrap with your choice of chicken or steak or mixed with the fixing you want on them along with this secret sauce. We jumped in a taxi and went there 9They only come out after 7:00 in the evening as they are popular with the party goers who come after the clubs close early morning. Adam from Man vs. Food was spot on with this as these sandwiches were absolutely “Da Bomb”! one of the best sandwiches I have had. I was glad we didn’t miss out on this little treat!
