FitzLA Posted October 3, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 3, 2005 So here is a question. We all know that you are not suppose to bring your own liquor on board the ship. Why? A hotel or resort would never tell you that you could not bring your own liquor. Why does a cruise ship? It is so obvious that they just want your money. It is one thing that really bothers me about cruising. I enjoy going out to the bars as much as the rest of them, but it is nice to be able to make your own drink as well. While in Hawaii earlier this year, we stayed at the Westin Maui where a small, and I mean small, drink in a plastic cup by the pool was $9.00. Having a bottle of rum in our room and some fruit juices was the perfect solution. While drinking by the pool, we would make our own drinks. At night, we would go to the bar and have a drink if we wanted. I am by no means a cheap person, I just don't understand what the big deal is. I would love to hear from other cruisers their opinons on this topic.
Merion_Mom Posted October 3, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 3, 2005 Why? You already know why. :D They want your money. Were you looking for a better, different or more compelling reason? That's it. Period. Beginning, middle and end of story. :D
Nliedel Posted October 3, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 3, 2005 Bottom line it is their house and you gotta pay to party. Thems the rules. Now what I don't get is RCI's stupid e-mail they sent me. I asked them what the policy was regarding wine not sold on the ship and the response was (This may not be an exact quote) that no outside alcohol was allowed and that it would be confiscated, however should I bring my own alcohol there would be a corkage fee. What on earth does that mean? I sent them the e-mail back asking what it meant and never heard back from them. Do I bring along a couple of bottles of good wine and chance it? I can buy a really nice Perrier Jouet for the sailaway for the same price they are charging for Korbel. What do I do here?
glen tev Posted October 3, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 3, 2005 Let me tell you ,what they don't see they don't care about.I brought mini bottles of gin, rum, vodka and teq on voyager in sept.I stuffed them in my shoes in my luggage and had no problems.I agree you can go to any other resort other than a cruise ship and bring whatever you want.Let me ask this i know there are inclusive cruises like raddisson but. 1.Would you be willing to pay say $500 more at the time of booking for all-inclusive cruise including drinks and tips on a RCCL cruise or anyother for that matter(should offer a wrist band like they do at all inclusives say in cancun)either you have the all inclusive package or you don't. Lets here what everyone has to think.
Nliedel Posted October 3, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 3, 2005 Right now I am not in a financial position to sail an all inclusive line like Radisson, Silversea or Seabourn. In ten years, yes. I plan to sail them one day but not till the boys are older.
lrovnan Posted October 3, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 3, 2005 When my husband and I cruised out of Bayonne in September we brought a rolling cooler with us . This contained wine and a few pieces of blue ice. When we went thru security in the port they stopped my husband and made him open the cooler. They could of cared less about the wine they were curious about blue ice. They weren't quite sure what it was. Once they took a look we were ok to proceed. We even rolled the cooler right on the ship without a question. So that pretty much tells you their opinion of the subject, they can care less. AFT_LOVER Posted October 3, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 3, 2005 and we have free drinks from 4-6PM nightly. Have owned our timeshare there since 1998 & it is the same timeframe daily in Hawaii. Up at 5:30am to shower & dress for 6AM buffet breakfast. At the pool or ocean by 8AM til 3PM when we do dinner then 4-6 for all the Mai Tai, Margaraitas, Sea Breezes or Bay Breezes we can put away (one night was 10 each) and then out to the ocean to enjoy the sunset & whales getting the calves ready for bed, as we are ready also after an hour of TV we sleep 10 hours a night easily............ Nliedel Posted October 3, 2005 #9 Share Posted October 3, 2005 All I want is a clear and concise FIRM policy one way or the other. Darn overthinking corporations. I have no problem with a cruiseline taking advantage, within reason, of a captive audience. I buy Movie Theater popcorn too.
stoshb Posted October 3, 2005 #10 Share Posted October 3, 2005 Over the years I have stayed at way too many hotels. I have found a large number also have a no outside liquor policy. Just read the hotel rules. The rule is seldom enforced unless you host a party. Then they want their cut. Oft times their prices for a bottle of room booze make the bar look like the economy option. This whole liquor question is one more example of corporate thinking. Marketing wants to attract more customers, accounting wants to maximize profit, legal wants to minimize risk, and no one cares a whit about the poor smuck who just wants a vacation. All we can do is pick our fights about what is important to us and try to enjoy the rest.

We go there every year too, but do not own a timeshare. I am in real estate, so buying a timeshare is the worst thing you can do in my business. drewdles Posted October 4, 2005 #12 Share Posted October 4, 2005 We were on the Adventure of the Seas back at the end of April and had gone down a day in advanced and stayed at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan (which by the way was nice, but it is more a resort location, nothing much around other than a corner store loaded with Liquor and a SubWay and Ice Cream place). We thought we would pick up some Vodka and Rum and pour it into some water bottles we bought. Well we completely forgot about it until we got the Pier and there was no way to pour this without looking conspicuous. So we said whatever, if they take it they take it, whats $25 or so when you are spending so much for a vacation anyhow. Both bottles went through the XRay machine in backpacks and no one said anything. Either we were lucky or they don't mind too much if you just take a bottle and not lots of bottles ;)
KINGBOBOFTHENORTH Posted October 4, 2005 #13 Share Posted October 4, 2005 Puerto Rican law does not allow the confiscation of liquor bought in duty free stores on the island, including right at the port terminal. So they won't try to stop you with liquor purchases made in San Juan. Keep in mind that at other ports if they confiscate your bottles of whatever, they DO give them back on the last night of the cruise. They don't keep them or throw them away. starlite713 Posted October 4, 2005 #15 Share Posted October 4, 2005 We have been on 15 cruises and my Grandmother brings a regular size bottle of rum and a regular size bottle of vodca everytime we sail. She even brings a 6 pack of coke. They could really care less if you bring you're own bottles. They don't advertise it because yes, they want you're money but they won't say a thing if you bring you're own. Trust me.:)

YYC F/A Posted October 4, 2005 #17 Share Posted October 4, 2005 We took several bottles of wine and champagne and even when we asked if we could pay corkage, they tried to confiscate them in SJU on an NCL cruise. We were held at the security for about half an hour whilst they tried in vain to find the head bar steward who would issue us a receipt to keep them in ships bond/store til end of trip. Finally, we heard them starting the ships lifeboat drill and we were missing it. I kicked off, and we were allowed to board, but so worried about getting into trouble was the security manager that we were 'snuck' on board (luggage and wine and all) through the ships cargo entrance, past the kitchens and then into the public areas! All for a few bottles of wine/champagne that we had agreed to pay corkage for! RCI on the other hand seem to be more laid back. I've taken liquor on board both at embarkation and at ports of call downroute. Downroute, people with obvious packages of liquor were asked to check them til cruise end, but those with it in backpacks were allowed to pass freely. drewdles Posted October 6, 2005 #18 Share Posted October 6, 2005 I have to add, while we brought our own bottles on board, we ended up leaving them in the room for the next guest since our room attendent didn't want them. We never got around to using them....

gobnu1 Posted October 6, 2005 #20 Share Posted October 6, 2005 If they choose not enforce the rule then that's their problem. We walked on at Cape Liberty with a case of beer plus wine. Did not try and hide it at all. they looked at it and never said a word.

PSCruiser Posted October 6, 2005 #23 Share Posted October 6, 2005 OK, I'll ask the easier question: Does anyone have a story where they were denied bringing aboard ANY alcoholic beverage, under ANY circumstances, at the ORIGINAL PORT of embarkation? If so, what port, what line, when, and what were the circumstances?
Nliedel Posted October 6, 2005 #24 Share Posted October 6, 2005 No, you will not be denied boarding on any ship, any port or any line that I am aware of. Just your booze might be.
