Wednesday 16th October 1946... "Maiden" Voyage of the RMS Queen Elizabeth, Southampton (departed 2pm) - New York with 2,288 passengers?

The crossing took 4 days, 16 hours, 18 minutes (average speed 27.99 knots).

Thank you Jim :)

If war hadn't prevented it, can you imagine the celebrations that must have been in the back of Sir Percy Bates's mind for 1940, to mark the 100th year of operation of the "Cunard Line" (as it became known). Had RMS Queen Elizabeth entered service as planned that year.

"1840-1940; Cunard has the world's fastest liner, and now the world's largest liner"...

(or similar, I would imagine)

(Such a pity he died on the very day that Queen Elizabeth set sail on her "maiden" voyage)

Best wishes to you.

The correct answer!

RMS Queen Elizabeth makes her maiden voyage as a commercial passenger liner- not a troopship! Only later would she be joined by Queen Mary.

Otherwise, all of you know your stuff! :)

Now, if I could just sell my builders' certificate for her. It's time for a new care taker after 20 years.

This is NOT a solicitation to purchase, just thought you'd like to see it. Note Sir Stephen Piggot's, of John Brown, signature on it.

Perhaps those on board the current Queen Elizabeth on the anniversary can tell us whether it gets a mention.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but having such a good time here on the Queen Elizabeth I forgot to post!

The Captain did mention the anniversary in his noon day announcement and this morning here in Cadiz he has even mentioned that today is Trafalgar Day.

I have been very impressed with Captain Aseem Hashmi, first time I have come across him and he is very personable and visible around the ship.

We're generally in the Commodore Club at 17.00 every evening, in fact we are in there now! Failing that keep you eye out for a loud, tall northern bloke with no hair, but don't confuse me with Duncan though, he can dance, I can't!
