We did the cruise from Hawaii to Mexico last year on the Legends. Flew into Honolulu 2 days early. Got to see alot of Oahu. Boarded the boat & 1st went to Kauai. We rented cars on all the islands(piece of cake). This way we could see & do as much as we wanted. We then had 2 days on Maui & 2 days at Hawaii. Why cruise? We got to see 4 islands & only unpacked 1 1/2 times. Sailed past the valcano at night. We love to cruise & this way you are not tied down to one place. If you go to an island & fly to another it's alot more hassle. The 5 days at sea were very relaxing & fun.

depends on what I wanted to do. If I wanted to see/do things on the same island then I would go land however, if I wanted more of a sampling of hawaii I would do a cruise.

Depends on the time of year, too. We made the mistake of doing a land vacation on Kuai in August, and I almost died from the heat/humidity. On board ship you have a breeze when the ship's moving, and you have an air conditioned room. Depending on where you stay on land, a lot of the rooms in Hawaii still aren't air conditioned; they have ceiling fans.

Also, you get to see more of the islands and decide where you want to go on your land vacation the next time!!!!

I would do a repositioning cruise from Hawaii to Vancouver. I live within driving distance from Vancouver, and I'd rather have 5 port days at the beginning of the cruise and then 4 days to lay back and relax on the way home. I'd probably do a couple of extra days pre-cruise .

Have you been to Hawaii before?
Do you want to see native Hawaii?
Do you snorkel?
Do you shop?
Do you like sea days?
Have you cruised before?
Do you surf?
What do you want in a vacation?????!!!!!!
Throw me a bone for crying out loud. I have cruised to and from Hawaii and been there lots of times. I have seen most of the islands. Please help me help you! Are you planning something or is this just for a topic cause you are bored?

The islands all have different things to offer. If you just want a sample of each then a cruise may be the way to go. If you really want to get the feel for each island you need to do a land vacation and spend several days on each of the major islands.

Donuts, is there anything they can't do....

Yes

No never

I want to see Hawaii.

Do you snorkel?
A little but no big deal others with me might not want to snorkel.

Do you shop?
Not really, I can do that at home.

Do you like sea days?

I do but others it will be there first cruise if we cruise.

Have you cruised before?
6 times and I love it and need to talk everyone else into it.

Do you surf?
No

What do you want in a vacation?????!!!!!!
Sight seeing. The volcanos, ect....

I'm leaning towards the American Flag ship if we cruise NCL Aloha, due to we can fly into Hawaii stay a few precruise days and I like the overnights this ship has listed. I also think it might be an easy way to see most of Hawaii and get a taste of the area. Othgers will not do a little plane to island hpo once we are there.

Are you planning something or is this just for a topic cause you are bored?

I'm Planning!!!!! Looking at next spring and hoping to get a few friends and family as I've never done a cruise with more then just me and a friend or my mother.

Any suggestions you can send my way it will be much appreciated!

Thanks

My vote is land vacation. There was a recent discussion on this topic. Here is the link and my comments, which I hope are helpful to you in deciding.

We were there just a month ago. Our best vacation yet! I think the only way to do it is by cruise. Otherwise it is a hassle to island hop and costs a lot more. Here is my review, let me know if you have any other questions!

Take a cruise first, visit all the islands then pick your favourite and go back for a land tour.

That's my excuse for working my way through the Caribbean

Do not get me wrong I love Hawaii and I love to cruise 14 cruises (with 3 more planned) but, to do Hawaii you must do a land resort. Pcik a hotel and do 2 islands(it is not expensive to jet( and I mean jet boeing 737 are usually used, not prop planes to another island,) such as Maui. We stayed at the Hawaii Hilton Village in Oahu and at the Hyatt Regency in Maui, there is no way you can see, relax and do all the things and try the Pan-pacific food on a cruise ship. If you want to cruise there are a lot of places to cruise too just not Hawaii

Judy F: Book a Cruise to see Hawaii. This wayyou get to see a lot of the islands. Pick a cruise that goes by the volcano at night, it is a sight not to be misses. The lava is bright red and and falling in globs into the ocean. Best to rent a car in most ports. That way you stop when you want to and stay longerwere you want.
There is so much to see that a tour kind of limits wat you do. All the islands are differentin climate and attitude, all good.
A land base vacation will limit what you see and you see to one island. If you stay on one island and then move to another you lose a whole day traveling, Which I don't like.
Hawaii, The big island, I have only been around the south end. There are lava pools for snorkling, pools and channels open to the ocean. they are warmer the the ocean.
There is a park that has a very large pond that has stone step around it. The water is around 98 degrees and is heated by valcanic action under ground. It is open at one end to the ocean and has fish in it.
The park with lava trees is interesting.
Got to go for now. Will post more later.

I'm planning a Hawaii cruise in 2005 on NCL. Since they have now re-flagged their ship, NCL can sail inter-island cruises without including an international port. Add a pre/post hotel stay, and you've got the best of both worlds.

I would love to do a cruise to Hawaii. I think I would plan to go early and do a short land vacation first (3 or 4 days) and then set sail on the Serenade of the Seas (1 of my favorite ships).

Thanks for the great reply's. Lots of great ideas, seems it's split between land and cruise.

Thanks

If you think you may return there some day, Then take a cruise. If not you may want to stay on land. Good luck on deciding. let me know if you want more info on an island to stay on.

I also found a very interesting website called www.wizardpub.com

It is for the Ultimate Hawaii Guidebook series. Of real interest is the aerial photo section of the resorts. You can't get into the review section w/out a guidebook purchase/password, but you can see the aerial photos of the resorts, which will tell you what the beach looks like there (sandy/clear, rocky, or not even on beach). Also, on some of the islands the buildings are #d so if you book a hotel you may ask for a specific building # or location.

I found this site when pseudo planning/fantasizing about a trip to kauai in the next couple of years.

I've been to Hawaii several times (total of 25-30 days) most recently earlier this month. I've never cruised there but have done several Caribbean cruises.

A cruise and a land vacation are completely different experiences, one isn't necessarily better or more expensive than the other, but they are completely different experiences and it really depends on what you want.

If your main purpose is to visit Hawaii, IMO it takes a good four days (per island) to really do that, I would do a land vacation.

If your main purpose is to take a cruise, and seeing Hawaii is #1 on your list of places to see while cruising, I would cruise.
