Just remember that black sand beaches are HOT!!!. I spent a couple days in Santorini Greece known for its famous black sand volcanic beaches. You couldn't walk barefoot at all unless in the surf. Very hard to lay just on a towel. So be prepared.

Rent a car
I agree, On all of the Hawaiian ports including the big Island we rented cars and were able to do two -three times the Excursions for a fraction of the price.
