g_car Posted June 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Leaving 6/19 on the 7 day Caribbean Princess Western cruise wife and I plus 3 other couples from Wilmington DE, leaving the kids home alone :-) BTW – all the wives are RNs who work or have worked in Labor and Delivery so if any pregnant women on board we’re set – hehehe. Quick question what’s the best way to get 3 or 4 bottles of wine on board at embarkation. Can I just bring them on board with my carry on? THANKS! sue d. miller Posted June 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Yes, or in ziplocks in your luggage. Princess allows, wine, champagne, and beer to board. No hard liquor!!! Fellow nurse, here!! Cruisindad Posted June 17, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 17, 2004 g_car, Greetings to a fellow First-Stater! (born in Wilmington, raised in Hockessin) We sailed on the Caribbean Princess on May 22, and my wife and I each carried a bottle of wine in our carryons, for in-room consumption. BTW, my sister is a nurse, still at Christiana hospital, I think. Enjoy the cruise! Tim and Joann
Toto2Kansas Posted June 17, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 17, 2004 NO problem at all carrying wine onboard Princess. I would suggest putting it in your carry on or just carrying it. Yes, you could put it in your checked bagged, but then there is that slight change that it might get broken and then you would really have a mess on your hands. If you decide to place it in your checked luggage, for your sake and the sake of other luggage near it, please wrap it in bubble wrap and then place it in ziplock bag(s) just in case. They are not gentle with the luggage and this way if for some reason it may break, you won't ruin your clothes and anyone elses that it comes in contact with. Princess does not confiscate wine that you carry on. Have a great cruise. GloriaF Posted June 17, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 17, 2004 As Sue mentioned, it is easiest to put the bottles in a large ziploc bags in your luggage. There is no problem taking it in your carry-on, but why not let the baggage handlers carry the weight instead of you? Maybe hand carry a bottle or 2 for sailaway, as you may not have your luggage by then. spongerob Posted June 17, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Just carry it on. I wouldn't put anything breakable in luggage that the longshoremen are going to toss around. That's just a disaster waiting to happen. You will not have any problems bringing your wine aboard. Northender Posted June 17, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 17, 2004 We bought our wine in FLL and had them quadruple bag it. Then we took our beach towels and roll wrapped it and put it in carryon. When we got to the dock the Lshorman said he would take it, we told him what it was and he promised it would not break. It didn't. There was a sign that said these folks work for Princess so we took a chance. The carryon was also padded with swimsuits, etc. But, no problem to just put it through screening and carry on either. mimi2 Posted June 17, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 17, 2004 There is no problem with bringing wine on board. We usually bring a bottle from home in a carry on and buy some in the Islands. No one bothers you for wine. Wine is no bargain in the Islands though. It's just nice to have in the room. Have fun.
pattie63 Posted June 17, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Wrap them in bubble wrap and carry them in a large knapsack. You'll save your hands alot of pain if you use the knapsack!! I would recommend stopping at Publix on 17th Street (take a taxi from the airport -- the driver will know where it is) and picking up a few bottles if you don't want to carry them from home. Cost of taxi, with pretty long stop at Publix, was $21 when we did this in April (we also picked up mixers for our pre-ordered vodka and rum). sgilmore Posted June 17, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 17, 2004 We have brought wine onboard several times and it is not a problem. We have put it in both carryon and suitcase. It has never been broken. The best thing to do is bring it to the dining room. They will charge a $10 corkage fee. It is much less expensive than buying their bottle. Half the time, they never even charged us the corkage! cleacat Posted June 17, 2004 #11 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I recently received a Cruise Critic e-letter and it covered alcohol policies. It says Princess will not allow wine at embarkation, only if purhased at ports. So which is correct? Guest KateKathy Posted June 17, 2004 #12 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I saw that link also and questioned it - I'm a TA - just got back 5/17 from Sun Princess and am going on the Golden 6/27. My DH has a wine cellar and loves taking wine on-board. We have never had a problem. Hope we don't this time also. (I did take wine onboard in San Francisco and did many people who had come from a NAPA. Trevoli Posted June 17, 2004 #13 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I had a friend who smuggled bourbon aboard in his carry on - he put it in a Listerine bottle!! I've brought vodka aboard in just a regular water bottle. In recent years, though, I just bring champagne with me in my carry on. T

sgilmore Posted June 18, 2004 #16 Share Posted June 18, 2004 I just got off of the Royal, I brought wine in my suitcase, as well as back from the port of Bordeaux, France. It do it every cruise. If you couldn't, why would they have a corkage?? You are just not supposed to bring in hard alcohol, however, I have done that too!
cruise_newbie Posted June 18, 2004 #17 Share Posted June 18, 2004 can I ask you what is a "corkage"?
sgilmore Posted June 18, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 18, 2004 Corkage is a fee the cruise line charges to open and serve a bootle of wine you bring onboard. You can do the same thing is most nice restaurants everyowhere.
cruiserdru Posted June 18, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 18, 2004 If you take a bottle of your own wine to the dining room, the waiter removes the cork - hence, a corkage fee. Many restaurants also have this policy. Princess may charge a $10 corkage fee. It depends on the waiter.
Froufie Posted June 18, 2004 #20 Share Posted June 18, 2004 I am actually looking forward to my "wine shopping trip" in FLL - don't think we will bring any in luggage travelling from Canada! Any good california wine suggestions? Will the liquor stores carry wines from all over? (e.g. Chile, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, etc). Toto2Kansas Posted June 18, 2004 #21 Share Posted June 18, 2004 Froufie, There is a great wine selection across from Embassy Suites at the Publix, also a very large liqour store across the side street. Both have extensive wine offerings with hundreds of different wines from almost everywhere. Your choices will be endless. I am sure that you will find it easy to 'stock up' before you head to your (OUR) ship. LOL See you there! ISABELLA Posted June 18, 2004 #22 Share Posted June 18, 2004 Three weeks ago we were on Star Princess and bought French brandy and wine in Cannes. Walked right thru security. Nobody said a word.

So which is correct?

I saw that too... but the policy has always been wine at embarkation is ok, so I think it was just a misprint. Most lines allow wine and champagne when boarding, but draw the line at hard liquor. But on my last cruise (Celebrity), we brought back liquor from one of the ports (as did those around us), and no one said a word, in spite of the fact that it was officially against their policy. Rare geoherb Posted June 18, 2004 #24 Share Posted June 18, 2004 When we bought wine in Seattle before our cruise on the Star Princess last summer, the wine shop had a nice box that held three bottles and made them very easy to carry. I also received a padded wine carrying case that holds two bottles when renewing my subscription to a magazine. It came in handy on our last cruise. I bought a few bottles in my hometown to take on that cruise. The carrying case fit into my carryon bag. My partner brought another couple of bottles in his carryon that we wrapped well in bubble wrap.
