MetalManCPA Posted July 25, 2006 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2006 If I try to bring one bottle of rum onboard with me, are there any risks other than having the bottle confisgated? One $15 bottle of rum would last an entire cruise for me. I know Princess doesn't allow booze (other than wine or champagne) to be brought onboard. But, I've strapped myself enough financially on this cruise already (and I haven't even left port yet!! [8/7 on the Crown]), so I would like to save a few bucks. Anyways, is it wise to try to pack a bottle, or is it just not worth "that feeling" upon boarding when trying to sneak something in?

Bettyboop66 Posted July 25, 2006 #3 Share Posted July 25, 2006 You can definetly carry it in your carry on bag without any problem. Enjoy your cruise.
Pam in CA Posted July 25, 2006 #4 Share Posted July 25, 2006 Gotta love it. Another "I've read the Rules but they don't apply to me" post. Yes, you can bring a bottle on board but then you can probably get away with driving 15mph over the speed limit too. It's all about the enforcement. Doesn't make it right. Lynda90 Posted July 25, 2006 #5 Share Posted July 25, 2006 You can also pack it in your luggage. They won't confisgate it.

I know that's the truth of what I'm asking. And I never said the rule doesn't apply to me. Of course it does, and if I bring on a bottle, I'm breaking the rules. And it doesn't make it right. But I personally find this particular rule nothing more than economic gain for the cruise line, and I've already given them $5,000 plus (with more to come). I see no safety issue in bringing a bottle of rum in order to save me $100+ dollars. I'm not a big drinker, and I've already broken the bank for this cruise. Toto2Kansas Posted July 25, 2006 #7 Share Posted July 25, 2006 You can purchase it from room service for only a few dollars more, won't break any rules and you will have a liter bottle of rum to enjoy for your voyage without the flack!

Curious - how much is purchasing a bottle from the bar? Is it THAT much more than a normal liquor store, or is the premium you pay not all that bad? A Sixth? Posted July 25, 2006 #9 Share Posted July 25, 2006 You can purchase it from room service for only a few dollars more, won't break any rules and you will have a liter bottle of rum to enjoy for your voyage without the flack! Wait a minute. There have been posts saying that Princess no longer does that at a reduced rate. (The 32.00 bucks for a litre of rum or what ever it cost) Now they'll charge you their bar shot price, 33 oz = 33 shots @ 3.73 ea or what ever the rate is. We always took advantage of having a bottle of Princess Rum purchased for our cabin and have heard that we can't do that anymore What's the truth? sharpie13 Posted July 25, 2006 #10 Share Posted July 25, 2006 Recently we returned from shore and security at the gate took the bottles I purchased on shore, passed them through the x-ray machine and handed them back to me. I was sort of shocked as I expected them to tag them for the last night of the cruise per the written policy but they really didn't seem to care. mncruizr Posted July 25, 2006 #11 Share Posted July 25, 2006 I've done some research on this because I leave this Saturday from Whittier on the Diamond. I plan on bringing my own scotch and stowing it in my checked luggage. The liquor they sell that I saw was small bottles (375ml) versus the typical 1 liter or 750 and the price is a few bucks more than a 750 in a typical liquor store. The selection is small and yes, they do include some mix in at that price, but I prefer my own brand. To my knowledge you cannot purchase a bottle from the bar. Have fun and drink up. You also forgot to mention how nice it is to have a relaxing drink on your own balcony versus having to go to a bar.
wspatton Posted July 25, 2006 #12 Share Posted July 25, 2006 I wonder why it is that Princess doesn't have a clearly stated policy in its materials about how you can go about getting a bottle of liquor from either the atrium bar or from room service? I think the fact of the matter is that even though they may sell the whole bottles, they really don't want you to know about it, so that most folks will buy the mixed drinks. And also, what is the difference between wine and distilled spirits? You can't tell me it's because the wine is for meals, because there are a lot of people who enjoy a beer or a scotch & soda with their dinner. I agree with a poster in another thread who observed that this is just Carnival corporate trying to squeeze a little more out of its passengers. idssms Posted July 25, 2006 #14 Share Posted July 25, 2006 Beware If you get caught smuggling booze.. Its 7 days in the bottom of the ship shoveling coal. Its not air conditioned down there either. The confiscators wait at the plank to find smugglers!! Good luck

caviargal Posted July 25, 2006 #17 Share Posted July 25, 2006 They have just changed their policy on wine as well (it is no longer permitted to bring any aboard) so it will be interesting to see if it is enforced.

We brought on a bottle of rum packed in our luggage (it was the plastic bottle, so no breakage issues) and it was no problem. We also purchased 7 bottles in St. Maarten, fully expecting ship security to box them up and hold them until the end of the cruise, but that didn't happen. Actually I was sort of dismayed at the fact that we had to find room to store them in our cabin, when it would have been more space efficient to have Princess store them.:)

Now you can't bring any aboard?:( I called Princess today and they confirmed it was OK to bring wine/champagne on board. I asked about purchasing rum bottles onboard, and the woman said they were available for purchase by the bottle at the bar, but of course she didn't have any prices for me (and she giggled about it too)
Merion_Mom Posted July 25, 2006 #21 Share Posted July 25, 2006 MetalMan: Go to your local liquor store. Buy a bottle of rum in the plastic bottle. Take it home. Wrap it in bubble wrap and tape it closed. Put the bubble-wrapped bottle in a large ziploc bag and zip it closed. Place in the center of your largest checked suitcase. Go to your port of embarkation. Give your luggage to the porter. Tip the porter. Checkin. Embark. Get luggage in cabin. Open largest suitcase. Open package of rum. Enjoy your cruise! Not sure where you got this info, but you are incorrect. And just so others know it is not just my word, here is the statement from the Princess website. The Onboard ExperienceQuestion: What is the alcohol policy onboard Princess Cruises? Answer: We kindly request that you do not bring alcoholic beverages (other than wine and/or champagne) onboard for consumption. Alcoholic beverages that are purchased duty free from the ship's gift shop or at ports of call will be collected for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage. A member of our Security Staff will be at the gangway to assist with the storage of your alcoholic beverage purchases.

Actually, some of the Princess cruisers who just received their docs for upcoming cruises were advised of this with an insert in the documentation. There is another thread covering just this issue. Websites rarely are kept current and last time I looked, Princess still had not posted photos of actual cabin categories on Crown.

Let me put it this way. I received our documents two days ago, and there is no mention whatsoever of this. I honestly think if they did change this rule so drastically, the CC forum would be up and arms about it. And except for a few people that seem a bit confused, I have not heard one word from those I know just returning from Princess cruises. So, I am going to give it a try in a few weeks and will let you know what happens. Bet cha a dollar it is still OK to bring wine and champagne onboard. ;) :)
