LMHSRN Posted May 7, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Ok, here is the low down. When you are purchasing "adult beverages" in ports, carry in back on the ship in a bag. They scan the bags but do not take liquid refreshments from you. They WILL make you turn it in if it is obvious what it is. Example: You come back on board carryng a cardboard carrier with 4 bottles, they will take this from you until last night of cruise. If you have those same 4 bottles in a bag/tote, they will not take it from you... Ship's staff told me that they will not go into your bags, but will take anything that they can actually see. headhurt Posted May 7, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Hmmmm...that is interesting. I carted two bottles of the hard stuff on the ship from Coz. They scanned my bags, but didn't say anything about the booze. That's handy info to know. Keep it in the short grass, y'all! tdms1324 Posted May 7, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 7, 2004 When I went through the scanner, the security person mumbled..deposit your alcohol at the table. On the other side of the room they had a single person trying to tag and store liquor. Neither person was paying close attention. I fully believe, if you keep walking without stopping at the other table, nobody would notice. It is usually very crowded and chaotic. However, my paranoid husband, promptly took MY booze over to the table for confiscation!! We actually waited in line to give up MY stuff!! I think the scanners pick up the glass containers because you could not see into my bag and last time I came back from Cozumel, I had a big glass bottle of Vanilla and they mumbled the same thing about depositing the alcohol at the table. 1/25/04 Inspiration 4/25/04 Inspiration Part II
Cotton Posted May 7, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Yeah, I just kept on walking after the guy said to leave the booze on the table. They're so busy, they don't really notice. kujobie Posted May 7, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Ditto on the "keep walking" trick. Worked for me a few weeks ago. The x-rays can "see" your booze in your bag. The scanner told me to check my booze, I then proceeded to walk by the table that was checking it. Of course, as someone stated, you might not get away with this if you're carrying a cardboard case. tjevans Posted May 7, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Of course, there are also some stores that do not give you the alcohol, but deliver it to the ship. That's what happened to us in Grand Cayman. <applet code="countdown.class" CODEBASE="http://*************/java-sys" width="203" height="25"> <param name="font" value="lcdb0"> <param name="year" value=2004> <param name="month" value=4> <param name="day" value=18> <param name="hour" value=18> </applet> Carnival Conquest 4/18/
Cotton Posted May 8, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 8, 2004 Whoa! And did you actually GET your booze later? I'm not that trusting. If a vendor said they'd send it to the ship, I'm have to say give me my money back. If it gets delivered to the ship and is HELD by the cruiseline until debarkment, how do you really know if it's on the ship or not????????? selucrey Posted May 8, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 8, 2004 Grand Cayman was the only place our alcohol was delivered, and yes,we received it.Everywhere else it was cash and carry.GC is not like some standard "cruise ports".Very British you know! As for getting it onboard,we carried it in a tote bag;it was scanned and crewman said check alcohol;I pulled out ONE bottle (of four) checked it,and carried the rest onboard. No Problem Mon! LMHSRN Posted May 8, 2004 Author #12 Share Posted May 8, 2004 As long as they do not actually see the booze, you are home free. I, too, have surrendered ony one bottle when told to check the booze after scanning. You are correct, they are too busy and really don't care one way or another. As for stores that deliver to ship, that is not mandatory. That is just a service they offer. The cruise lines guarantee delivery if it is from a recommended store. Just keep your recepit with you until you actually have the booze in your possession at the end of the cruise. One of the couples in our group had their liquor taken from out in the hall when they delivered it on the last day and the cruise line made it good. LMHSRN Posted May 9, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted May 9, 2004 Don't forget that on the VI cruise, you are allowed 7 Liters per adult person. 1 from San Juan, 1 from St. Maarten and 5 from the Virgin Islands as long as 1 of the 5 is from the islands. We brought back 16 Liters......... We are set for a long, long time........... KTW35 Posted May 9, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 9, 2004 It is a who/what/where/when/why situation. I can only say that last May we sailed on Triumph and purchased several bottles and carried them aboard in BAGS and noone even blinked.Stacked to the side we did notice MANY boxes that contained alky that people purchased. So I can say for 100% certainty that on that day and ship in St.Thomas the ONLY alky that was being "held" was pre-boxed alky because it was easier to handle and they didn't give a poop about bagged alky. So, BAG IT. Since We Cruised On Triumph. Until We Cruise On Glory.
Mar Posted May 10, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 10, 2004 I believe all lines have tightened up regarding people bringing booze back to the ship. We are Pepsi people while ship is Coke products so we had some Pepsi and Mt. Dew bottles next to hubby's RUM. Spotted during xray of backpack and asked to remove "booze"-no clue HOW he kept a straight face but hubby told them over and over he bought Pepsi products because the ship only used Coke Products and went on and on...... I was ready to slap it down and be done but he kept on and on so I just walked away!!!!!!!! Shop owners told us to try spring breakers tricks and use "other" bottles and thus NO questions. We put MORE than our fair share on the sail and sign so what we bring on board in ports is next to nothing. The cruise lines really do seem to be cracking down and IMO it's not the nickle and dime people who still put a major wad on the card but it's the people who attempt to brink along coolers full or cases and consume in public areas. My personal rule is any booze we bring MUST stay in cabin/balcony-drink anywhere else on ship? Put it on Sail and Sign card! I think this is fair to cruiseline and passengers. LMHSRN Posted May 11, 2004 Author #16 Share Posted May 11, 2004 You are correct. We also had a very large s&s bill from adult beverages. But, when it came right down to it, we always enjoy a glass of wine or small cocktail before dinner on the balcony. Emme Posted May 11, 2004 #17 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Whoah! Hold on Nellie! I'm a bit confused! I know we're allowed to bring back liquor so why is yours being confiscated? I'm sure I'm just missing something. Are they being taken when you try to board the ship? HUH! Confused chick here who is going to try to bring back as much rum as possible!!! Knights on the Beach Posted May 11, 2004 #18 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Sure, you're allowed to bring it back, but most cruiselines (including Carnival) will typically collect it from you when you get back on the ship in ports. They will tag it and will then deliver it to your cabin the last day of the cruise. Of course, there are always exceptions . . .
