For all those sailing in 2007, I've come to the conclusion that it is impossible to guess when the foliage will be best. I followed this web site and reported to my roll call group about the foliage outlook from my Sunday paper. I live in NJ and I was starting to feel bad because it looked like it was going to be too late for the foliage on our Oct 16th cruise and I would also probably miss the leaves changing color in NJ. I even joked to the people from CA at my table who had a 6:00 flight home that they could come home with us and rake all afternoon to their heart's content. Then my husband would drive them to the airport. We were suprised when we got home that the leaves had not changed when we were gone. Two weeks later (early Nov.), we had fabulous foliage in NJ. Quebec had peaked a month earlier.
A lot of the trees along the coast line and in Acadia Park are evergreens. So for those of you planning to walk around in the port towns, you will not see a lot of foliage. If you really want to see colors, I would check on the internet for fall colors before I left, try to guess where the colors are at their peak, and book an excursion that includes a drive through the countryside to see the foliage. You are always welcome to come to my house on your way home. |

Hey Egg....I was over on this board from the Seabourn board....they have a cruise down the Eastern Seaboard in October and November that I'm thinking about for 2008...and came across your post. How dear of you to extend that invitation! That is just so nice.
Thanks for the good info on the leaves. I'm from CA also....so I'm clueless about the timing! Jane

As for the offer to rake leaves - LOL!! Thanks, but no thanks. Contrary to what you see on TV we do have other trees besides Palms. We get a lot of Falling leaves in CA just not the changing colors - they get blown off the trees while they are still green due to the Devil Santa Ana winds we get in early Fall. When I get lazy - I leave them on the ground and hope the winds will blow them into my neighbors yard -- Too bad they do the same thing !!

I second that. We're in RI and peak time can be anywhere in the 2nd to 3rd weeks of October. Usualy around Columbus Day weekend and a little after.

This is a good website to look at some recent historical dates of fall foliage color:
http://www.foliagenetwork.com/reports/northeast_us/ We did this cruise 2 weeks ago on Oct 15th and we were too early but it was a strange year. I would probably book this same cruise or the week before if I was to do it again.

I don't know if everyone can use names that might be the same, but it seems to me there was a CaliforniaLiving on the South American boards having to do with Golden Princess 3/19/07 cruise. Is that you? Anyway, my sil and I are going to book this cruise too. I am watching the prices because of my experience with the last cruise where they droped the price $700 the day after we paid in full. Hmmm. Anyway, I would very much be interested in getting together for tours. I (not intentionally) ended up arrangeing tours for 8 in most of the ports we visited and they were wonderful, private, not from the ship (great guides, great prices, great itineraries) although I have seen enough ruins to last me. LOL. I have no infomation about these ports, and have never been. Any help, suggestions, and whatever other information out there would be greatly appreciated. Also, did you book through NCL, an agent, or one of the discount companies (which one)? My name is Marianne and my SIL name is Judy. Yours? Hope to hear from you soon. m.loughman@sbcglobal.net For anyone that wants to send info direct. Thanks again, and looking forward to the "colored leafs" we hope. Marianne |

We live in PA and the colors begin to turn the 2nd week of Oct.
We did a Canada/New England cruise a few years during the 3rd week of Oct. The fall colors were beautiful.

Best fall foliage - End of September to Mid-October. Basically those 3 weeks.
That's assuming we don't have a major rain storm that knocks all the leaves down. We do get the outer bands every once in awhile from hurricanes that are going out to sea. Once one of those storms passes by, the leaves are shot. 40mph winds just knocks off everything off the trees. The past few years we've had a few brush-bys with tropical systems. But no direct hits - yet....

We had an unusually warm autumn this past year and my area in central MA didn't peak until Halloween and early November. This photo was taken at a cemetary near my home and I marked it 11/3 and this was peak.
