Locks on Luggage?
Just wondering if we are allowed to put locks on our luggage when boarding the ship.
I know when we fly, we'll have to leave the locks off but can we put the locks back on when we board the ship?

You can use TSA approved locks available at Target, walmart etc for both the ship AND the plane, I wouldn't leave my luggage unlocked anywhere!!!

We always use the plastic zip ties you can find in any hardware store. These are usually in the electrical section. We put them on for flying and the cruise. TSA can easily get into the suitcase for inspection, but it disuades others from doing this. Bring extras for the return flight and don't forget to pack a small pair of scissors or nail trimmers to cut them when you get to your cabin. Most suitcase locks all use the same key, so they provide little, if any security. We have never had a problem checking zip tied luggage at the airport or at the pier. When TSA does open the bag, they leave a form letter inside and usually re-seal the bag for us.

We purchased TSA Approved locks at Target - I think the brand is called TravelSentry. When we checked our bag, they asked if it was locked, then looked at the lock and said - "smart girl, TSA Approved. Have a safe trip!"
I would MOST DEFINITELY lock your bag when you check it with the porter. Don't forget to pack ALL your valuables in your carry on bag, as well as medications if you need them.

Great suggestions, everyone! I will look for the TSA approved locks! That'll keep people from digging through my suitcase and parading around in my underware!

I wouldn't travel without locking my luggage. We use the TSA combination locks that we got at Wal-Mart. I think they are Travel Sentry also.
A friend had all her shoes stolen from her suitcase because she had no locks on it. I know that someone wanting to steal can do so even with the lock, but it might deter some people.

I use the TSA locks too. I got me some pink colored one's so my locks stand out a little too. I refuse to fly without locking, someone can cut those zip ties if they want in, but at least with the locks, TSA can get in if they want but unless someone else has the right key they cant without cutting the lock. I have used the locks that come with the suitcase when boarding the ship and leaving the ship and had things come up missing, they are too easy to open, heck I can pick one of those.. LOL. I have tried picking my TSA lock and not been able so far, but nice to know how if I misplace my keys.. LOL

We always lock our bags before giving to porters.
TSA locks - if anyone knows the secret of opening let me know. I had my bags searched in May 2006 on a flight and the inspector put a TSA lock back on it even though I didn't have one! Finding someone to open bag was a challenge.

You can use any kind of lock you want. Even on airplanes! If they need to, they will cut the lock off. On the ship--there are no TSA restrictions, so lock your bags before you let them out of your sight! Keep any valuables WITH YOU--do not give that stuff to the porters!!!!
Lock your bags before you place them in the hallway prior to departure at the end of your cruise!
Lock everything--trust no one!!!!!!

We have the TSA locks that have the 3 number combination on them rather than a key. Solves the problem of someone else having a key to fit them. Only the airport officials can open them with their security key, not someone roaming the halls the night before departure. Ofcourse then there is the problem of not having your glasses on to see the numbers.
