Does anyone have any idea how far it is from the airport to the Kensington area of London? How much could I expect to pay for a taxi? Thanks

Look into the Gatwick Express http://www.gatwickexpress.com/ to Victoria Station (approx 30 minutes) and then consider a cab, tube or bus.

Now I'm cross - I posted a reply to you and it just turned into a white page and disappeared. If you need a car there is a company called airportcars.co.uk who will charge around £60 for this journey. The Gatwick Express goes from Gatwick to Victoria in about 30mins. It leaves every 15mins and costs about £15 each for a single ticket. There, now lets just hope you actually get this information this time!!

Gatwick Express plus cab is the way to go, IMHO.

Back in early Nov., we did Victoria Station (right near our hotel) to Gatwick and it was VERY easy, even with ALL our luggage. We also did the subways from Victoria the night before (without luggage) and they're also easy - you can get to anywhere from Victoria, Kensington too. Upon arriving at Gatwick airport, we have to catch the monorail to our American airlines terminal (come in on Gatwick Express to South terminal and take monorail to North terminal or vice versa). The Gatwick Express runs every 1/2 hour and takes about 35 minutes. There are 1st class and 2nd class tickets and we chose 2nd class for a short trip. There's a lot of storage space for luggage but we chose an area where we could sit in the nice lounge chairs (with tables) and also watch our luggage. When the 4 of us bought our tickets, they gave us a special 2 for 1 group rate of 7.5 pounds each instead of the normal 15 pounds each. And, they serve drinks and chips for a price (cash only) on the trip - you can also buy tickets on the train itself, cash or credit card. We were told a taxi would have cost us 75 pounds and would have take over an hour.
You can easily walk out in the street from Victoria station and hail a taxi - a tight fit with luggage for more the 2 people - we did it with 4 from Paddington Station to our hotel near Victoria. Also, you could take the tube from Victoria to the Kensington station stop - it's 3 stops down. However, the tube would require carrying your luggage aboard and then walking from the station to your hotel or catching a taxi from there. Tube tickets run from 2 pounds each for a 1-way ticket (I think) to 5 pounds for a 24-hour pass.
