Wow, just be prepared. Don't let sea sickness ruin your trip. Some cruises I have to stay on the pills everyday and somtimes I don't. It depends on the seas and the size of the ship.

I bring bonine, dramamine chewable(faster acting I think) and meclizine. I use the dramamine if the Meclizine doesn't work. I don't get drowsy with the meclizine and it is a 12 hour pill.

I tried the wrist bands when I was pregnant and they didn't work for me.

I take the first pill before I leave the house.

Default Welcome!

Welcome to Cruise Critic! Sea sickness (or at least the fear of getting seasick) is a common topic on this message board. Read this article about sea sickness:
Click here: Cruise Critic First-Time Cruisers: Avoiding Seasickness

Next, talk to your doctor about which medications will be best for you. I do not like the patches (this drug is scopolamine) because I had a bad reaction to it (temporary blindness, kidney issues, etc). However, some people use it without any problems. I use meclizine (that's the generic drug name) which is sold in the USA as Bonine (or even available as a generic for a lot less money). It may have a different brand name in Mexico.

It is true that today's big ships- with their stabilizers- are less likely to cause sea sickness. However, you will still feel some movement- and that alone can make some people feel ill. I suggest starting your medications before you board the ship- some people even start the day before their cruise. And if you do get sea sick, every ship has a medical office (Infirmary) with a doctor who can prescribe drugs to treat sea sickness.

I hope you enjoy your first cruise- it's a wonderful way to travel!

Welcome to cc! I'm prone to motion sickness and have felt movement on all 7 cruises, all different size ships. Just depends on how high the seas are. Different medications work better for different people. I've tried the patch, dramamine and bonine. Bonine works the best for me with the least side effects. The generic is meclazine & much cheaper. I start taking them the day before leaving on a cruise. Depending on how rough the seas are, I may take them only a couple of days or the entire cruise. Only got seasick once in very high seas, but do get vertigo sometimes if I don't take medicine. Have a great trip!

I know that Bonine can make your mouth dry. I'm taking an antihistime/decongestant combo (claritin d) for allergies and it makes me very thirsty. I wonder if I can take Bonine alonge with my allergy meds? I did a google search and couldn't find out anything. Has anyone taken both types of medication before?

Default Bonine and allergy meds

lilient: I take Zyrtec for allergies, but it doesn't have the decongestant part that's included in your Claritin-D. I've never had any cross reactions between Bonine and Zyrtec. That said, I don't think you should take medical advice from any of us!

I suggest you talk to your pharmacist about taking both- she might be able to suggest something else, if she thinks Bonine (meclizine) will exacerbate your dry mouth/thirstiness.

Enjoy your cruise- and welcome to Cruise Critic.
