Unhappy Just heard on the news that more people went overboard...

Just heard that 2 people age 20 and 22 went overboard on there balcony on a Princess cruise at 1:30am this morning. They were both found by 6:30am. This seems to be happening alot now. I've never had a balcony room before, are the rails so low that your able to maybe sit on them (why anyone would do that is beyond me) and that could be a way you could go overboard? Supposedly the couple was out on the balcony and another couple was in the cabin, they heard a crash and when they came out, both people were gone. I can't think of any other way they could of went overboard besides the guy who just jumped off voluntarily .

What is the cruise world coming too .

Theres no way you could fall out, unless you climbed on top of them.

The rails are almost 4 ft high. Here is a picture of my wife looking out from our balcony on the Glory. She is 4' 10" tall

Hmm even from the pic, seems like someone could jump up and try to sit on the railing. Though that would be just the dumbest thing. I mean unless this other couple who discovered them gone pushed them off, how else did they just fall off their balcony. And 2 of them at that.

The balcony is not low. OMG I would not have one if it was. They must have climbed up on them.

This is getting tiresome. Pretty soon because of all these dumbell jumpers they are going to end up putting up 10 ft. plexiglass walls on the balconies. . .

I wish the media would do a little research before they use the words "fell overboard". It's not good journalism and non-cruisers get this impression that if you walk too close to the side, over you go. The only way you can fall overboard is if you are sitting or standing on the railing and in my opinion that is the same as jumping overboard. Maybe the cruise lines should sue the jerks that write this junk.

I can't imagine why anyone (no matter how drunk) would jump overboard. I don't know how two people can jump off a balcony!!! I am sure that they did do it deliberately because you simply can't fall off a balcony- especially two people. It is so strange to me.

I have been drunk many times and no one in their right mind- drunk or sober would be on a romantic moonlit balcony and think "hey, you know what- let's jump and die in the Ocean tonight. Wouldn't that be awesome!"

They must have been flying high on something besides alcohol! CRAZY!

Totally agree with you!

The only thing I can think of - they were sitting on the balcony railing - one started to fall and grabbed for the other person - and they both went over.

Plus, I love how this stories always happen in the dead of night. You don't hear of anyone "falling overboard" at two in the afternoon . YOu hate to assume, but I am thinking a long night of alcohol was involved.

I totally agree with you. The problem in this case is that if the media reports that an individual jumped off, then they are speculating and opening themselves for litigation. Therefore using the term "fell overboard" is used as a generic term.

My husband said that its obvious what they were doing, sex.

I have to admit that never entered my mind. We are going on the Grand next week, I can't wait.

That seems the only logical explanation. He was naked, according to reports. It happened at 1:30 am. Seems like a little thrill seeking sexual behavior is the only possibility.

"went overboard" would be a better one. Just doesn't sound as dramatic so I guess it'll never catch on.

I admit, I'm scared of heights. The amount of kids I see pulling the chairs to the balcony railing to look over is disturbing. I felt safe on my balcony on Diamond Princess on Aloha deck. I knew that if for any reason something went wrong, I wouldn't end up in the drink.
It's sad, but it may come a time where they will have an enclosed balcony with venetian type blinds, if that makes sense (I am from Australia, not too sure if you guys call the venetian blinds).

That was the first thing that crossed my mind. I'm still trying to figure out the mechanics involved that would end up with both going over the side.

It's spring break time. Already there has been one death reported.....an 18 year old girl fell off her Florida hotel balcony. Little sense of danger when one is young...that coupled with the free and easy atmosphere and booze makes for dangerous possibilities.
