Hearings were held today on Capitol Hill today about cruise ship crime.

Information revealed that of the 28 people who vanished from cruise ships in the past 3 years only 5 were found.

There were 177 reported sexual assaults and robberies amounting to over 5,000 bucks.

Also (saw on tv not in this internet report) that an RCI passenger was raped by a security guard onboard. RCI told her to collect her own evidence and file a report.

As a personal note. I have always thought ONE of the reason people vanish from ships is because they are victims of crime and are thrown overboard to cover it up.

Sounds to me it was a slow day in a news room and an editor told a reporter to go out there and dig up some cruise statistics as a follow up story to ``2 overboard'' on a Princess ship.


I'm a news reporter by trade and can just hear the flap in a news room on a slow news day. No new news on the Smith death; March Madness doesn't resume until the weekend. Go out there and find something that will sell papers or the station until something better to report pops up.

Sad but true, while reporters are out there chasing sensational lead stories that they make sensational through their reporting a few homeless will die on their city streets and the reporters will not even follow up to report their names or why they died. An Eagle Scout will complete a great project to help his community; a high school senior will earn a great scholarship and a young girl will help save the life a homeless puppy. But the big story of the day will be a regurgitation of old news about past cruise ship problems.

Man, I need a new profession.

This isnt one news reporter looking for something to write.

And the statistics for any major city in the US for one year are........?

They are also predicting "Strong hurricanes for 2007" just like they predict every year.Sometimes you have to take these reports with a grain of salt.

Well, Peoria isn't even a major city (maybe something like 38,000 people compared to the millions that cruise annually) but their crime statistics for two years (2005 and 2006) are:

31 murders
201 criminal sexual assaults
766 robberies
1082 aggravated assaults

If the Piano player's name is Paul, you have to see him. He is fabulous. Don't know if he will still be there after all these years. And if I'm not mistaken, the statistics in the first post have to do with 3 years worth of crime on EVERY CRUISE SHIP SAILING. What I take away from that is how insanely LOW the numbers are!

Yes I did and I still stand behind what I printed in my original message.

Those hearings would not have made headlines had not cruise mishaps been in the headlines over the past few days. Cruiselines would have participated. The house would have held hearings. But it would all have been like a tree falling in the forest in the press had not a cruiseline mishap made the news over the past few days.

Thanks for the info about the Star. Actually this will be our third sailing on the Star. Love the ship. We sailed her first 2 years ago on the same itinerary to the Mexican Riviera and saile her the second time to Alaska in Sept. 2006.

Plan on sailing her a few times again. Like I said, we love the ship and the crew!

I have a question for those who like to compare city crime with crimes on ships.

Are you saying that since crime happens everywhere and it is a fact of life then cities and cruiselines should just accept that fact and do nothing? Should they down play it like you all are doing?

I promise you anyone in his right mind would not sit by and watch crime happen in their neighborhood and let the city down play it and do nothing.

CRIME IS CRIME NO MATTER WHERE IT HAPPENS.

I suppose if you were a vicitim while on a cruise you would just say well crime happens everywhere. Lets just forget it and move on.

I think you may be missing the point. No one is down-playing the effects of crime anywhere. It's just that hearings are being held about crime on cruiseships when the statistics are extremely low compared to most cities during a shorter period.

And my point is it doesnt matter if its 1 crime or 100. The cruiselines try their best to sweep it under the rug. Aslo I take issue with the way they handle it after the fact.

Should they sit by and do nothing or step up to the plate and help solve the issue?

I agree that crime is crime no matter where it happens, but I also ask why the Senate isn't having a hearing right now about crime on US streets and in US cities. Congress should be calling in every mayor of every city and little burg to ask what the city or village is going to do about it.

But Congress isn't because that would be too painful for some.

I will have to agree with you on that. That's why I can't stress it enough to be very careful and don't let your guard down while you are cruising.
Yes crime can happen anywhere. But criminals will prey on easy targets......

I dont disagree with you on that but this is a CRUISE related board.
Crime here at home is an issue best discussed elsewhere. If you have a problem with crime in your city or town or burg or village then get involved and be part of the solution.

Lets stick to the topic and forget that we are cheerleaders for a minute ok?

I'm with Ron... There is crime everywhere.... But cruiseships don't seem to have the same accountability or responsibility as cities of taking care of it... You have to worry about what seas your in or where the ship is registered. And after the Smith case, obviously they don't have the same detectives or training for proper investigations... No matter if what you think about the Smith case, the investigation was handled incorrectly.

Congress needs to be involved... Congress of ALL countries need to be involved to protect their residents. No one should go on a cruise and be afraid something will happen to them and they might go overboard so it's not discovered. In that same note, the cruisers should be responsible too. Some drink too much, make poor decisions. And then cruiselines are blamed and that's not fair either. But there's alot of people who don't take responsibility for their actions these days... And we should be assured that the cruiselines will be responsible for their actions and that of their employees...

And will it stop me from cruising???? NO WAY.... I'm leaving in 11 days and have one planned for November and then in 2008.... I love it.....But I don't over drink and try to make safe decisions....
