I did this video as a tribute to the Harbor Pilots who routinely jump on and off our cruise ships, at all times of the day or night, in all weather. If you've never seen the pilot board a ship, it's a wonderful thing to watch. The video is based on shots I took while aboard Oriana a couple of weeks ago, and Pacific Star late last year. Enjoy. Neil

Hi,
Whilst the Pilot assumes some risks when boarding a vessl at sea the experience and actions of the Operator of the Pilot Boat play a big part in the success and safety of the operation. Additionally, the Master of the Ocean-Going ship has a responsibility to provide "a lee" to the Pilot Boat, and, at all times during the transfer of Pilot to his vessel (vice versa) will be montitoring the action from the Bridge. So, whilst it appears a scary act to the observer, it is a well practised operation, carried out all over the World. Paul, Retired Supervisor of Pilots.

Thanks for the info. Have you written anything online about your job? I'd be interested to read it. Neil

Hi Neilius,
I haven't published anything on any source; however, if you need some further information, please email me at: ridleystudio@gmail.com It's a long time since I saw the "Dispatching Rules" for the Brisbane Pilots but they seemed pretty fair and I can't believe that they would have deteriorated in the intervening years. Regards, Paul.
