Which ship hit Pier 90 (NYC) this morning???

Looks like Carnival Miracle hit the pier. Here is a link but it doesn't say much.

Now it has no ship listed - 1010 WINS like News Radio 88 are both reporting the Spirit

Giant Cruise Ship Bumps West Side Pier

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Norwegian Cruise Line ship struck a column at Pier 88 on Manhattan's West Side Sunday morning.

No one was hurt.

It happened as the vessel was docking following a nine day cruise to the Caribbean.

Most passengers say they didn't feel much as the ship bumped the pier. Others say they sense a jolt at the Norwegian Spirit entered its berth took quickly.

There was minor damage done to the ship. A beam on the pier was taken out.

Buildings inspector were on the scene checking the damage

Yup, on checking the WINS radio website, it was indeed the Spirit. I was listening on the radio before and apparently they were just as confused as I was. Poor Spirit!

are you sure it's not the Intrepid? oh wait it's in dry dock for refurbishment...and it looks nothing like a cruiseship.

Happy to hear there are no injuries. I was looking at a thread on Carnivals forum and that's when I saw it was the Spirit that hit. One person was "bashing" Carnival saying it was probably the Captain returning after too much partying! Someone else mentioned that the Captain doesn't bring the ship in to dock-the pilot ship and captain take over. We are sailing on the Spirit in August so when I read this, it made a little flip in my stomach. Can these types of "bumps" do any real damage to the ship? Also the pier?

Yes, ships can be damaged when these things happen. We sailed on the Diamond Princess back in 2005 when it was brand new and on it's cruise ever to Alaska. The ship hit and scraped against the pier in Victoria, Canada because of high winds. We ended up stuck against the side of the pier until very late at night when tug boats pulled the ship away, missed that port entirely and then the ship could only sail about half maximum speed at most returning to Seattle (damage to the propellers I think). We got to Seattle quite late - it was a good reminder of why cruiseline air tickets or staying in the depature port a night before and a night after your cruise is a good idea!

My vacation on the spirit leaves in 2 weeks Glad to hear no one was hurt. The ship changed their destinations a few months back because they already cannot go full force.

Sure top of my list today With the Navy in port for fleet week nobody is rushing anywhere in the area.

Its not in the Dry Dock. Its at the Navy Pier in Staten Island and its being refurbished-new displays etc.. Its was in the Dry Dock in Bayonne for scraping and painting but its done with that. Its being worked on at the Navy Home port pier in Staten Island.

That is correct. I am home, just off the Spirit. My sister and I were standing at the rail at the front of deck 13 on the Spirit from before the Verazzano Narrows Bridge until we docked, so we saw the collision with the pier. We were between Pier 88 and 90 rotating clockwise to tie up on the north side of Pier 88 and just kept coming closer and closer to Pier 90. I was wondering if it was an optical illusion that we seemed so close, and then the tip of the bow actually hit Pier 90. It scraped along for maybe 20 feet, damaging the outside of the pier somewhat. On the ship, the collision partially broke and mangled the little platform that extends from the tip of the bow. There is a radar connected to it, and it stopped turning, as apparently a connection was ripped.

A fire engine appeared shortly afterwards and drove onto Pier 90 and we saw the firemen inspecting the damage to the pier. It did not appear to be great. As I left the ship to find a taxi later, I saw a workman cleaning up debris around the bow platform that was mangled. We wondered about the radar mechanism--probably the only potential serious issue. If there were any on-board announcements regarding the collision, we did not hear them. Hope this does not delay today's sailaway. In 2001 the Norway hit the pier before a transatlantic voyage and the repairs were done during the crossing.

i was on the spirit when it hit the pier. not much damage soft hit. must people did not hear or feel it.

I was there. Saw the ship hit from may balcony 10002. The front of the ship was shaking and it was loud. People on the pier were running. It was crazy! Here are some pics.
