Default Shopping in Road town?

Is there much shopping in Road Town or is it all geared to the cruise ships? Any recommendations for interesting shopping, beyond the regular touriststy kind of stuff.

There are some nice shops on Main St including Sunny Caribbee which carries spices, chutney's and other flavors of the Caribbean as well as Caribbean art. There is also an area called Mill Mall. All are within 10 minutes walk from the ship.

So there shouldn't be any problem with bringing spices and such back to the US?

thanks

We were there last week and brought back quite a bit. Even listed them as "spices" on the Customs form and it didn't get a second glance.

Other the that one shop listed (for spices) there are less than a dozen decent shops in Roadtown. The entire population of the island is only 13,000 so there really wasn't much shopping.

No problems. Most dried, bottled or packaged spices are fine. But no dried citrus leaves, peel or products because of citrus canker. (please )

We went to the Baths (and loved the trip), but the couple we were traveling with spent the time in Road Town. They really liked shopping in Road Town because they said it wasn't overdeveloped like most islands and still had many good shops with a charm they wished existed other places. They didn't feel the high-pressure sales techniques and congestion of other islands. I'm sorry that we missed the experience!!

I went there last time I was in Tortola and got my nutmeg and some hot sauces. I look forward to stocking up on more spices this time. Are there vanilla beans available as well?

Another thought is if you keep walking down the same road as the spice house back towards the docks you will come across a little bakery/cafe run by cuisine tech students. We stopped there for coffee and pastries and sat at the little patio outside. It was really nice, even the chickens pecking around for crumbs (instead of pigeons). I really thought tortolla was one of my better visits; it is depressed but not as "touristy" as some of the other islands.
