Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. Got off the Epic a month ago and I agree with the OP. I work in the maritime/shipbuilding industry and these details certainly catch my attention as well. While our cabin was in a bit better condition than the OP's, I did notice quite a few fixtures that were rusting (mostly likely due to the unique shower design) or were scuffed up and dinged. I was also misled thinking that she would be fresh out of a drydock 2 years ago, especially after a whole 1+ year without pax, but come to find out that only the Haven got a nip & tuck. The rest of the ship probably just got a "shave & a haircut" (a colloquialism for bare minimum maintenance). I've posted the below picture of the illuminated signboard on another thread regarding Spice, but pretty sums up the condition of the ship. And we were docked in front of the sparkling new Wonder OTS.

  3. Just off the Epic about 2.5 weeks ago and yeah, the entire aft upper deck area including the sports court was closed. Got off at the first port of call in Ajaccio and looked up and the topside is just covered in this very unsightly and gross-looking brownish-yellowish stain. You can kinda see it in the photo below, but it's much more noticeable in person. Noticed 3 or 4 guys in Chantiers d'Atlantique (Epic's builders) shirts onboard, wondering if they were working on whatever's spewing out from the stacks. Another rather unsightly (and quite embarrassing) thing I noticed was that some of the LED lighting outlining each of the letters of the "NORWEGIAN EPIC" nameboard on the aft sundeck was either malfunctioned or just burnt out, so the entire week our name was the "NORWFCIA PIC". Didn't notice this until we disembarked the ship just before sunrise. Embarrassing because we had the gleaming new Wonder of the Seas docked in front of us and we sailed past her at sailaway. Wondered what they were thinking...
  4. I'll be using NCL BOGO for the first time in a few weeks. Flying out of EWR to BCN to catch the Epic, with a +2 day deviation pre-cruise. We requested EWR as our home airport. I thought that NCL was going to book us on the direct United EWR-BCN departing in the evening around 6PM and landing in the morning in BCN. This flight still has quite a few seats available last I checked. When I got the tickets a few weeks ago, a bit surprised that they booked us on SAS with a layover in Copenhagen, the departure from EWR at 11:30 PM, landing in CPH around 1:30 PM local, and then connecting to BCN, arriving early evening. By no means am I disappointed, just treating this as part of the adventure. Plus side is I get to squeeze in a few more flight segments and miles, since I'm a MileagePlus Silver member. We still get a full day of sightseeing in BCN before we board the ship as well. The return flight home is a direct UA from BCN-EWR. Hope this helps!
  5. We requested a +2 day deviation pre-cruise, flying from EWR to BCN. Our reservation has been updated accordingly showing Friday as the first day for a Sunday embarkation. Looking for some past EWR/JFK or East Coast flyers with a 2 day deviation: Since almost all transatlantic flights seem to be overnight and arriving the following morning, do we fly Thursday night and arrive Friday morning, or fly Friday night and arrive Saturday morning?
  6. Thanks for this quick but very concise review! Glad you enjoyed your cruise! Did you book your excursions thru NCL or on your own? Regarding the elevators - perhaps they were doing maintenance on them...?
  7. The rep I spoke to gave me an option for a 1 or 2 day deviation. I'm pretty sure 2 days deviation is the max (also from reading what others posted).
  8. I called the number found in the vacation summary under the Air, Hotel, Transfers tab - "For customized air arrangements, call 1-866-625-1163" and was able to secure a +2 day deviation when I was 110 days out.
