Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. Personally, I would jump at the upgrade at that price! Apparently the dining options are more extensive in Club compared to straight Britannia. Were you in the Barents sea on the Hurtiguten ship by any chance, as I would consider that pretty rough. The H ships are also an enormous amount smaller than the QM2. I've sailed up the front on deck 10 on the QM2 and barely felt it rock at all crossing the Tasman (with its reputation for being pretty rough). I've also sailed on the Spitsbergen - you can't compare them at all. Take your upgrade and have a lovely time. (Stemetil works well for seasickness!).
  2. That's amazing! Well done and congratulations. You'll be so glad of the extra space and that couch on such a long journey.
  3. Does Princess have a chat function via their website or app? That way you could have it in writing. I also struggle with some of them; recently had a call with someone from another cruise line and her English was so limited that she didn't know the words in English for the things I needed her to explain (issues about the rules for particular types of FCC). Unbelievably bad customer service. And yes, the accents often made them difficult to understand on the phone.
  4. I've just checked my future booking for Queen Anne and I must say it is not clear whether there is a charge for the Golden Lion. There are four restaurants (the Asian, Italian and steak house) which are labelled 'Additional' but they are grouped under a particular category - 'Flavours of the World'. Under 'Traditional tastes' they have the pub but no mention of it being included in the fare. The next section is 'Traditional Afternoon Tea' and it includes the text 'Included in your fare' whereas the Champagne afternoon Tea's description avoids any mention of additional charge or inclusion in fare (as per the description of the pub). I'd say they're either going to charge for it or there's just been no eye for detail on the descriptions. Both options I would suggest are equally likely having seen the way the website is managed (I use the term loosely).
  5. Always good to have a couple of credit cards on you when you travel overseas I think in case there's an issue with one. I won't be paying for much off the ship hopefully so should not be a major issue (except for hotel pre and post cruise). I really liked travellers' cheques! It really felt like travelling was something so out of the ordinary and special.
  6. Thanks very much for sharing your personal experience with doing that. Good to have confirmation that it's not asking too much of them to accomodate the different payment method. I'll be doing a b2b so will zero out the account mid-voyage and at the end.
  7. Understood. My issue was that I had the funds loaded as USD so I could know exactly how much I had in that currency and what I would be paying for charges that would come out in that currency. Also that I was in South America and was looking to gain the advantage that paying in that currency may give. Not sure now how to handle my next cruise in a few weeks' time in Japan on a ship which will charge in USD and likely want to put a hold on any charges as we go. Maybe I'll give them a credit card to use for the holds and then give them the Wise card the day before departure so that the funds come out against the USD directly. I wonder how the exchange rate will be with the Up card when withdrawing cash that's not in the currency on the card. Or will you load onto the card the specific currency you'll want to be withdrawing? I might be overthinking this!
  8. I hope Cunard is planning to have a live-stream of all these events to the other ships. I'll be on-board QE at the time and would love to be able to watch the arrival of Queen Anne into Southampton and the naming ceremony. They could televise it into the theatre. Will they be having media on board for a soft launch in the week or two prior to taking on passengers?
  9. Maybe they got fed up with people complaining they'd seen the films before and so show films now people are unlikely to have seen (however for good reason!).
  10. What drew you to Cunard and a World Cruise if you are not keen on dressing for dinner? I'm really curious and it might help people to give you advice if they could understand your thought processes a bit more. I've always travelled as a solo on Cunard and find it very enjoyable especially sharing a table at dinner with interesting fellow passengers. There are plenty of activities on during the day and the evening but it would depend a bit on your interests and perhaps your age group, as well.
  11. I recently got a Wise debit card for use overseas. The pros are that the exchange rate is good. The down side is that if you use it in a hotel or on a ship against your account they will put hold/pending transactions on the card, during the cruise or stay, against your card balance which takes a full 31 days to be removed!! This means that the money you put on there isn't available to be used for any other payments for a full month. I cruised recently with this card. They put three pending transactions on the card and then at the end of the cruise charged the whole lot AGAIN to the card. So I'm having to wait for all the pending transactions to come off before I can use that money. It would be bad luck if you had to use that money while you were overseas - you'd have to find more funds to transfer into the card.
  12. There are definitely more important issues in the world but this is a cruise forum so the issues here are going to be mundane but pertinent to the topics at hand. I'm happy to talk about wars and other even more brutal unequal injustices but I think we'll have to do it elsewhere.
  13. Quite true. Thank you for the correction. I should have paid more attention to the original post.
  14. You most certainly can. You can nominate which size table you'd prefer to be seated at by logging into your booking via the My Cunard link on their website. If you choose early or late dining (as opposed to open seating) you will have a fixed time to dine and be at the same table with the same guests each dinner time. It's a great option for solo travellers.
  15. My very recent experience would indicate that Cunard may block out as 'sold out' the higher grades of cabin on the website whilst they are shuffling the cabin allocations around during the bidding process. I recently bid on a Q3; all categories above Britannia balcony were showing as sold out and yet my bid was accepted. My logic tells me that they just need to start moving people up to any higher category to start freeing up other cabins for the acceptance of bids. It makes sense to me that they close them for sale temporarily on the website while they do their shuffling around. It's a much better arrangement for Cunard to achieve a guaranteed amount of money for the higher grades of cabin than to risk being left with them empty and unsaleable closer to departure (or even at departure). I'm sure people are willing to pay more for an upgrade several weeks prior to embarkation than they might be at the point of embarkation. The prices achieved by this bidding system are higher in my experience than the pay-for upgrade Cunard used to offer prior to departure. And definitely more lucrative to Cunard than the free upgrade which I've been lucky enough to benefit from on one occasion.
