Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. I can see where the widow was probably in some form of shock and the easier choice was to just keep her husband on the ship. I suppose if someone in authority on the ship told me there was a morgue I would probably think things are going to be ok. I'm not a believer of viewing a dead body, so this wouldn't be so much of an issue for me. The times I have seen a dead body in a casket they did not look the same and I wouldn't want to remember them that way. But I know there are different cultures that definitely want to see the body laid out. In fact, my extended family who were from the South also took pictures. Uh, no, just no. On a separate note, I don't think anyone has mentioned the ickiness of having beverages stored next to a dead body. Or were they removed? If I were a passenger on that cruise I would be feeling kind of squeamish about that.
  2. We were on a Windstar cruise last month. When we boarded, all crew were wearing masks. About halfway through the cruise, the Captain announced that the crew would no longer be wearing masks because apparently they (Windstar) felt it was safe to do so. The crew was very happy to be mask-free. However, a few days later they were in masks again and the Captain said that there were cases on board. In fact, I read on a Roll Call post that the Captain himself tested positive on the cruise immediately following ours. My husband and I both tested positive for Covid the day after we returned home. He had a cough but nothing else, I had sneezing and sniffles, no big deal, but the fatigue was something else. I finally tested negative after 10 days.
  3. We were on a New England/Canada cruise just last month (Oct 12-23). It was cold the entire time, especially in Montreal and Quebec, but really everywhere, including the final stop in Boston. Rained off and on the entire time. Most people were in puffy jackets, vests, sweaters, boots and scarves. It was really too cold to be out on deck. On the hop-on-hop-off buses in various cities, it was FREEZING. Bundle up if you plan to do that. Open-air, cold wind. Wear something with a hood or a knit cap. It was even cold on the ship, which surprised me. We missed one port due to the fog, it was not safe to dock. The cruise itself was very nice, but we will never do a cold-weather cruise again. I feel that the weather really diminished the experience overall.
  4. Also a Windstar first-timer. I agree that Amphora is too small. We learned that if we wanted a table for two, we had to get in line before they opened at 6:30. I was not impressed with Candles at all. Of course part of that might be that we were cruising in cold weather (Canada/New England) so there was no outside seating. So basically it was just like eating in Veranda, except that you were served and there was steak on the menu. Veranda was very crowded for breakfast and lunch. Again, it was too cold to eat outside and the only other option was Yacht Club, which has very limited food choices. I don't know why they don't serve breakfast and lunch in Amphora, as they do on other cruise lines (breakfast and lunch in dining rooms) on the cold weather cruises. We did order room service a couple of times but found it to be of a lesser quality than going to the restaurants. Overall, the food was just ok. We did find that the majority of the cruisers on board that we met were repeat Windstar customers, and I get the loyalty I see here, but I don't think we will cruise with them again.
  5. I agree. The vaccine won't prevent you from getting Covid, but will keep you out of the hospital. We got the latest booster just a few weeks before the cruise. My feelings before the cruise (and still are) that if you are really worried about getting Covid, you just shouldn't travel. It is sooooo contagious. Otherwise, live your live.
  6. We got off the Pride on Sunday. My husband and I both tested positive for Covid this morning. He's coughing, I am having cold-like symptoms and a lot of fatigue. I imagine there are quite a few other passengers going through the same thing now.
  7. We're on the Pride right now, getting off tomorrow. By the way, Amphora opens at 6:30. People are already lined up. We sailed out of Montreal. It was pretty calm while we were on the St. Lawrence River, but when we reached the Atlantic, it was terrible. Extremely rough and rocky. I've sailed on several cruises before, all larger ships, and I have never experienced anything like this before. It was difficult to even just walk across the stateroom and felt at times like we would be thrown off the bed. I am not kidding. Our stateroom is mid-ship. Can't imagine what it must be like for staterooms that are not. I would never do this again. I like the stability of a larger ship.
  8. We will also be flying into Montreal and sailing two days later. I called our hotel and the concierge suggested Test Mobile https://www.testmobile.ca You can go to one of their locations, or they will also come to your hotel, which is what we are doing.
  9. Isn't Toronto in Canada? Or are you simply traveling from Toronto to wherever the ship leaves from. I am confused.
  10. Anyone embarking on a cruise that is departing from Canada must present a negative Covid test in order to board. This is not the cruise line's requirement, it is Canada's. Doesn't matter what cruise line you are going on.
  11. Re PCR test, the problem is it takes longer to get the results from a PCR test, by the time the results get back for us we would already be on the plane. The timing is tricky.
  12. The testing isn't random for boarding a cruise ship, you MUST present a negative COVID test result in order to board. This isn't the cruise lines request, it is Canada's requirement. The test must be done within two day of boarding. It's all on the Windstar website.
  13. We're flying to Montreal from the US, of course we need to do ArriveCan before we depart US. Our cruise departs from Montreal and eventually ends up in Boston, but we make stops in Canada along the way (Halifax, etc.). So when we embark on the ship, we are not technically "leaving" Canada. For that reason I believe we do need to register with ArriveCan again before we board. Does that sound right?
  14. Except for the countries that are exempt, such as Canada.
  15. Yes, we were in Canada in July and had to register with ArriveCAN in order to enter the country. We're sailing out of Montreal on Windstar on October 12. Flying from SFO, the timing is going to be very tricky. I see where we can be tested by Windstar at the pier for $69. It's nerve-wracking, I am so stressed about this.
