Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. True, and I see your point. However, the T&C of Nexus states that members must update address/passport/personal info as it changes, which I do. There is nothing in the T&C to suggest family members would impact other family status in the program. Waiting to see if my ex-husband (daughter's father) has his Nexus revoked too. 🤔
  2. Agree with Fouremco, passport/Nexus/Fast are acceptable forms of ID. See here for more details: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/td-dv-eng.html
  3. The perscription was her partner's, who also drives her car. She lost her Nexus and has to apply for a waiver if she wants to enter the US again but no charges laid. The typical millenial lacidaisical attitude with no thought for consequenses. I always ensure my car is completely empty before heading across the border!
  4. I have been a Nexus participant since the program started, so was very surprised to receive a notification last week that my Nexus has been revoked!! The notification only says that I "no longer meet the requirements of the program", which isn't much help at all. Seemed very strange to me because I've never been arrested, no crimimal convictions, no seizures or detentions, nothing that would make me ineligible. I originally thought it must be a case of mistaken identity. Some serious digging and calls to Immigration Lawyers for help has led to the conclusion that my (adult) daughter is the reason. Turns out she was denied entry and had her Nexus revoked several months ago for having perscription narcotics in her vehicle that were not hers (and not declared). My husband and I are now guilty by association in the eyes of the Trusted Traveller Program. 😥 All of our kids use our address as their "permanent" address because they all seem to move on a regular basis, have had poor landlords withholding mail, etc. I had no idea that this seemingly simple and convenient use of our home address would lead to our revocation of Nexus. It also begs the question, how far this reasoning would extend? What if I had a basement suite and the tenant lost their Nexus? Still guilty by association?
  5. Glad to hear he got the visa Wendy! Allan and I are looking at a Nile cruise but hesitant due to the visa problems!
  6. We learned early on in our cruising life, that cruise- line excursions are seldom worth the price and tend to do independant tours as well. During our last Alaska cruise (Celebrity) we found it quite difficult to find independant tours because the tour companies rely so heavily on the cruise industry. We have excursions booked with Regent in each port, and will report back on whether they are worth it. Regent does offer many tours for an extra charge, but we stuck with the included ones.
  7. We booked category F2, which is fairly close to a Signature Suite on HAL. My TA got us a better deal than what is captured in your post, in CAD $ (so 30% savings right there). I'm also comparing overall cost to our "usual" final bill which includes an extra 1 or 2 specialty restaurant nights over the course of the 14 nights, excursions in each port, drinks over the HIA cap (my wine and DH's scotch), etc. Don't get me wrong, I would have gladly sailed HAL in June if my TA had not gotten the Regent for us!
  8. Its been 20 years since we last sailed with NCL, so hard to compare those long ago memories with our most recent HAL 18 day SA cruise last November. I can say that we were very happy with HAL in terms of food, service, itinerary, ship amenities and spaciousness. Quite easy to find a spot to sit where ever we went. However, we are going on Regent in June because the cost for a 14 day B2B Alaska is the same as HAL for same room category once you include HIA, tips, etc. Will let you know which one we like better in a few months! ☺️
  9. The fee has been $50 for the past 20 years. I'm surprised it took this long to happen. Still worth it to me as I'm only 10 min from the border and go down for gas frequently.
  10. Both Princess website and my TA's website indicate the Jan 28 cruise is sold out. My guess is that you are on standby in the event someone cancels in the next few weeks. Fingers crossed for you!
  11. On our latest trip, we found the Lido pool bar was our favorite because we struck up a good relationship with one of the waiters. By day 3, Andry had remembered our names, our drink preferences and was always walking by at exactly the right time to order another round. We typically head down to the Pinnacle or Ocean bar for a cocktail before dinner, and staff were circulating to take drink orders but were often very busy. I was surprised (having been a server loooooong ago) that the waiters didn't seem to have specific sections assigned. The overlap meant some seats had plenty of service while others were lacking.
  12. We took a tour/transfer with the German Pirate. It was a great choice for us with pick-up at the cruise terminal, see Valparaiso, Vina del Mar and the Casablanca valley before being dropped off at hotel in Santiago. Check your departure port, as I don't think there are many cruises from Valparaiso any longer. San Antonio is an industrial port, but seems that most cruises stop there now. It is at least 1.5 hr drive from Santiago to San Antonio, and about an hour between Valparaiso and San Antonio. Personally, for the extra time in Santiago and so much to see and do, I would stay there.
  13. If you fly business class out of Dublin, the fees are 1/10th the cost Heathrow's
  14. Agreed, there are a few seats available along the low faux-stone wall in domestic arrival luggage area. There are six carousels, 1,2 and 3 for Westjet and 4,5,6 for Air Canada, separated by an open hallway. As long as you know which airline your sister is flying on, you will be fine.
  15. Just arrived home after 17 nights on Oosterdam. We really enjoyed the cruise and can say HAL is comparable to Celebrity and Princess: - food in MDR excellent in terms of quality, presentation and quantity. We ate mostly breakfast and dinner in MDR, and only had 1 bad experience on the first night. We had anytime dining and never had to wait more than 5 min to be seated (by ourselves or at shared table). No issue with timing of courses either. On par with Celebrity, better than Princess. - Cocktails were inconsistent. It really depended on the bartender making the cocktail whether we got the correct recipie. Beer and wine selection decent. I was sad to see that Courvoisier had been removed as that is my go-to cognac. Celebrity and Princess better for consistency, on par for selection. - Entertainment was OK. Not the big shows that Celebrity and Princess put on, but good small local acts that we enjoyed. We did not enjoy the house band in the re-branded Rolling Stone lounge. - Ship life depends on what you enjoy doing. There were many offerings for painting, origami, bridge and other activities that we aren't interested in. Pools, hot tubs and spa were great! Hope this helps. Dawn
