Marmarjudy Posted May 9, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 9, 2004 It's almost, but not quite, a toss up, with strong preference going to Princess. For reference: within the last 18 months, I have sailed Celebrity once and Princess three times, and Celebrity (among other lines) many times before that. Celebrity was always the standard, with all cruises compared to that experience (first Celebrity cruise in 1994, more later) Our first Princess cruise 18 months ago (on the Grand, plus the same again 4 months later) surprisingly compared favorably to all prior Celebrity, and exceeded in many ways. Our Celebrity cruise a year ago (on Century) was not near as good as Princess: the food was not as good, lacking in many ways (especially availability) the service was just okay, entertainment was mediocre. It was not the original Celebrity that we loved, especially the food. Cutbacks were obvious. Our cruise on Golden in January was great, better than the Century. We are now totally hooked on Princess and I couldn't get my husband back on Celebrity; it's Princess or no cruise. We LOVE Personal Choice dining (always a table for two, at a time of our choosing) and the 24 hour buffet (no planning hunger around buffet hours) It also doesn't hurt that the last two cruises on Princess we were upgraded to a full suite--talk about "hooking" us! NitaBcruising Posted May 9, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 9, 2004 Newt, you sneaky dog! I like Princess and Celebrity about equally. Come join us on Star Princess Oct. 31st, eastern Caribbean. It goes to Tortola, nearly the only island in the Caribbean we haven't yet seen. We have just over 40 persons from CC on this sailing. We got a great price on a balcony cabin. We don't usually splurge on one, but was the price of an OV. I'm one of those that thinks Celebrity's food is better. But, Princess' is fine, too. Good service on both. Entertainment may be a bit better on Princess. Nita
Commodore Suzy Posted May 9, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 9, 2004 I would say Celebrity has the best food and service, but a VERY regimented and traditional experience. Princess is all about choice, with fine if not fabulous food, good service, and lots of GREAT flexibility. I love eating when I want, with whom I want, and having multiple entertainment options each night. BB5953 Posted May 10, 2004 #18 Share Posted May 10, 2004 I was hoping you all could help. I was booked for Celebrity Summit on 4/1/05 and it now looks like it could be cancelled. I am thinking about trying a different line and would like to try princess if my cruise falls through. I see the Caribbean princess sails 4/2/05 and was hoping to hear opinions on what to expect. CruiseNut7 Posted May 10, 2004 #20 Share Posted May 10, 2004 BB5953 - Just returned last Friday from a 7 day on the Celebrity SUMMIT. Also sailed on the STAR Princess last September. As you probably know, the STAR and the Caribbean Princess are sister ships and almost identical. If your SUMMIT cruise falls through, I would have no reservation in recommending Princess. On the STAR, we enjoyed fine service, excellent food, wonderful entertainment and particularly personal choice dining. On the SUMMIT we experienced the same, but the deal breaker for us in future bookings will be the personal choice dining. Although many cruisers enjoy traditional, my preference is to have my meals at a time of my choosing. With that in mind, Princess best suits us! Hope this helps in some way! Happy sailing. sueclark Posted May 11, 2004 #23 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Hi Newt, Since we just sailed Princess for the first time I thought I'd try to answer. We are comparing the Grand Suite on Grand Princess with the Royal Suites on Celebrity. As to the decor of the suite itself, no comparison the Grand Suite wins. Of course, it's the top suite where the Royal suite is the next level down. Size is similar, decor - Princess wins; size of balcony - Celebrity wins; jacuzzi on balcony - Princess wins; Service - Celebrity wins - No Question!!! We liked the decor of the Grand Princess ship throughout, but found that the size was not to our liking. We missed the special treatment Celebrity gives to the top suite passengers.
