Bringing fish we caught, back on plane...How?.

I read somewhere that you could bring your catch back on the plane....anyone know how this works and if it is ok?

We travel with fish all the time...we've even taken it to Mexico and to the Bahamas, and brought fish back from Mexico. There are places that will freeze it for you. Then, depending on how much you have...

With just a few pieces, we have wrapped it in newspaper and then in plastic and put it in the middle of our luggage.

If we have a lot we use a box or a cheap cooler, fill it with frozen fish, add wadded newspaper well packed in to fill any empty spaces, and just check it. With new baggage restrictions, you'll likely have to pay extra for it.

But.... I believe it is the cruise ship that won't allow you to bring the fish onboard.

So, in Alaska....

you can pay to have it processed and shipped home to you.

We have also done this. We take a cooler out with us packed with items that would usually go in a suitcase. When done fishing, have your catch filleted and frozen. If in Alaska, there are many places that will also vacum pack and freeze.

Pack the cooler with the frozen fillets and stuff newspaper in any left over space. Tape the cooler shut with duct tape. Check it as luggage and carry the other items on in a carry on.

I have done this with fish from Alaska to Florida and they stay frozen for the entire trip.

Any fishing charter or guide should be able to make arrangements to have the fish prepared the way you want, freeze, and have shipped to your home on the date you decide.

Actually, not true everywhere. Probably is in the port cities, but once you are in southcentral, it depends on where you are, as not all fishing is located close enough to facilities for the guides to be doing this. They will clean and cut it for you, but you take your fish to a convenient (for you) place to have it frozen and shipped, or frozen and stored until you pick it up.

When you are taping the cooler, remember to "tape the tape", meaning run the tape around a few times, making sure the tape sticks to the tape. If you only tape once around, it might not stick to the cooler, but it will stick nicely to the tape.

We are from Alberta, Canada and also have been informed that we cannot ship home. My understanding was becasue of the border. However, Albertans can go on fishing trips from here to Alaska and send their fish home. We are going Halibut fishing in Icy Strait Point and the tour guide also said it would be difficult. Has anyone on thie board gone fishing in Icy Strait that can help? We sure would love to bring home the fish. We will be on a cruise ship so will not be able to store it.it would have to be somewhere in Icy that would freeze wrap and have it shipped. Thanks for any information..

You need US export and USDA paperwork to get the fish into Canada. IF the processor is not set up to do this, it will be almost impossible to get the fish into Canada. FedEx (the normal fish shipper) will not accept shipment to Canada without the paperwork. Sorry.
