  1. I just want to make a comment to the several of you that think there is a special key needed to over ride the deadbolt. Posts from other members prove that is NOT correct. Please read the following threads and decide if you need to re-think your personal safety concerns or not, but that keyhole below the card slot has not been in use since 2006.

This is an example of why I hesitate to post anything on these boards.

Look at my avatar, I was a night supervisor at the front desk for Princess. I had occasion to have to use the "metal key" as it is referred to.

At least the grand class ships (I only worked this class) use a Vingcard Classic door locking mechanism.

This comes from the Vingcard operating guide:

    a metal

emergency key (EMK) key operates the cylinder and overrides the deadbolt. If the

deadbolt is thrown, turn the key 360 degrees to retract the deadbolt, then turn an

additional 120 degrees to retract the latch. Only a metal EMK key can extend a

    deadbolt from outside a room.

I've worked in hotels where the deadbolt is attached to the electronic portion of the lock, but in my experience Vingcard (older models, which Princess uses vs RFID newer type) deadbolts are usually mechanically operated.

    But, maybe I'm wrong....

  2. As has been discussed before on this forum, the deadbolts on Princess' ships can be overridden by the steward's pass key. When in the room, use of the DND sign is helpful, but won't work if childish pranksters remove or flip the card. Neither will it stop a determined maniac as on HAL.

A small rubber doorstop will prevent accidental entry; it won't stop the homicidal maniac but could prove to be a delay in the case of an emergency. I guess you just have to decide which event is more likely to happen to you and act accordingly.

The stewards key can't bypass the deadbolt, there is a metal key that must be used to open the deadbolt. Their electronic key is only for their floor as well. You will see the traditional keyhole under the handle. Access is VERY controlled to this key, room stewards don't have access to it.

  3. Yeah, That's why I said I do the order the night before, so everything is ready... they even know what time I'll be in to dine....

Believe me, I worked on the ship and have a pretty good understanding of what happens....what's possible and what's not.

  4. I call this the moviestar menu... because hollywood types don't order off the menu, they order what they feel like eating...so sometimes when I'm a passenger, I like to feel like a moviestar too, lol

Reminds me of a time when someone asked why I like to go to Thailand so often and I replied... I like to feel like a Kennedy every now and then!

The best is when you have an Italian head waiter .... I usually ask to see the next days menu at dinner and if nothing attracts my attention, I ask the head waiter to come over....

If I'm not sure what I want, I ask for suggestions because they do this all the time and come up with some great stuff...

Sauteed spinach with garlic is a favorite as is the big shrimps with cocktail sauce instead of those limp ones offered on the menu. Also, buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes like they have in Sabatini's. Or the night I see an appetizer of melon and prosciutto I will ask for roasted red peppers, they go together so well. I love chicken parm, but Princess makes it with a brown gravy, that's so wrong.... so with a red marinara sauce and a side of penne pasta and lemon butter sauce is much better.

The list goes on.... especially when you are on for long cruises, the menu becomes mundane .... and I've never had to wait for the food, always served along with everyone elses at the table. They are pros in the galley.... they whip this stuff up like nothing... not like we'd have to do at home.

  5. Same here aswell, 88 and 89 ? Enough said....Out.

    I agree...

In addition to having worked on the ship and in land hotels for many years, I can not tell you the number of times people were ABSOLUTELY sure that something was missing... until we found it somewhere else in the room or their friends room or we called their family at home and they had left it on the kitchen table.

I've even had times where money was claimed missing until we back tracked everything they had done only for them to realize they had forgotten about a purchase they had made.

I leave my money on the desk, I don't even use the safe on ships. The crew is so paranoid that they are constantly being tested and that it's a trap, lol

On the other side of the coin, how embarrassing for someone to allege that their room steward stole something, to find it's not true.... and then not apologize .... I've seen it time and time again, smh

  6. That's the order it was on the Crown last year, even though it was from Galveston and that's the order for next year on the Emerald.

I've encountered many mistakes on their site, especially on some ships' layouts... I go by the listed itinerary, not what's pictured.

  7. I'm just waiting (not hoping though) for Princess to do the Same as Carnival and not allow agencies to dip into their commision to lower the price of the cruise.

So whether you buy from the largest agency or the cruise line itself, for Carnival the prices are almost always the same within a few cents. You may get an agent to give you something as a token for booking with them but big price discounts are a thing of the past.

I've had "goodwill" credit in the past and was aware that this amount is non-commissionable, so travel agents have to adjust their LOWEST quote to reflect the amount they are getting and in turn can share with you via a lower price.

I predicted a lot of confusion when I saw how Princess was crediting the money for all these "free" sailings, lol

  8. OMG, I just randomly came across this review and it brought back memories seeing the pictures.

This was my 1st cruise on my 1st and only contract working on Princess.

When you wrote about Don Luigi, I laughed so much.... he's been doing this a very long time.

Josh was amazing, he never came back after this contract... too bad was a good guy.... he's the only crew member I knew that went home with less money than he came with because of his bar bill.

David is a great CD, has a big following... he staff "loves" him ;) because he has a thing about doing 50's night on formal night and they have to change clothes so many times on that day,lol

was a well written review... kind of epic from the time frames ;-)

  9. Entire cruise and can only be purchased on embarkation or following day.

We had it on the Star for our 15 night holiday Hawaii cruise, if you have any questions (that haven't been answered in the other threads/posts by myself or others) happy to answer them. It worked great for us, but others may not find it to be of value. We do not have kids/under 21s, just the 2 of us.

How is it tracked that you purchased this, is it a sticker like the Coke promotion?

  10. When considering "prime" times, don't forget that the crew also use the Internet to stay in touch with their families. I've found that just like LA traffic, there is no good time; usage can be high from morning until late at night (Midnight.) When passengers aren't using it, the crew is. The one time I've found that is pretty reliable is 6-8-am.

    .

I use to tell passengers that complained about bandwidth....yeah, it is like LA traffic, think when no one is on the road.....on a ship, when is EVERYONE working and Passengers busy too.....dinner time!

They would always come back and thank me because at that time it's like high speed internet at home, lol

  11. I bought a bottle of Bacardi rum there before and believe me, all I drink is Bacardi (when I drink). This was a fake bottle, not Bacardi although it was in a Bacardi bottle just like an original. I couldn't believe it, I couldn't even stand the taste. I was telling a friend of mine in retail (he worked for Federated, they sell to the shops on board of cruiselines) he said Panama has the biggest amount of fake products next to Thailand.

That explained it...so if the price seems toooo good, maybe check the product again.
