  1. Just to update following call to Royal, with mixed responses. After being transferred to Loyalty desk, the agent said, yes I could keep my double points if I switch ships, dates, etc. The change must meet the original requirements, including sailing before 12/31/22,  with modification (not cancel and rebooking) to my existing reservation.  The deposit was simply transferred to the new booking. Thanks for everyone's help.  It seems like the reservation agents like to confuse us with different answers.

  2. I booked a cruise for next year, before the end of the double points. I am thinking about pushing the cruise back a couple weeks. I booked a refundable deposit. If I change the date of the cruise to a new date, will the reservation be modified or cancelled and rebooked?  I tried to call, but they most close earlier than they used to.  Will I have to pay a new deposit and wait for the original deposit to be returned?  Do you know if the double points would remain?

  3. I am in a similar situation. Booked Alaska cruise for June that was cancelled by Royal Caribbean. Booked airfare separately through American. Requested refund for cruise. I was able to cancel hotels and excursions booked on my own without penalty. American Airlines COVID special cancellation policy is currently running through the end of May.

I had purchased Nationwide Cruise insurance to cover the entire trip through insuremytrip.  I called Nationwide travel insurance today regarding my airfare options. . They said no coverage for COVID, unless I am specifically ordered to quarantine by my doctor. Shelter in place, pandemic, cancelled cruise, etc. are not covered.  No recourse, unless I have a medical reason to cancel.

I inquired about a claim for itinerary change, which has to occur before the cruise according to the policy. No coverage for this either, as the cruise has to take place in order to make a claim.

Asked about refunding for the cost of the insurance policy. They are not offering refunds, but recommended I contact insuremytrip. Insuremytrip lists on their website policies are non-refundable after the initial review period.

My only recourse will be through the airlines. They have to have at least a 61 minute change or a cancelled flight, in order to get a refund.  I guess I'll wait and see and request a change voucher closer to time of the trip.

Granted, I've usually just purchased the cruise insurance in case of cancellation for medical or medical evacuation in a foreign country, but cruise insurance has been a disappointment in this case!

  4. I am not really sure myself. Maybe someone more techy than I could explain. I would would think you could do it anytime. It is supposed to give you access to all cell phone towers and update the preferred roaming list.

  5. For those inquiring about US Cellular service in Alaska, I have just returned. I had also searched for information about coverage, but had trouble finding much information other than the coverage maps.

Prior to the trip, I called US Cellular. We have a nationwide plan. The agent had said that we would be able to roam in Alaskan Ports per their coverage map. They reported when roaming outside of home area after 200 mB of data was used, the speed would "throttle down" which he explained as still being able to use data at a much slower rate.

As for travel into Canada, the rate would be $3 roaming per day, 0.99 per minute plus toll charges. They said texting would be free. I didn't try this though, I was afraid I would still be hit with roaming charges. I simply turned my phone to airplane mode or off whenever we were headed into Canada.

The representative suggested we update the cell phone towers prior to leaving for vacation by entering *228 (must be done from home area).

I was able to make and receive calls and texts in Anchorage, Seward, Juneau, Skagway, Hoonah/Icy Strait Point, and Ketchikan. I was not able to send picture text messages.

  6. I received a Royal Caribbean Signature Visa upgrade offer in the mail to receive a special 2-for-1 airfare offer? Anyone else considering this upgrade offer? I can't find details about the special airfare offer, so not sure if it's a specific airline or how many restrictions would be on the special. I still have the older platinum version of the visa, but considering the change to the new card. Have you noticed any differences since changing to the new signature visa card?
