I have crossed this magic threshold just over a year ago and trying to figure out what is so special about 55?

In the part of Canada I am from (British Columbia) we don't have any benefits until 65.

    So I am curious

Senior rates in various situations can be fluid. Some folks can receive a full pension by then, so it's not an unrealistic minimum number.

  2. Ben and David seem popular here, which I fully understand. My respect for them soared when they saw to it that their friend Steph was clearly having a lot of fun during a difficult point for her.

Started this thread to ask whether many here also follow Gary Bembridge, with a different style?

I'm one of those geeks that likes to pay attention when they mention the plugs.  I've had cabins with one 110v outlet, one 120v outlet, and no USB ports; and I've had cabins with four outlets and half a dozen USB ports.  I think it's helpful to know which is which, besides the fact that newer ships tend to have more outlets and ports.

I, too, watch the videos for the power points, especially what's at bedside (or not). Sadly, a 5W USB is a disappointment. I've yet to see a cabin with a souped-up USB port.

I'm not interested in shows at all, no thanks. Very interested in the food reviews.

You've got the idiom correct, but I have never understood it.  Of course you can have your cake and eat it – if you don't mind stale cake!  What you can't do is eat your cake and have it.  But another thing you can't do is change an idiom once it's established!

I think that means that once you eat it, the cake is gone. You haven't got some any more.

It is, of course, up to the individual to decide whether to remain mute and docile while bigotry, racism, misogyny, attacks on religions, sexual preference, partisan political rants etc. are openly voiced in your presence at their table in the MDR.  Some of us make different choices.

What kind of cruises do you go on? 😱

  6. I've found discussing life where I'm from and the other person works well. Previous travel stories are good. One table mate was a theater person. It just works without going into politics or religion.

I'd find something along the lines of "Our trip retails for $8000, but our travel agent got it down to $6000" cringe worthy. Better would be "The initial price when we first looked into it seemed really steep, but our TA worked some magic to get it down to a level that wasn't bad."

I'm not one to enjoy chatting at breakfast, but one day on my recent Danube trip a couple gave the difference between our current experience and the one they had a while back on Viking down the Rhine.

  7. Highly recommend Jewels of the North excursion - the geothermal fields (Sulphur Flats) was the highlight of the trip for us. On our way back to Akureyri from there, we stopped for a photo op at a point where the American and European tectonic plates meet. I thought getting a shot of a solitary cyclist making  his way between them was  a great photo. 20170804_150048.thumb.jpg.1531cf6c10e238b3553c4a81719ac5f4.jpg
