We are on the Emerald Princess right now. We purchased a 4 device wifi plan and are traveling with our adult son and his wife. We text each other  as well as others back home. No problems at all. I have a pixel 5a. My daughter in law has an iPhone. We can send and receive texts both with  Android users or iPhone users.

And you have cellular data OFF?

  2. Ocean Medallion App Please advise if this is correct.

I selected a basic cruise plan because we don't drink alcoholic drinks.  I do use room service at least once a day not including breakfast.

I was told from my Princess Rep. to use the Ocean Medallion App. and pay the one time 14.99 fee, then order room service on the app and they don't charge the $5.00 delivery fee.

If paying a $5.00 delivery fee do you still tip the delivery person?

    Thanks for any insight...

  3. You can pre-order 12 pack of small water bottles for around $7.00 per pack.  I normally order 2 packs per each week of the cruise.  Yes, it's a small bit more than Walmart but I don't have to bring it. Many times they just deliver one pack at a time and I call room service to get the next one when needed.  That may change I'll see on my next cruise.

  4. The Grand and Jewel class Princess ship have the best viewing for AK cruising.  They have a covered promenade deck 360 degrees around the ship.  The front of the promenade is called the clam shell and perfect when the rain starts.  You can walk on top of the bridge for spectacular views.  In the evening after 7PM or earlier if you are Platinum or above  sit and watch the sunset from the Skywalker lounge on the top back of the ship.  We once saw a huge humpback whale breach close to the ship from skywalkers.

You can't do any of that on the newer ships.  My2cents...

@marne-c,  I have to ask whether there is some confusion with nomenclature, here.

MedallionNet is the shipboard wi-fii network.  It is hardware agnostic--i.e., a SmartPhone or a tablet or a PC can log onto it.  The only software that is required is a browser--e.g., Chrome, Edge, Safari.  Windows based laptops come with Edge pre-loaded.  Many users load alternative browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.  Apple products come with Safari.

The MedallionClass app is software that can be loaded onto a SmartPhone or tablet and provides the shipboard functionality about which Princess has been bragging for the last several months--e.g., ordering cocktails from the pool area, making dinner reservations, checking ship's activities, reviewing the evening's dining room menu.

There is no software equivalent to the MedallionClass app for a PC.  So, those onboard functions cannot be accomplished on a laptop PC.  However, a laptop PC will work just fine for general web surfing subject to the normal performance constraints that can occur when using satellite communication technology.  Similarly, if a passenger wants to, for example, log on to his/her employer's server to keep up with e-mails, a laptop PC will work equally fine,

I understand that but 23 months ago they had a web page thaat you could use with a PC that was excellent that is now gone.  Not having a tablet I'm left with a 4" screen to navigate layers of confusing menus.  They said I could access services on my room TV but that was a fib as it just tells me to use a smart phone to get the info I need.  Sorry Princess but you get a BIG FAIL.

2nd issue laptop says connect to Medallionet internet without issue; however, our Apple phones need to be reset every morning with a logoff.com command then a medallionetclass.com to log back on to access the internet.  Several other people I've talked to have mentioned this issue.  I just love hearing the wife complain that she can't connect to the internet.

@framer  Yikes!!!  Really -- laptops not supported???  They can't be serious!!!

Also, a question for when you walk around:  Where is the quarantine area?  It would be one side of a cabin deck, either very aft or very forward.  The fire doors would be closed in the passageway to prevent casual access. Thanks!

Not see that anywhere.  I only wear a mask entering dining rooms, stores, elevators, embarkation, disembarkation  and service desks.  Just walking around common area, hallways and outside areas it is what you want and I have not been ask to put on my mask.

  7. Ship looks great, crew has been 1st rate. Now the bad of three excursions two were canceled and other to replace them were soldout, third one was changed from morning to afternoon and the only notice we got was the time shown on the ticket, we had other plans for that afternoon that had to be canceled.  Sanctuary Cabana was good but a bit off.  It was more 4 star service than the 5 star we've had in the past.  No welcome drinks, no stocked mini bar, just mixers we used there w/375ml bottle.  In the past it would be stocked with 10 assorted waters & soft drinks.  The fruit basket looked old and they never offered to cut it up.  Staff was nice but under trained in this area IMHO.

Medallionet SUCKS.  I can no longer use my laptop to order services and check on my account,  I was told that laptops are no longer supported just tablets and phones.  Layers of confusing menus very frustrating few like it.  I gone back to picking up the phone to get what I want.  Get a paper Patter it will save you.

We still love Princess and understand they have current issue to work through.

    Currently onboard,

  8. FF equivalent 28mm prime is nice from the air.  1/1000 or better, where dark shirt/jacket.

A sml prime lets you move easier.  35mm is 2nd choice.  Wider lens makes mountain look too small not natural.

Only if you want to take a picture of an object IE. boat, house, car do you need a teli.

Many Cessna aircraft, high wing have windows that can be opened all the way.

  9. Aperture mode is to control #1 depth of field and #2 the amount of diffraction I will except. If
I need to control the  shutter speed I step up/down the ISO setting.  Every lens seems to have a sweet spot for sharpness at a particular aperture.

  10. It been a long time since my last post.  Thanks Dave for you post on this subject.  I agree that too many buttons can confuse me.  I need just two settings "A",95% and "M", 5%.  With "A" the I use the "-/+" to correct for problems I see when checking files on the fly.  "ISO" when needed is also used.  "M" is use when I want consistency between images, planning to stitch or focus stack.  I try to keep the menu area at my default to keep things simple.  I hate it when I change something in the menu then forget it until it messes me up next time I use that camera, 'old age on my part'...  Now lets talk customizing the buttons.  Many button can be programed to be different that what it was, sadistic?

  11. Planks was OK but not great, I've eaten there several times.  If I could just order the meats I want would be better.  It's a nice break when you don't like what is in the MDR that night.

Most ships have a BBQ night at the grill out by the pool, their pulled pork sandwich on some cruises is fabulous.  That's free...

Some have mentioned that the aft pool on Sky is shallower than Regal.  How shallow?  Is it simply a wading pool or can you swim in it?

We have not yet been on Sky but have a November booking for her.

    Don

Wading, and the reteat pool is not IMHO any better...

I did like the Sky as well as the Regal.

I've stayed in M107 m108 on both thr Royal and Regal.  They are ok but little privacy on the huge balcony.  I prefer L107 or L108 it still a large balcony but totally private and  covered on the side.  They are all IMHO the best location on the ship unless you want a motionless cruise.

  14. Hope the gave you somrthing back as M108 was Club Class and M106 is is lower rated and not CC.

We also had a 2020 Med cruise cancelled I did not rebooked it, but went with a different Itinerary because I didn't feel the Med would open up in 2021.  Well that cruise was now cancelled .

I'm now hoping to get on a cruise this December, on the Regal, just booked M107.  It an eight day Caribbean cruise.

  15. Check out the balconies in Lido 107 or 108 and Marina 107 or 108.  I prefer the private Lido balconies.  ST5.jpg.d338e5d806959b1dd00c54e6a695bd4c.jpg
