  1. The Head Chef has a lot to do with food taste. Each NCL ship has a different Head Chef and although the dishes might be the same, each one is prepared differently depending up the chef. Had a chef from India once and it seemed that curry was added to every dish. Just saying. Had a chef from Bavaria Black Forest and every dish and desert was fabulous.
  2. There is a lot to be said for the small ships like the Sky. For cruisers in your age bracket, the Sky will be perfect. More interaction with fellow passengers and crew, nice quiet relaxing places.
  3. But I read somewhere that the 'crew room' was just below Deck 9 and where the crew smoked and spent their breaks at all hours of the day and night.
  4. You will totally love Alaska. Truly an amazing place. Beautiful scenery, eagles flying overhead. Don't let the temps get you down. Even when the temps look cold, the sun seems to always be shining so jackets often came off.
  5. I'm also on the Dec Joy Haven. Have never been to Harvest Caye so interested in what's there and if there is a Haven area. I did read in another post that the food and drink package do not apply on the island.
  6. Did I mention those pastries were low cal (LOL) PS: They have the nerve to put a scale in the bathroom. I dread even looking at the scale when I get home.
  7. My favorite for Haven breakfast is those chocolate pastries. To die for. I usually wind up wrapping one up to save for later.
  8. My last cruise was in Feb 2020 for 2 weeks on the Dawn. I hope to be sailing Dec 4th on the Joy about 3 months away. My toes are tingling with anticipation.
  9. Part of the name change I believe is because of the insertion of the word "suite". Some thought they were actually staying in a suite but in reality it is a larger balcony. Changing the name and adding some perks made it more attractive. Like you, we choose mini-suites for a long time for the extra room but again, like you, made the mistake of selecting a haven once ... need I say more. I will add that on the older ships without a 'true haven', I have booked a 'suite' cabin - discounted price with most of the Haven perks.
  10. Agreed. Free speech is not always pleasant to our ears but its better than suppressing speech. How can we learn if we shut down thoughts we don't agree with.
  11. This will actually be my first time on the Joy & so looking forward to Dec. I got hooked on Haven about 6 yrs ago when a friend asked us to join them 2 weeks before sailing. Got a last minute Aft Haven and fell in love. Your children will be spoiled forever after cruising with you. Hope you have great weather and a wonderful cruise.
  12. If you can afford to throw thousands of dollars a hand at blackjack, you should have surely been able to afford a Haven room the legal way.
  13. If you normally cruise in a balcony, the "suite" cabins are a very nice upgrade without the heavy Haven price. If a ship doesn't have a 'true Haven" I opt for a suite cabin.
  14. Sorry but you should be ashamed of what you did. I would not brag about cheating, lying and stealing which is what you did. Shame Shame Shame.
  15. The "Suite" category is a great choice - nice perks with a big saving over Haven prices. Private breakfast & lunch avoids crowds in buffet or dining rooms. Butler service for breakfast and snacks. Concierge for all your reservations and excursions. I like the Suites very much. The only missing part is the lack of private pool so for a few hundred (instead of thousand for Haven) I get a spa pass which has a private pool, hot tub, private loungers. This combo gets me just about everything from Haven but the added cost. I'm happy that I get everything I want and save thousand+ dollars.
  16. We usually book an early dinner, 5:30-6, which is enough time to make a 7pm show. Except for specialty restaurants, you won't have a problem just walking into the MDR at 8pm after the show if you couldn't make the early reserved seating.
  17. You can revise you bid up or down until your bid is selected. Remember the bid prices are per person so figure double bid price. Bids are not always the cheapest. Also remember NCL does not have to accept any bids. If bids are too low, they will hold out to just before sailing - 2-3 days out. Bidding can also be a way to work your way up to a higher cabin class.
  18. The Aft balconies - whether Haven or non-Haven, are priced higher because they are the best spots on the ship. Also why the new Prima ship has added tons of aft cabins. The aft cabins sell out fast. Views from the rear are the best - sunrise with a cup of Joe, sunset with a glass of wine or just watching the stars at night. It's just so peaceful you won't want to leave. This part of the ship is very quiet but it is also removed from activity so you will be doing some walking. Never had a problem with noise nor soot, nor the occasional rumble from the engines. Go for it, you won't be sorry.
  19. Do you still need to use your room key card to pay for drinks or purchases on board?
  20. How did NCL handle shore excursion tickets? Since Dailies have gone paperless are shore excursions paperless too?
  21. Thank you so very much for this wonderful informative post. Terrific job - pixs . Glad to see NCL upgraded their menus. Looks like they upgraded the wine list too. Appreciate pre-boarding info and changes from covid. Will be on the Haven Encore end of next yr and can't wait.
  22. Sailing on the Joy Dec 4. Confused about dining reservations. Reservations for theater and specialty dining I have always done on the first day with the Haven concierge. However, on my last Haven sailing I emailed, who I thought was the Haven concierge, with my reservations but they were never put into the restaurant, so when I went to dinner, the specialty restaurant had no reservation for me. The concierge had a very hard time 3 days into our cruise trying to get me a table for the rest of my specialty dining dates. It was a nightmare I don't want to repeat. Can I still make reservations in person with the concierge once on board? How do I contact the concierge on the Joy? After the last fiasco I'm not inclined to do this online.
  23. I enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and I found there were only about 4 or 5 bottles of cheap wine available in the 'basic drink pkg' category and most tasted terrible. In this instance, I did not mind paying $3-5 more for a better tasting wine.
  24. NCL's facial recognition works either with or without mask according to video.
  25. I prefer the forward/aft Haven cabins which seem to be more private and less noisy. Not counting Prima, aft Haven's are the best which is probably why all Havens on the Prima were moved to the rear of the ship where the best views are.
